Last minute question Anyone got any ideas for a fairly easy lateral thinking or similar type of problem solving exercise that patrols could do in competition with each other - looking for 5 minutes or so.
Thanks Bruce

Search for "Lateral Thinking Quiz" in Programmes Online - I did one set of these with my Explorers last week - it took them 1/2 hour to answer as many as they could (in one of the four sets of questions).

Thanks - tried that already but I have mislaid my user id - must have thought it was so obvious I did not need to write it down!
Please could you copy an example here Ta Bruce

There are four sets of questions, the first of set one is A1. 2 men are playing chess. They play 7 games, each win the same number of games, but there are no draws or stalemates. How?
< spolier space for those who want to think about it ... > < ... keep going ... > < ... almost there ... > A1. They are not playing each other.
I could email you the lot (as pdfs) - email me your address (my email address in this post is valid).

This may be too late but...
Give each patrol a sheet of newspaper and put it on the floor.
Tell them that they must get all of the patrol off the floor (don't say that they must use the paper, simply that it should help them).
If it goes according to plan they will stand easily on the paper.
Fold the paper in half (get them off it first) and repeat the question.
They should do it but it will be more difficult.
Keep repeating the folding until someone says 'hang on, he didn't say that we had to use the paper' and then they go and stand on chairs, tables etc.
Took my lot about four folds to work it out. the best bit is that someone _will_ work it out but get shouted down.
Alternatively, put one hula-hoop (not the edible type) in the middle of the hall and one in front of each patrol. Put some beanbags into the middle hoop - there need to be a few more than the number in the biggest patrol. The objective is to get all the beanbags into your patrol's hoop. There are some ground rules such as: You cannot throw a beanbag You can only steal beanbags from other circles once the middle is empty You can only carry one beanbag at a time You may not defend your hoop A beanbag must be within a hoop before it can be stolen You can add others as you see fit.
Start them off and there will be a mad melee for a few minutes, with no-one winning.
Stop them and re-start telling them to think about it.
The point of the exercise is that no individual team can win. The only way to get all the bean bags in the hoop is to move all the hoops over the middle hoop.
I've not explained it well but it was good fun.
Regards, Stephen

I am sorted now but thanks Very clever! Not sure mine will get that!
This is an excellent idea deminstrating cooperation and yet brilliant fun too.  I can't see them getting it either but I will give it a go.
Not at all thanks very much indeed for 2 very good ideas Bruce
