PE in elementary school

(25 Messages)

The entire text of the Houston Chronicle article is below. A few questions for this astute forum, particularly for the *elementary* school teachers: (1) "There is some evidence that children who engage in physical activity may perform better in school, be more alert and less disruptive in the classroom than children who do not engage in physical activity,". True or false? (2) "teachers already have trouble fitting all of the academic subjects into the school day" True or fals ...

OT: Elementary school named after local Medal of Honor recipient

(23 Messages)

After years of discussion, the Marion County School Board decided to name a new school to be built this year after a local soldier who gave his life to save his fellow soldiers in 1969. The Hammett L. Bowen Jr. school to open next year. I was at the Marion County School Board meeting last night. It was standing room only as people made their feelings known about the name of the new school. -- Former professional electron wrangler. Michael A. Terrell Central Florida

Last week I had Kayleen and Kelly in the car after a tiring day out. They were getting testy and wanting to be home. I had to stop at a red light and the sun was in Kayleen's eyes so she moaned a bit, as they do " Grandma, how long do we have to be stopped here? How much longer until I can have a drink" Etc. So I told her that by the time she'd counted 20 the light would have changed and we'd be around the corner and the sun would no longer be in her eyes....so she counted. By 20 we we ...

CDC Foundation Announces Partnership with Cargill to Help ElementaryCDC Foundation Announces Partnership with Cargill to Help Elementary ATLANTA – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Foundation (CDC Foundation) has partnered with Cargill, CDC, and the American School Health Association (ASHA) to award mini-grants to 47 U.S. elementary schools to improve their physical activity and nutrition policies and programs. Schools will use the mini-grants to implement components of their overall health programs, such as building walking tracks, improving physical education curricula, or increasing healthy food choices in lunch rooms and classrooms.

This mini-grant program is made possible by a $300,000 grant from Cargill to the CDC Foundation. ASHA recruited health and education experts to review the applications and select the final 47 grantees from almost 600 applicants. School health experts from CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health will provide technical assistance to the grantees to help them effectively implement improvements.

Emergency Rooms Struggle to Help Area Teens and Children inEmergency Rooms Struggle to Help Area Teens and Children in NEW YORK (Jul 5, 2005) Each year thousands of teens and children in Manhattan require emergency medical services for psychiatric crises. Many have made a suicide attempt or are at immediate risk of suicide. These children and adolescents are evaluated and held in non-psychiatric pediatric emergency rooms, which lack the necessary psychiatric staffing and facilities, or in an adult psychiatric emergency setting – a scenario that is often frightening for children. In response to this problem, New York's first comprehensive program dedicated to responding to child and adolescent psychiatric ...

Since opening in October 2004, the C-CPEP has resulted in reduced use of restraints and sedation, lower hospitalization rates, fewer referrals of children to psychiatric facilities far from their families, and a system of referral for follow-up services. The C-CPEP program delivers every teen and adolescent a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and decisions for the next steps in care as rapidly as possible (generally within four hours). The program is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week with child and adolescent psychiatrists, nurses, social workers and psychologists. The facility is designed ...

Therapeutic Boarding Schools for Troubled TeensTherapeutic Boarding Schools for Troubled Teens Not all local schools are equipped to deal with complex issues of troubled adolescents, particularly those with behavioral or emotional problems. Some school districts offer continuing education programs to keep students in school so they can complete their high school education and earn a diploma. Some of these alternative school programs offer behavioral intervention and counseling, even intensive mental health and special education services for both the student and the family. However, most parents do not want to wait until their teen ...

What many parents find is that their child needs to be removed from the immediate environment, particularly if their peer group has significantly influenced their behavior or there is an issue with substance use. Therapeutic boarding schools promote both academic and behavioral success, and allow the teenager to thrive in a structured, safe environment away from any negative influences in the school or social environment in their home town.

private boarding schools boarding high schools troubled teensprivate boarding schools - boarding high schools - troubled teens Although most parents first see signs of issues at ages 11-12 if their kids are headed down a self-destructive path, the age group of 13-18 is when it generally reaches a crisis. The largest percentage of teens in residential programs are in the 16-17 year old range. Parents find that when a child reaches this age group, problems that were manageable can become completely unmanageable. The strategies parents have tried again and again seem fruitless, and frustrated parents can be at a loss of how to help their child. As high school graduation ...

Many parents may have the feeling that "time is running out" to find a solution and give their child a chance for a decent, productive life. It isn't too late. However, if a problem has been allowed to progress for many years, often the best intervention is one that is full time--one that allows the child to catch up academically and pushes the teen to face his or her poor decisions and atttitude. In a residential program adolescents focus on the self-defeating behaviors and attitudes that have held them back or damaged their relationships and progress into ...

Back to schoolBack to school This laissez-faire system in which teens are more or less on their own in the working world means that it is one area of family life where parents are also on their own. There are no school officials, and there is no school policy to backstop them. (Though some school officials are nervously aware that if there is ever some newsworthy problem, the educational system will probably end up with a public relations black eye, anyway).

Cheaters From grade school through high school, teachers are on the prowl for students who take short cuts Gone are the days when students tried to get around preparing for tests by writing significant dates on their wrists or taping an answer sheet inside their jackets. Not that we—or our little darlings—ever did such a thing. Innovative ideas for cheating that were never contemplated, even in the 20th century, have found a home in 21st century schools. Who would have ever thought students would ...

4 groups present charter proposals4 groups present charter proposals If you think the atmosphere is not conducive to new charter schools, though, you'd be wrong. Four groups have applied to open schools in 2008, initially serving about 900 children. Within five years, the schools hope to enroll almost 2,000 students. Nancy Scowcroft, the district's charter school supervisor, said Pasco would welcome high-quality programs to the mix. She had not yet reviewed the applications, which were due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, so she could not comment on what's been proposed. That might be because the high-quality charter schools have enrollment ...

Many types of sex ed programs in countyMany types of sex ed programs in county Guest columnist Sara Palmer (“Teen pregnancy a focus in May,” May 25) implied that teens are primarily being given “abstinence only” education. Ithaca Pregnancy Center staff and volunteers travel to area schools presenting abstinence. We observe that few classrooms emphasize abstinence — rather they have full-fledged contraceptive education programs. IPC abstinence programs require only two class periods. The 90 minutes dedicated to promoting abstinence is a very small part of the health curriculum. We have found no “abstinence only” curriculums ...

And “...policymakers and health educators have questioned the Title V (510) abstinence programs, believing that the focus on abstinence may put teens at risk of having unprotected sex. The evaluation findings suggest that this is not the case. Program and control group youth did not differ in their rates of unprotected sex, either at first intercourse or over the last 12 months. Less than 10 percent of all study youth (8 percent of control group youth and 7 percent of abstinence program youth) reported having unprotected sex at first intercourse. Over the last 12 months, ...

Barack Obama Obama Announces FY08 Federal Funding RequestsBarack Obama: Obama Announces FY08 Federal Funding Requests One of its most popular attractions and teaching tools at the Adler Planetarium is the Sky Theater.
