Charter Schools The Issue Is OversightCharter Schools: The Issue Is Oversight More than a year after the state warned a Hamden charter school to fire him, Lyndon Pitter still had a hand in the school's operations - and, state officials say, in its bank account. Investigators want to know why the Highville Mustard Seed Charter School wrote a series of checks for at least $150,000 between October and April to Pitter - who was already the target of an investigation for allegedly spending thousands in school funds on personal expenses from Armani suits to limousines. The case could make Pitter, the school's longtime ...

The unusual degree of freedom has produced success stories such as the Amistad Academy in New Haven and Jumoke Academy in Hartford. Fraud, experts say, is relatively rare in charter schools. Among charters that have closed, many simply managed budgets poorly and ran out of money. But, in a small number of cases in Connecticut and elsewhere, there have been abuses, too, educators say. "It is the dark ...

9 charter schools hit with asbestos fines9 charter schools hit with asbestos fines The settlement was reached Friday after a year of negotiations between the EPA and the schools over fine amounts, said Dean Higuchi, an agency spokesman. The violations were found when the EPA conducted surprise inspections at the schools in May 2006, Higuchi said. No asbestos-containing materials were found in Toltecalli or Hiaki, but both schools had failed to create a mandatory "asbestos management plan." Hiaki also had never previously been inspected for asbestos-containing materials. Administration at Southside Community School was unaware they needed to have an "asbestos management plan" ...

Area charter schools fined for asbestos violationsArea charter schools fined for asbestos violations EPA inspectors discovered in May 2006 that the school operators had failed to conduct inspections to determine if material containing asbestos was present in school buildings. They also failed to develop plans to manage any asbestos they found, the news release says. The operators of Toltecali Academy, Calli Ollin Academy, and Hiaki High School each were fined $7,300. At Calli Ollin Academy, the inspector found asbestos materials, including about three feet of damaged pipe insulation. A letter from the builder at Toltecali Academy ...
