Yes, and neither one of them was "following" the Atkins diet.
Just eating nothing but meat for months at a time is NOT the Atkins diet.
They obviously read the one page in the book about the two week induction diet, thought that was the whole diet and basically starved themselves to death.

Move more, eat less. It don't get no simpler than that.
People could lose 10# in one year by just walking one measly mile a day, making no other changes to their lifestyle.
I hear VERY good things about "10,000 Steps" for all kinds of health conditions--obesity, diabetes, arthritis, etc.
http://www.thewalkingsite.com/steps.html http://magazines.ivillage.com/goodhousekeeping/diet/fitness/articles/... Of course, you will need a pedometer that records steps (not all pedometers do). Radio Shack has a nifty little pedometer for around $25--counts steps, converts them into miles (as set by stride length), tracks calories burned, pulse meter and a few other neat features like a clock, a time logger and a stopwatch. Great item for anyone due to its multifunctional capabilities. Does not tolerate getting dropped well--ladies, take it off before pulling your pants down; nor is it water resistant.
If motivation is the problem, get a dog. A high maintenance dog, like the German Shepherd puppy I got dumped on me Halloween weekend. You *have* to walk them--or they'll do Bad Things(tm), like eat your house.
She gets walked/trotted/run a mile in the morning and a mile at night.
Don't forget the Poo Pouch....leaving poo piles in the neighbors' yards is just RUDE.

Yes, and that just shows that Nutrition Australia, who ever they are, didn't read the book either.
The Atkins diet is NOT a high protein diet, it's a low carb diet, not a no carb diet.
The book has very clear instructions on how to determine the level of carbs you can consume without gaining weight because of them and, most importantly (this is the part that evidently no one is reading), how to maintain a proper and healthy level of nutrition.
If you go out and just eat nothing but protein it WILL kill you.
The whole "Atkin's diet is killing people" thing just goes to show, once again, how stupid people are. Follow the instructions and it won't harm you.

This helpful medical advice is brought to you by the same people who've advocated low fat/high carbohydrate diets for 20+ years, resulting in the obesity epidemic.
It may not get any simpler than that, but it can get far more effective. Have you read either Atkins or Protein Power?
Here's an interesting article I ran across yesterday: http://www.dolfzine.com/page208.htm I'm guessing that most people, by the time they get to Atkins, need far more than a mere 10 pound per year weight loss.
miguel
dmoc ...@mfm.com (The Danimal)
Name one obese person who eats a low-fat diet.* Hint: people don't need to "advocate" something most people are already doing.
Advocates of "safer" sex have advocated the use of condoms for 20+ years. In your effortlessly logical mind has that resulted in the sexually-transmitted disease epidemic?
If we are still hearing the condom message after 20+ years it is quite obvious vast numbers of men reject the message.
Otherwise the advocates would move on to some other worthy cause.
Blaming the AIDS crisis on condoms would be about as stupid as blaming the obesity epidemic on the low-fat diets no fat person provably follows for very long.
In contrast, nobody has to tell men to drive cars, download porn from the Internet, or become sports fans. If you wanted to spot a trend, the first thing to check for would be the *ABSENCE* of any sort of "advocacy" (i.e., people with no profit motive urging the behavior). I've never heard of any "advocacy" groups urging men to drive more, download more porn, or watch more sports.

Correlation != Causation.
There are a number of factors, of course, and magical thinking all around. That "Big Gulp" soda doesn't have an ounce of fat, of course, but it is chock full of empty calories. Don't supersize it and be aware that "Low Fat" and "Low Calorie" aren't necessarily the same thing (ditto for "low carb" and "low cal", actually).
A co-worker lost about 30 lb on Atkins. If it took Atkins to convince him that the five-six beers he regularly knocked back on game days was making him fat I say more power to it. (I will note that he read the whole thing and followed carefully.) He "eats healthy" now and has maintained his weight loss.
I personally love my carbs enough to not want to cut them out entirely, but then I'm not overweight (etc.). "Low(er) fat" and "low(er) carbs" both have a lot to recommend them (esp. when saturated fats and highly processed simple carbs are what gets cut out). Charlotte (who has been issued a License to Eat Potatoes by a Qualified Health Professional)
miguel mig...@newsguy.com
The causal nexus is pretty well spelled out in Protein Power. IIRC: 1. Insulin is anabolic. While aiding in the transport of glucose into muscle tissue it is also aiding in the transport of lipids into fat cells.
2. Many people tend to become insulin resistant. This causes the pancreas to excrete more and more insulin to reduce blood sugar. More insulin --> more pounds packed on.
How many people do you know with Type II diabetes who aren't overweight?
You may be one of the lucky folks who will not become insulin resistant. Perhaps your carb intake isn't over the top.
I think I recall reading someplace that the real villain in the deal is high fructose corn syrup.

