I remember people telling me that I should be prepared. That if I were to develop a stronger sense of self and be more confident in my dealings with him, he would likely fight back and things would get worse before they got better. Well, I think I've made a lot of good strides against my depression. I do feel stronger and more confident. I have a way to go of course, but at least I'm going in the right direction. And things have indeed gotten worse -- much worse -- at home. The anger, contempt, ...

Dr. Irwin Hyman has devoted much of his life to combatting both physical and emotional abuse of children, focussing his primary efforts on schools and public education systems. He observed that children develope a "school-phobia" and sought to find out why. His discovery was the prevalence of what he called emotional maltreatment. The belittling, the name-calling, the scape-goating ... often used simply as control mechanisms, yet the psychological damage was profound. Sticks and stones ...

While sitting at my desk the other day.......I began to think about the effects on children in regard to divorce and how it relates to the emotional abuse of children. Here are some thoughts. - Child loses the basic security of 'the' family home by divorce. (Child's emotions are adversely affected) - Child now must bounce back and forth between the two different homes. (Child's emotions are adversely affected) - Child must now adjust to two differing styles of parenting (as if they didn't have e ...

The Home School Court Report Vol. XVIII, No. 1 -- Charter schools About the author Roy Hanson is the director of Family Protection Ministries, which he established in 1986 to monitor the California state legislature for bills affecting home schooling families and their freedoms. God has used FPM (working closely with Home School Legal Defense Association and Christian Home Educators of California) to win dozens of legislative battles against a full-time, predominately non-home school friendly state legislature. Roy and his wife, Debra, home schooled their children from first grade through high school.
alternative school: Definition and Much More from Answers.com Many such schools were founded in the United States in the 1970's as an alternative to mainstream or traditional classroom structure. [2] A wide range of philosophies and teaching methods are offered by alternative schools; some have strong political, scholarly, or philosophical orientations, while others are more ad-hoc assemblies of teachers and students dissatisfied with some aspect of mainstream or traditional education . In 2003 there were approximately 70 alternative schools in the United Kingdom . In the UK public funding is not available for alternative schools and therefore alternative schools are usually fee-paying institutions. [3]
Sometimes, particularly in the United States , the phrase alternative school can refer to a school , which practices alternative education . This is a much broader use of the term, covering all forms of non-traditional educational methods and philosophies, including school choice , independent school , home schooling , and alternative school . However, even the narrower usage of the term may refer to a range of school type such as a school with an innovative and flexible curriculum aimed at bright, self-motivated students; a school for students with behavioral problems; or a school with special remedial ...

dougieperc @ 2007-01-14T16:16:00 My application to your anthropology department comes after four years of teaching traditionally underserved students in public high schools. I entered teaching as a response to the inequities that continue to permeate American society today and, more personally, in response to the marginalization I experienced as a poor, openly gay teenager in the late 1990s. Despite experiencing physical and emotional abuse from both students and faculty members while in high school, I persevered and was thankful for the opportunity to attend Sam Houston State University as an undergraduate. While writing my undergraduate ...
Unfortunately, the complete lack of and antagonism toward a culturally-relevant curriculum at Westbury yields a student body lacking the confidence and self-efficacy to perform academically. Basic cognitive and educational psychology reveals that students must have these traits in order to learn, and Jeffrey Duncan-Andrade of San Francisco State University has affirmed that school reform is ineffective without an initial push toward equipping students with this confidence and self-efficacy. Clearly, Westbury High School departs from basic cognitive and educational psychology and attempts ...
hope_healing @ 2005-06-10T21:17:00 A Servant of Christ Jesus My Lord and Savior ( hope_healing ) wrote, @ 2005 - 06 - 10 21:17:00 The Elimination of God from Home and School You may wonder at this title, but the fact is that in America and in some other countries where Christianity is still legal - it is not accepteble. What I mean is, in America you can find a church on nearly every corner. It is not hard to find a church to go to or a Bible to read. However - a lot of churches have been infiltrated by preachers who will preach what the people want to hear and therefore avoid uncomfortable topics such as sin, repentance, hell, ...
In my LJ recently, I stated that it seems as though 'minority groups' are treated better when it comes to Freedom of Speech rights. Yet, Christianity seems to have no recourse when it comes to complaints concerning it being attacked. (Okay, so it wasn't in those words, but close *g*) I sure wish groups like the ACLU would speak out for Christians on occasion *g* I come from the UK, which does have a state church and there is no separation between church and state. It didn't cost my parents anything to send me to a Church of England school. ...
Hurricane Katrina and NCLB law The article raises interesting commentary regarding the federal government's unwillingness to concede that the law has several discrepancies that states are grappling with. Schools are dealing with situations of poverty, ability to speak English, emotional abuse and other factors that affect achievement but nevertheless go unacknowledged by the federal government. US Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings reluctantly granted waivers in the event of natural disaster to the schools that no longer existed or no longer had students to teach. What about a waiver for the school systems across the nation who have ...
Comments kathleenb said: Tawana, I read your post this morning and I've been reflecting on it as I have traveled around the district today. First, I'd like to say thank you for pushing my thinking a bit. My concerns with NCLB have been very localized, I realize, and focused on our unique situation and repercussions of this legislation here in the state of Maine. Our state "Learning Results" were established years ago and Maine's state testing program began in 1984 with a very different purpose than that of NCLB. However, ...
