US threatening Canada over its POT laws - too liberal !
VANCOUVER - A White House drug policy official says there will be retaliation from the U.S. if Canada relaxes its laws against marijuana possession.
"We would have to respond. We would be forced to respond," said Murray.
The US drug tzar is an addict - it is estimated he has squandered $8M in slot machines in the last decade. A sad looser. But he knows best for US and it seems he knows best for Canada too - enough for the Bush Administration to not rule out invasion.

As we all know, Canada is now becoming one of the biggest threats, when it comes to drugs entering the US now. The United States should begin to look at its borders in a more serious manner. legalizing pot in Canada is a serious issue for the US. I just think it is funny how you equate a man who SUPPOSEDLY (in otherwords a rumor) gambles as being not worthy to make a stance on mary jane being manufactured legally in a border country.

Canada's pot law changes are harmless.
People caught with a joint will be charged money and not given a criminal record.
This is MORE strict, not less. Currently they are given a warning ONLY.
Nobody goes to jail for having one joint.  Nobody goes to court and nobody gets a criminal record.
The new laws would allow the government to get a bit of money from the user.
Nothing else.
The US would be smart to follow suit. The police need the money.

They are not talking about legalizing pot. You just don't get a criminal record. Same as speeding is not legal but you only get a fine or lose your license.
serious issue for the US.

This is a very good idea and should have been done AGES ago.  Better yet..
it should be all out legal so that the goverment could tax it like they do to alcohol and tabacco (which are worst in the long run than pot)!
I don't see how this is a problem for the U.S.   There is still a fine for doing it... it's just much less of a strain on our police and judicial systems to go chase people who smoke a harmless herb.

Once again hypocrisy at its finest. The pot that flows south pales in comparison to the cocaine (and other hard core drugs) and illegal hand guns that come to Canada from the (Saint like) USA (often as a part of the payment for the pot!) Trafficking of marijuana is and will still be a federal offence and treated as such!
When will Americans start admitting their mistakes and stop blaming Canada?
You let the terrorists in *legally* through your own airports, none of which came from Canada! Your country (probably) has just as many if not more suspected terrorist cells still nestled in her bosom. Your country is the source of much of the hard core drugs and illegal guns now in the hands of criminals in Canada.
I am not anti-American (actually only one generation from being American on my fathers side with most of my relatives south of the border) just one Canadian getting sick of the hypocrisy.

No, the biggest threat is from the CIA, Afghanistan, and Columbia.
The United States needs to get it's hypocritical head examined. Almost all of the cocaine entering Canada comes in through the US. What are you doing to stop it?
Looks like you're spouting off without knowing the specifics. Pot is not going to be legalized in Canada. It is going to be decriminalized. That means that possesion of small quantities of pot will not be subject to prosecution and jail time, but rather tickets and fines. This is only fair, as at least 25% of the population in both Canada and the US has at one time or another smoked pot. That's 70 million US citizens. Do you think they should all be locked up in jail and end up with criminal records?
Legislation accompaning decriminalization will be even tougher on drug dealers and large grow ops. Decriminalization does not mean Canada is going soft on drug use, it means that it is reflecting a reality, and after all, we are a democratic country.

I think this is very very sad.
I don't believe Canada would be reflecting a reality at all.
The reality is that we do not prosecute people for growing or eating tomatoes or for sharing or even selling those tomatoes to friends. It is also inappropriate and obscene to fine or harr*** people for using, sharing, selling or growing this teacher plant with its always suprising healing qualities.
I suggest that Canada has become intimidated by America over time. Not one European country would tolerate such fines. Stand up to this bully and good luck. I'm glad I don't live next door.

"mp" m...@123.com

Decriminalization is the first and perhaps most important step, and the police in Canada certainly don't har*** people for simple possession. I see pot being treated much the same as alcohol. If you drink in public, you're liable to get fined, rather than jailed. No one really cares what you do in the privacy of your own home.
You're right. The political and economic pressure on Canada to succumb to the US will is enormous and intrudes on Canadian sovereignty. With corporations increasing in their influence on government policy, it's become even more of a problem.

I would have to disagree with your thoughts that following suit on legalizing pot is a smart thing. Allowing pot on the streets to give police more money is like giving bullets to children so that their parents can get more guns.

"mp" m...@123.com

The proposed legislation is for decriminalization, NOT legalization.

Treating small amounts of pot like booze is a much better way.   My friend, who was nailed in '74 for possession of 28 grams (1 ounce) had to get a Pardon so he could continue his life without a bloody criminal record.  He was 16!
He's now doing very well, and that would have screwed him big time if he was at the Suffrage (18).
