Brockton man gives at- risk teens a summer alternative to violence The youths, in addition to daily activities, go on field trips to Brockton Rox games, Gilbert said. “Check your attitude at the door,” one program counselor told youths during a group session on Wednesday. The goal was to target youth living on the city's South side, where there is “a real big void” for youth programs, Gilbert said. “We walked a five-block radius around the church, just handed out fliers to kids on the street,” Gilbert said.
Disrespect is not tolerated from youths in the program, Gilbert said. If youths are caught swearing or fighting, they are “kicked out, gone,” he said. “They're coming on their own, and they're all walking” to the program, he said of neighborhood youths. Gilbert has known hard times. In 1996, he went into a coma for seven days and was hospitalized for 33 days following a car accident in Virginia, he said. Are school graduation rates simply an illusion? It is interesting to me that no data is kept on those who leave high school before graduation. Would that be related to their not appearing as bad statistics, therefore not anyone's concern? Perhaps, if one was willing to be realistic rather than buy into the pipe dream of proficiency for all, not everyone can pass the FCAT. There are several things that trouble me about this article. I am glad to hear that Dr. Lannon feels these numbers are "unacceptable." I have heard some of his ideas to improve SLC schools, and I hope he follows through. But then, you have Martin Co schools, with lots of A ratings, and their dropouts rates are lousy too. It seems that many of the kids dropping out would benefit from a school that provides vocational training. Do schools districts have those any more?
