A friend just got an email from his corporate boss sating that about 4000 people were going to be laid off at facilities around the US --almost 20% of the staff. Most layoffs would be by random choice, he said, so no one laid off should take it as a criticism!!!!! They need to "adjust" expenses to improve a third quarter projection.
And laid-off staff would be asked to train "permanent temps" in order not to harm production.
Some here will say how wonderful this is, but others will see that it is pretty sickening.

Might be quite amusing in the long run. Imagine 4,000 pissed of employee's training "permanent temps" to do their jobs. I know that if I were to train someone to take my place at work the net cost would explosive and if it exponential multiplied by 4,000..... Remember often times in American companies the CEO's and Board of Directors still get bonuses even if the company implodes or goes into the tank.
Think Tyco, MCI, Enron (oh sorry, I forgot that corporate corruption has been outlawed). :-) Stephen.
PS my friend got canned from P&G a few years ago in their cost cutting attempt. She was upset till she saw how badly her division tanked after she and a few others were sacked.

The ultimate insult. So they are not reducing staff, merely reducing the cost of staff.
I'm certainly glad that I learned very early in my career that while society preaches worker loyalty to employers, employers don't reciprocate.

I know of no one who thinks layoffs are wonderful.

As per usual, John takes one miserable case and attempts to generalize from it.
If you are going to discuss layoffs, then list how many new jobs are being created at the same time. List what happens to those who are laid off. For instance many Enron employees have formed their own companies or moved on to better jobs with other companies. Microsoft is about to hire 5000 new employees as are many other companies.

What a crock of shit. Most Former Enron employees lost their life savings and their jobs at the same time and very few have found jobs that pay anywhere near as much. Get your head out of your *** and see what's happening in this country. Good paying jobs are being replaced with temps, overseas, and other low paid people to make up for the incompetence and outright theft by management.

The way to avoid getting "laid off" is not to work for someone. If you work for someone, that is the chance you take. I also wonder why those who like to post messages like this never mention RIF's?

There can be no doubt that allowing private companies and corporations, which must be profitable to stay in business, is a policy error of the greatest magnitude. What should be immediately done is the nationalization of all private companies and corporations, removing the necessity for economic viability from the equation.
Once the government is running everything, and paying all the employees regardless of profitability, the economic situation which leads to fluctuations in employment levels as the economy ebbs and flows will disappear. It will merely require the raising of tax rates across the board to ensure that sufficient funds are available to pay the workers.
Once that problem is solved, the wealth disparity can be resolved.

It is a wonderful and liberating experience for most people and their families. It forces liberated workers to confront their innermost fears and better plan for their own future without excessively depending on others. The temporary free time is positive for family values, for furthering spousal relationships, and for personal introspection. A layoff trims unnecessary deadwood, prevents stagnation and corruption, and increases efficiency, thereby enabling corporate leaders to concentrate on their own well-being and personal development without undue daily concerns. Society at large ultimately benefits from this exciting phenomenon.... Repeated applications are encouraged.
NOT.

I found some more accurate information about job creation and loss.
After creating 113,000 private sector jobs over two years, the Bay Area has now lost 275,000 jobs, mostly in Santa Clara County (Silicon Valley) and San Francisco. The East Bay has been least affected by job loss.
New York City lost 192,000 jobs over 2 years which resulted in 5.3% decline.
Chicago, Dallas-FortWorth and Boston all lost over 100,000. The five worst job markets in the country, based on % of jobs lost in the private sector were the Bay Area, Boston, Indianapolis, Seattle and Portland with high-tech accounting for the loss except in Indianapolis.
The Employment Development Department in CA projects that the tech industry will reverse course in the Bay Area and generate substantial job growth over the next three years.

The Hawaiian marriage statutes specified the circumstances under which two PERSONS might marry with NO specification as to gender ***ortment. The State office (Lewin) refused to issue the liscense to three same-gender couples, refused to obey THE LAW AS WRITTEN.
This is the issue that went to court and the issue on which the state lost its case, big time. The legislature made an end run around the supreme court and called a vote on a proposed amendment to the constitution -- THEY wish to change the law -- NOT the petitioners.

Most small businesses go under shortly after startup.
It's very unstable-- and really worse than losing your job, if you lose your business.
It wouldn't be necessary for layoffs to happen if govt officials took the politics out of economic policies.
Full employment can be sustained a long time. For example, unemployment in Japan was almost non-existant until it's bad banking practices caught up with it.
goldenstatepo ...@aol.com (GoldenStatePoppy)

Seeing too many rants on how tax cuts to the rich will increase our middle cl*** incomes. Why don't officials just be honest and say they want to help their friends?
"Robert Thomas" rob...@earthlink.net
I'm sure you think that the best way to create jobs is to screw over that segment of our society that provides jobs.
snort bob
"Jerry Okamura" okamuraj...@hawaii.rr.com
Because among economist, there is a difference of opinion on how tax cuts effect the economy. Those who tend to support left leaning ideas, argue that it does not, and those who tend to support right leaning ideas, argue that is does. So, who is right.
Troy bulr...@nicasa.net
The liberal propaganda has warped your judgment if that is your belief..

I think we just have a disagreement over what is their "fair share". They just want to contribute a tinny winny portion of their earnings to society. Even Forbes flat tax approach is too much for them. They'd probably change it into a zero tax approach with deductions and credits if Forbes had ever got elected. It's shameful that people who benefit from our legal protections and free economy don't want to contribute at all.
"Alvin E. Toda" a...@lava.net
Let Greenspan and the Fed worry about tuning the economy. They have the tools and can make better predictions with their models-- and don't have a political ax to grind. Perhaps tax proposals should also originate with them instead of Congress. In a push pull sense, they could make a more effective use of a tax credit for economic development that any Congressman could.
Congress can p*** laws to keep companies honest in their reporting and business practices. No one wants to leave their savings invested with a bunch of crooks.
"Alvin E. Toda" a...@lava.net
Actions speak louder than words. We already have a lot of loopholes in the law.
