Our son has ADD. My spouse insists on letting him have a CD WalkMan (portable CD player). He is given permission to listen to the WalkMan even while he is doing homework. She thinks that by telling him that he should only listen to classical music rather than rap or hip-hop, he will follow her wishes. I think giving our son a WalkMan is a bad idea. I think it would interrupt his concentration and just give him more temptation. He should learn to do homework without music. I recall reading someth ...

What do you do when you have a situation where a non-working student (rarely hands in any work) tells his parents that you are targeting him for zeroes and the parents continue to believe him -- even after you present them with full facts, details, timelines and comparisons? I have a really bright really lazy student who is earning a C with me (has two Fs in other classes). The parents are not worried about the Fs (which are also the result of non-work). They are continuing with the notion that ...

Another poster mentioned that she has a lot of accidents due to her ADHD. I've known one other person with ADHD and he also has an unfortunate driving history. I have the inattentive form of ADHD and I have never had an accident. I consider my ability to multi-process information an advantage in driving. Any thoughts or comments?

I'm newly diagnosed with Diabetes, I'm told its very mild, doesn't require any meds, but have to lose weight. I want to eat small but frequent meals throughout the day but because of my ADD, it breaks whatever momentum I have to get things done throughout the day, and then become overwhelmed, and not able to do it. Have you found a way to handle this?

Teens with ADHD Our family welcomes you to our website which features important information on teenagers who are struggling with ADD or ADHD. Attention deficit disorder runs in both our families, so we have had a lot of first-hand experience coping with its challenges. Currently all three of our children and two of our grandchildren have been diagnosed with either ADD or ADHD. So my husband and I are personally aware children, especially teenagers with ADD or ADHD present unique challenges for parents, teachers and counselors.
Parenting our sons was probably the most humbling, yet rewarding, experience of our lives. Now that our sons and daughter are grown and coping successfully with ADD and ADHD, we have developed this website to share information with other families and professionals. Hopefully, you will learn from both our mistakes and our successes. My family and I bring you a message of hope plus send best wishes during these difficult teen years!

Gene Predicts Better Outcome As Cortex Normalizes In Teens With ADHD However, the areas, on the right side of the brain's outer mantle, or cortex, normalized in thickness during the teen years in these children, coinciding with clinical improvement. Although this particular gene version increased risk for ADHD, it also predicted better clinical outcomes and higher IQ than two other common versions of the same gene in youth with ADHD.
When the NIMH researchers first reported last year that normalization of right cortex thickening was associated with better clinical outcomes in ADHD, there were few hints of a genetic connection. Yet evidence from several previous studies led them to suspect involvement of an ADHD-implicated version of a gene that codes for a receptor protein that binds to the brain chemical messenger dopamine.

ADHD Study Show Genes Contribute to Disorder, Could Lead to New The NIMH study found that brain areas that control attention were the thinnest in children with ADHD who carried the 7-repeat variant. But in these children, those areas normalized in thickness during their teen years. This coincided with improvement of ADHD symptoms. Researchers did not see similar improvement in ADHD patients with other gene variants linked to the disorder.
The ADHD children who had the 7-repeat variant also had better outcomes than the children with other gene variants. ADHD participants in the study who lacked at least one copy of the 7-repeat variant had lower IQs. Of those who had follow-up evaluations six years after the study started, 50-percent without the variant still had pronounced ADHD symptoms. In the group with at least one copy of the 7-repeat variant, only 21-percent still had pronounced symptoms.
