To all of you who have emailed me and posted about my situation with my son Matthew, thanks so much for your support and caring. It's a hard decision and now that it's made, I just have to survive the bureaucratic nonsense...
... the stress of the mess didn't do me any favors. My blood pressure went up, and Tuesday night I started having visual disturbances (looking at one's daughter and realizing that one can see her hair and shirt but not her face clearly is SCARY), and ended up spending two nights in Labor and Delivery being monitored for pre-eclampsia.
Strict bedrest and hydration brought the protein levels down, my vision cleared up and I got to come home yesterday afternoon. I'm on a every other day doctor visit schedule for monitoring until this kid is born and I'm not allowed to do housework or other strenuous things until after the birth... my house is even more of a disaster but I'm trying really hard not to look at it and get upset...
I do have permission to start my college cl***es on Monday, ***uming I'm doing allright at my doctor appointment tomorrow or not in labor, so I am looking forward to that. I just hope the financial aid check is in the revenue office so I can buy my books! :) Anyway, if I suddenly disappear again, hopefully it's because I'm in labor! And hopefully, I'll get a chance to send a post here to let you all know!
Cheers!

first congratz on having the baby. I have a cousin who went through the same thing and is can be very scary. Most important thing is to not get upset. So what if the house is a little messy for awhile? worst case scenario your husband finds a cookie on the floor and implement the five second rule.
Seriously thouhg, maybe you two can get a mad to come in once or twice a week to pick up, the free ones are called in-laws.

Earlier, the Goalie told Bernadette: Redneck: Nemo: "What he said, 'Neck," quoth da Goalie. "I know a *bit* about the subject, since my family has fought (and continues to fight) this battle.
The more that mental illness is studied, the more *physical conditions* are found to be the root cause... most often, chemical imbalances in the brain.
It's why counseling alone can't cure clinical depression -- the *brain* isn't working properly." "Think about it this way, if it helps. If your legs or arms don't work, you're 'disabled.' If you can't see or hear, you're 'disabled.' USA Public schools are required to teach *everybody and anybody* -- regardless of handicap. The school can't do that if, say, there are no wheelchair ramps or elevators from low to high (and back) in the building. On a much lesser level, good teachers put nearsighted students closer to the front, so they can see." "What could be more disabling than a brain that's not working? Sadly, kids with 'behavior problems' (even recognized learning disabilities) are often shunted to the criminal justice system whenever possible by school districts that either don't know or don't care that it *is* their job to teach *these* kids, too." "Fortunately, my wife and I were able to find a good lawyer (with a wonderful clue-by-four) to beat the local school district about the head and chest. And before I hear any damned yelping about 'government intervention,' let me point out that the last effort by a public school employee to get *them* off the hook was a phone call to the Governor's office, accusing *us* of abusing our child. The local state DHS office knew what the deal was (we adopted our son after being his foster parents, 'working' for DHS) so the school official convinced the state-wide office to send somebody in from 'waythehellandgone' with a pre-disposition to find us guilty of child abuse.
It took damn near a year to get *that* overturned. The only reason we haven't sued is we don't have enough money at the moment. The school district is a bit more tractable now, knowing we could hit 'em with the *big* hammer at any time." "Autism is *not* a crime, any more than depression, or paranoia, or being unable to connect with reality is a crime. (If the last were true, how many more people do *you* think would be locked up?) Those who are *ill* need and deserve treatment. Or would it be better for society to not treat the mentally ill, wait until they kill somebody, and execute that person? I think not." Flipping several Wal-Mart Oneders to Mike, Keith concludes, "Sorry about the RANT -- but this is (obviously) one of *my* hot-buttons. BOYC's, friends?" Peace be with you Keith Merritt The Ol' Goaler

If the child is considered disabled, he or she falls under the IDEA -
that's the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. There are federal funds available, and states and local school districts are required to see to it that the child gets an education equivalent as much as can be reasonably expected. This is called an FAPE, a Free and Appropriate Education. My 5 year old had PDD-NOS, a pesky learning disability because the child usually has skill levels all over the map - many way below, many way above. That's Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified.
momblan ...@bigfoot.com (Blanche Nonken)
That should be _has_ not _had._ She's on the gluten-casein-free diet, or was, but now gets the Seren-Aid enzyme supplement so her diet's about as normal now as any 5 year old PDD kid's is likely to be.

