My son has become completely uninterested in school. I can't get him motivated about it. He's always been a good student and up until this year, he enjoyed his studies. Now he's telling me he's bored. He's even mentioned dropping out. I am looking for an alternative to his public school but I can't afford private school. I'm thinking of something more structured around his needs, maybe someplace where he can work at his own speed and receive more one on one attention. Does anyone have any ideas?

If anyone has suggestions for additions to the site, please contact me at Please note that inclusion in the list does not constitute a recommendation. Detroit cuts alternative schools to 4 Editor's note: This article misstated the name of the founder of the Tredco-Patch-More School Initiative alternative high school in Detroit. The founder is the Rev. Richard Wilson. Four controversial alternative schools received permission Thursday to continue to operate in Detroit despite findings last year about lax oversight, lack of staff training and officials' inability to prove how many students actually attended the schools that collected millions in taxpayer funds.
Local schools finish up construction Tina Jones, human resources and communications coordinator, said the district was finishing up with construction at the Megan Mallatt Activities Center at Pittsburg High School. The center, which will be dedicated Sept. 23, will include a second gymnasium to the school as well as a wrestling room, weight room and dance studio. Perhaps nobody has seen more construction over the past couple of years than St. Mary's-Colgan. Last year, Colgan finished its elementary school and dedicated the new fieldhouse, while this year, the result is a new high school. ...
Look to alternative schools for property tax solution A major problem causing high property taxes is that schools' ghosts -- empty chairs -- are a higher priority than breathing children. Stop funding methods that are concerned only with school corporations and the health of their bureaucracies with high union membership. Property taxes can come down and education levels go up through the intelligent use of school choice. Indiana schools currently cost close to $9,000 a student for what many consider to be a second-rate education. Alternative schools can cost far less.

Alternative Education vs. Alternative Discipline We've noted for a long time that real alternative education works a lot better than programs that call themselves "alternative education" but are really disciplinary placements. In most alternative discipline programs, students are "sentenced" to an alternative program. Back in the late 90s, before the Statewide Alternative Education program was initiated, we had some opportunities to compare the two types of treatments and found that students improved when in true alternative education programs; the reverse was true when the programs were disciplinary placements. More evidence ...
Green Dot calling. But two large questions among others remain: 1) is it really ok to have regular public education for most kids, but green dots in small settings for poor Black and Hispanic kids? 2) why should teachers, too weak in their current unions, accept being divided into smaller units with different contracts and less “strength in unity” to bargain from?
As for the union question: I still have lots of questions about the role of collective bargaining and Green Dot. But I don’t think your premise works. The structure of American school districts has always been local. There are thousands of locals across the US, thousands of contracts. The fact that within LA, for example, there might be smaller bargaining units, in itself , is not a necessarily a problem. It could be, but like most things, it depends. Look, some schools have active, high capacity union leadership. Other schools don’t. Same ...