It should also be pointed out that the Atkins diet has a specific target audience (people with insulin resistance as stated above).
The book puts people in three categories: One that will be helped greatly by the diet, one that it will help somewhat and one that it will actually make fatter.
There are clear guidlines for determining what category you fit into.

But since you don't like them, let's try these: The AMA: "The American Medical ***ociation dismissed the Atkins' diet as nutritional folly...Labeling it "potentially dangerous," the AMA said the diet's scientific underpinning was "naive" and "biochemically incorrect." I'm not debating that a lot of people tend towards IR and that getting away from carbs (esp. simple carbs) can help them break the cycle. My attorney, a large man, developed Type II diabetes on his beloved Italian food. Now that he has switched to a high-protein diet he doesn't need to take meds any more, although as he says, he hasn't lost all that much weight because he isn't watching his portion size much.
A 12 oz steak is a lot of calories, although it's much better on the glycemic index than pasta.
But I tend to think it's more the type and quantity that were consumed.
The doctors were probably thinking whole grains and veggies and people were consuming high-fructose corn syrup and other sugars, in Big Gulp quantities. I personally think it's the Big Gulp that's more at fault than the old diet recs and I also suspect the overweight weren't eating a particularly low-fat diet on top of that. People got silly with an idea, much like the two idiots who only ate meat and died as a result got silly with the idea behind Atkins. And I don't agree with the Aussie docs on "atkins is always evil".
Is that clearer :-)?
I've sort of thought I might tend to hypoglycemic (the other direction).
Used to be but I always thought the "high carb low fat" was a bit extreme as well. (My diet at the time should be described as "high carb high fat" ... and I did gain some on it.) I was aware that "low fat" was not necessarily low calorie since flavor had been punched up with sugar (bleah). Six of one, half a dozen of the other. I cook and shop carefully to try to avoid items with weird ingredients and stealth calories*. I think it also helps that I don't have much of a sweet tooth and actually happen to like eating most foods, including the "better for me" kind. I have a deep distrust of diet "fads" since I have seen them come and go, but I do try to pay attention to the content behind the inevitable flurry of marketing BS. E.g., "eat more fiber" is good; "Contains Oat Bran!" may be just hype on a high-calorie product and I should fix myself some proper oatmeal for brekkie instead. I am not interested in going on Atkins but reducing the sugar/white flour I eat is a Good Idea. * That being said, I must admit that I don't *want* to know what the caloric content of some of the stuff I make for myself is. I just try to balance things out, th*** all.
FWIW most of the overweight people in my family had heart/cholesterol trouble, not blood sugar issues.

You're blaming the obesity epidemic in the US on Nutrition Australia?
I skimmed Atkin's, I've read far more from the opposing medical community.
*snarf* He's not a fan of Atkin's, either.
I think he, too, is a sheister. "Get ripped in 90 days. no bull. no tricks. no gimmicks".
Excuse me? That is based on only one mile a day, with absolutely no other changes. Clearly, adding a second mile (or more, I think the 10,000 steps is around 4 miles) and making slight changes to the diet would accomplish more.
Actually, what I *really* think is that if people just MOVED more, they wouldn't need to concern themselves with their diet at all.
I read somewhere that what people mistake as hunger pangs are actually the body signaling that it's low on water and this thirst gets translated as hunger because of the high water content in food.
Dunno how true that is.