On Sat, 13 Jan 2001 10:30:12 -0600, "Keith Merritt" <snip arguements, since I don't really care to oppose them right now> My point is, if disabled people get their education paid for -without-
going to public schools, why should able-bodied people not get vouchers to go to private schools, or to enter special learning institutions of their own will?
If the disabled get privledges that able-bodied, able-minded people are ineligible for, that is almost by definition government discrimination.
Thank you very much, Goalie.

Where did you get the "without going to public schools" part? Keith and Nemo were both talking about how *public* schools are obligated to educate the disabled. Private schools and special learning institutions don't come into it.
Obliging public schools to educate the disabled as well as the abled is not giving the disabled a special privilege. I don't understand where you're coming from.

The disabled have to, also, if that is the most appropriate setting for them. But first and foremost, the schools have a duty to provide the education to each child, without charge.

Everything I needed to know in life, I learned in kindergarten. Like: "The answer is love, of course, not 'a good cheap hacking sword that can take punishment'."
Beki B...@home.com
It's not a voucher, Its a law that states that kids who are disabled are given whatever help is possible for thier educational and developmental needs. For instance, My son has something called arthrogryposis. He needs to have a special wedge for sleeping on because he aspirates. He also needs a brace to sit upright in a highchair and he can only sit for about fifteen minutes. The school would have to have a brace made for his chair and allow him to lie on the floor for the rest of the time per doctor recommendation. If the school has kindergarten nap time, they have to supply him a wedge. If the child has psychological probs, then the school shrinks have to see the child etc. Its' basically the governments way of helping them to be viable in society if at all possible. That way they hopefully wont end up being on welfare etc. Most handicapped folks lead "normal" lives just like anyone else, they just have to do things differently B

Not the point I had in -mind,- but a very good point nontheless. }:-{D From what I've seen, the only viable way to stop is never to start. As it is, the ONLY way to insure equal education for all is to nationalize ALL education, FORCE kids into boarding schools, and somehow institute INDIVIDUAL tutoring and educational guidance.
I believe that LOCALLY OPERATED, NON-TAX FUNDED public schools are a good thing, but that you -have- to go to those schools to get a free education, -and- you should get what you pay for.
As for Federal education programs... well, I suspect that for every dollar the government actually spent on the Goalie's charge for education, it spent ten to twenty finding ways -not- to spend that money on the Goalie's family. Additional funds were wasted at state and local levels in useless redundant programs dedicated solely to the proposition that bureaucrats need guaranteed employment.
My ideal educational system would be in two parts. One part (say, the morning hours) would be dedicated to academics, in which the children would be very strictly segregated according to potential or special needs and NOT mixed together. These would progress on separate paths to separate educational destinations, with no pretense of giving 'equal' education, but rather as much education as the students involved are capable of.
The second part, the afternoon hours, would be devoted to social, artistic, athletic, and technical education. Physical education, music, art, drama, languages, literature, ag/auto/welding/wood shop, home economics, all of these would fall into the afternoon courses, and in these cl***es the student body would be purposely homogenized for purposes of socialization. Only those totally incapable of socialized behavior would be screened out.

They dont. If I want to send my son to a private school, I have to pay for it like anyone else. They also have to follow ADA standards. My son is not school age yet, so I will get there when I get that far as to how I will deal with it. Right now, I am researching schools for him. Even in public schools, they are not the same and some are more prepared than others to take care of a child with disabilities. There are certain schools that do cater to disabled students. The one that comes to mind is Gallaudet where Mandy went to college for a semester. She had to pay tuition just like anyone else. Or am I missing your point?
How many "normal" kids need physical therapy in place of PE? how many kids go to see thier counselors at school? IME not a whole lot of them.
"Normal" kids and their families can utilize these folks, after all they are available for students and their families. Most of them dont need to, so they dont. How does that make them ineligible?
They should be.. my sisters and I were all in the academically talented programs through school. While I am not a nobel laureate, I ain't no dummy either. I could be a member of Mensa. My older sister was for a number of years. Intelligence doesnt equal ambition. That however is another subject entirely :) B

Which is, sadly, a great blunder on the part of our educational system.
Great intelligence does not include the ability to use and train that intelligence... and, by and large, our current system wastes that intelligence through things such as 'mainstreaming' and 'well-rounded curriculua.' Redneck

You have to go to -A- school. You do not have to go to a PUBLIC school.
As I understood the Goalie, his charge is not attending a public school, but is instead being educated in a different location which meets his medical needs, all at the public education system's expense.
If this is wrong, I hope the Goalie would point this out.
