Fixing USA K-12

(24 Messages)

Improving USA elementary / secondary education is easy; 1. All K-12 education FEDERALLY funded, including new STANDARD school buildings every 30 years, 600 kids max, 15 kids per teacher. This allows a flat organization, each school one principal and assistant, two guidance counselors, two secretaries, 30 to 50 teachers. 2. Education funding via 1% NATIONAL real estate tax on all residences and businesses, and 5% on all rents. Balance of funding out of general FEDERAL revenue. NO local extra fund ...

Teaching Strategies TEACHING STRATEGIES ENEWSLETTER 10Teaching Strategies: TEACHING STRATEGIES E-NEWSLETTER # 10 The Creative Curriculum® approach is based on a strong belief that children learn best when they are actively engaged in play and activities that are meaningful and relevant. "The Creative Curriculum® for Early Childhood" and our new companion book, "Connecting Content, Teaching, and Learning: A Supplement to The Creative Curriculum® for Early Childhood, 3rd Edition," describe and demonstrate how to plan a developmentally appropriate program focusing on ten well-organized interest areas.

The Creative Curriculum® is a comprehensive approach that presents specific goals and objectives for teachers to address in social/emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development. In order to meet these objectives, during the course of a day, children should have opportunities to work in small group, large group, and independent activities. Teachers should plan daily routines that balance the pace and flow of activities that are active/quiet, individual/group, indoor/outdoor, child-initiated/teacher-directed, etc. Since The Creative Curriculum is a flexible framework designed so teachers can make informed decisions ...

Tablespoons amp Teaspoonsltbr gt Teaching Teens the Art of MealTablespoons & Teaspoons:<br /> Teaching Teens the Art of Meal The multi-step process of planning and preparing a meal is a daunting prospect for many young adults. For individuals with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), even organizing a trip to the grocery store can be trying, as it requires putting together a grocery list, locating house and/or car keys, and finding one’s checkbook, debit card, or enough cash to pay for purchases. This article will explain how the characteristics of LD and AD/HD may present challenges for kids who are learning to plan and prepare meals. I will also offer strategies for teaching ...

Ask your child to be your cooking assistant. Give him increasing responsibility for unwrapping, slicing, and measuring as he grows old enough to tackle these aspects of the process. Read through recipes together and explain cooking terms (e.g., “chop” versus “slice”) as they are introduced in recipes. Teach your child how to use kitchen knives safely. Supervise as he practices slicing and chopping until he’s comfortable handling and using knives for various food preparation techniques. Show your child how to use the appliances needed for basic cooking. Introduce one appliance ...

Teaching PronunciationTeaching Pronunciation P ronunciation involves far more than individual sounds. Word stress, sentence stress, intonation, and word linking all influence the sound of spoken English, not to mention the way we often slur words and phrases together in casual speech. 'What are you going to do?' becomes 'Whaddaya gonna do?' English pronunciation involves too many complexities for learners to strive for a complete elimination of accent, but improving pronunciation will boost self esteem, facilitate communication, and possibly lead to a better job or a least more respect in the workplace. Effective communication is of greatest ...

A review of literature on mathematics instruction for elementaryA review of literature on mathematics instruction for elementary The majority of students with learning disabilities (LD) are taught in the general education classroom today because of the trend toward inclusive services in special education. However, there is limited literature on teaching math for such students compared to the literature on teaching reading and language arts. Some very basic modifications could increase the success for students with LD and also help others in the classroom that are at risk for having learning problems. In fact, students with LD benefit from many of the same teaching strategies that ...

Children that are labeled LD must meet several criteria. First of all, there must be a discrepancy between potential and performance. In other words these students are underachieving in mathematics, reading, writing, or some other academic area. This problem is presumed to be related to a central nervous system disorder, which suggests that LD is an intrinsic problem and therefore cannot be completely controlled by the children. In addition, students with LD exhibit processing problems such as memory and perception. Finally, the children do not have other primary disabilities ...

Continuous LearningContinuous Learning So, with summer vacation on the horizon, I realize that I won’t be able to take time off from learning. Not that I ever really did take time off but this summer will be a bit different because instead of taking in a summer course or going to a class, I will be plotting out how I can use new tools to enhance my teaching and leading and learning about the various tools that are available. The idea that teachers have two months off, which was always a fallacy, is now completely without any merit since teachers will need to invest time throughout the summer ...

Well my plan for the summer is to lay out some priorities for myself and then fill in the blanks with resources that will help me achieve those goals. Since SMART goals and PLCs are two areas of focus for the school division, I will focus my early reading on these two areas. I am going to use a wiki to track my reading and do my planning for the school year. One of my goals is to create a few videos to assist teachers in using some of the tools. Now I know that there are a few RSS videos available so that will be one less video to do! I’m considering a video on how to create a wiki, ...

Johannessen39s 8 Principles of Literacy InstructionJohannessen's 8 Principles of Literacy Instruction I think the following five principles of Johannessen apply to my unit plan: 1. Focus on complex, meaningful questions and problems so that students' reading and writing can be in service of genuine inquiry. 2. Embed basic skills instruction in the context of more global tasks, such as including reading comprehension and composing skills in introductory reading and writing activities or instruction. 4. Model powerful thinking strategies for students. 5. Encourage students to use multiple approaches to academic tasks. 7. Use teaching strategies that will help students internalize the questions that good ...

UPDATE Helping AfricanAmerican Boys SucceedUPDATE! Helping African-American Boys Succeed An Invitation from Education Week Teacher Magazine Research Center Source: www.edweek-chat.org Last Chat: Thursday, May 17, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time The academic problems of African-American boys are well documented. Their high school graduation rate is well below that of white boys. They generally perform worse in school than African-American girls.
