Just read this item We have been considering the possibility of home educating DD for some time. It seems that this school is following the spirit of HE. My only reservation is that by not following the standard curriculum and exam process, that the children's options will be limited. The education system (and potential employer) is geared towards grading and assessing in terms of exam results. I really do want to HE, but I can't help feeling that it will ultimately limit the choices available t ...

Lane County schools end contract with charter school COTTAGE GROVE (AP) - A school board in Lane County has ended its contract with a charter school where there are no classes or grades, students decide how to spend their days, and teachers take a hand only if asked. The decision threatens to cut off state aid to the Blue Mountain School, which has about 65 students in kindergarten through grade 12. The South Lane School Board is “feeling the heat” of higher expectations from state and federal governments, said Chairman Jim Goes, and it voted 4-3 in July to end its nine-year relationship with the school.
It initially operated as a private alternative education program under contract with the district. In 2004 it won approval as a charter school, allowing it to enroll students from any district. The district provides oversight and passes along 80 percent of the per-pupil state allotment for grades kindergarten through eight, and 95 percent for grades nine through 12. The self-directed learning philosophy follows a democratic model pioneered in the late 1960s by the Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, with students and staff members given equal votes on most decisions and the idea that ...
Two companies compete to run Clayton's alternative education program Clayton schools officials have been criticized in the past year for their spending. A civil grand jury released a report in May that found Clayton school board members weren't "good stewards" of taxpayer money when they paid John D. Stephens about $2 million more than the school district's appraisal for 155 acres to build three schools on land he owned in Riverdale. The school board also paid Stephens $7.8 million to grade the property without accepting any other bids for the contract.
CEP has received mediocre reviews from parents in northwest Atlanta since it opened a school in 2002 for students that were either expelled or suspended by Atlanta Public Schools. CEP officials say student incidents have dropped from 703 during the 2004-05 school year to 237 during the school year that just ended. But the school has failed to meet state-mandated student testing standards for each of the past five years, state records show.
Another alternative for education The Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School ended its third year with about 1,900 students from throughout the state, and would like to enroll more students in the Fay-West region. At an informational meeting Tuesday, Amy Sarno, student services and admissions coordinator, discussed the cyber school, which teaches students in kindergarten through 12th grade through interactive Internet lessons. It has offices in West Chester and Tarentum. The state authorized charter schools in 1997. Charter schools are self-managed public schools approved by local schools. ...

Budget would cut Harrisburg, Lebanon schools The school district's weren't paying for education but the services of a private agency called Cornell Abraxius. There are other alternative schools that haven't contracted out with private agencies and are sucessful. Reading School District has teamed with Children's Home of Reading. For Lebanon and Harrisburg the high cost went to an outside agency that has not proven that their method is successful. Their goal is to make money for their stockholders. There is a need for alternative schools. These kids have a lot of issues that can't be worked ...
Consider how some of these parents are living, sometimes working more than one job and at low wages that haven't been adjusted to the cost of living. What discpline can these at risk kids get when their parent(s) are struggling to pay the bills and the programs that can help them are cut due to lack of funding. You should also realize it can be your tax dollar now trying to help nurture them into productive, contributing citzens or your tax dollar later when they are straining the system while institutionalized or on the street.
The Last Straw in Public Education Public education is like a maze through which a child must traverse in order to arrive at a viable and productive career. Nonetheless, it is a maze, with some paths that lead to nowhere. We keep bumping into dead-end walls, trying to figure our way out. Which is smarter, a rat going through a maze or a black boy trying to graduate from high school? Right, the rat gets the cheese. The black boy gets life in prison, albeit on an installment plan. Education is supposed to produce intelligence. The rat traverses the maze because he “learns” from ...
Alternative Education Methods I read this from Fred Reed, promised myself I would blog on it and promptly forgot it until Vox Day reminded me with his column. Fred found out that Kaplan is preparing High School Students for college using comic books . He's upset because he believes that the whole thing is set up to let universities milk the public of money. He may be right, but it's beside the point. This is NOT just a gimmick to get bodies for universities - it's a need met by the free market as only the free market can. The government couldn't have legislated attempting ...
