Monday December 3 6:09 PM ET ADHD Drugs May Lower Odds of Cocaine Abuse By Amy Norton NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Growing evidence suggests that children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who use stimulants like Ritalin are not at risk for drug addiction later in life, as some experts have worried. The latest comes from a study in rats that suggests stimulant treatment in childhood may blunt the pleasurable effects of cocaine in adulthood.
Researchers say the findings support studies of children with the disorder that showed those treated with stimulant drugs were less likely than untreated children to abuse illicit drugs later on.
Many children and teens with ADHD are treated with stimulant medication, the best-known being Ritalin. While it may seem paradoxical, these drugs appear to focus patients' attention and calm behavior. But there remain concerns about the long-term effects of ADHD medications, including whether they might make kids more prone to taking illegal drugs with stimulant effects.
In this latest study on ``pre-adolescent'' rats, Harvard scientists found that animals given methylphenidate (Ritalin) appeared to have an aversion to cocaine in adulthood, compared with untreated rats. The findings were published Monday in the advance online edition of Nature Neuroscience for January.
Dr. Susan L. Andersen and her colleagues at Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital in Belmont, M***achusetts, gave one group of pre-teen rats two daily injections of Ritalin for about 2 weeks, while the other group received an inactive substance. During adulthood, they looked at how much time the rats spent in locations that they had been conditioned to ***ociate with a cocaine ``reward.'' The Ritalin-treated rats spent less time in such areas, ''suggesting aversion to cocaine,'' the researchers report. In addition, the animals showed less of a physiological response when given cocaine, as well as higher brain activity in a gene called CREB. Such CREB activity has been linked to decreases in the reward response to cocaine.
In an interview, Andersen said that while these findings could suggest stimulant treatment for ADHD decreases the likelihood of later cocaine abuse, the phenomenon occurred in rats--and ``normal'' rats at that. A person affected by ADHD may have a different drug response altogether, she noted.
In addition, Andersen pointed out, it is possible that early stimulant exposure could blunt a person's response to other, normally pleasurable experiences. The basic pleasures like food and sex have been shown to affect the same ``reward centers'' in the brain that illegal drugs do.
Andersen said it is important for research to continue to look at the effects of stimulant treatment on a range of behaviors.
Dr. Nancy Pilotte of the National Institute on Drug Abuse in Bethesda, Maryland, agreed that there is a lack of data on any long-term brain changes Ritalin use might bring.
But she also said she is ``really excited'' about the current findings, pointing out that they mirror recent research linking Ritalin use to a lower risk of substance abuse among kids with ADHD.
Andersen's team also found that a potentially important factor in cocaine sensitivity may be the point at which Ritalin and other stimulants are started.
In a separate experiment, rats treated with Ritalin as adults were less likely to congregate in cocaine-***ociated areas. However, unlike the animals treated at a younger age, they showed a normal response to the stimulating effects of cocaine.
These animals also showed increased CREB activity, but it was accompanied by elevated levels of a protein called GluR2. According to Andersen, this suggests the balance between the two might be important in sensitivity to cocaine.
However, the significance of these findings is far from clear, she said.

It does, however, support the suggestion I put forward much earlier in the "Ritalin causes changes in brain" thread, that *of* *course* Ritalin will cause changes in the brain; we have reasons to suppose that these changes are beneficial; and although they affect the same parts of the brain as are involved in cocaine addiction, we have reasons to suppose that the effects are the opposite.

With my SAD, I'm at the point where I don't want to take the Ritalin at all because the crashes are just not worth it...  So I'm trying to just take it at the start of my shift so when I crash I'm otherwise occupied at work and don't have time to feel like shit and wallow in self pity and scream and cry.  I never used to crash this bad on it, I'd usually just get a bit irritable, well, a lot irritable.  That was when there was light out...
