Dr. Irwin Hyman has devoted much of his life to combatting both physical and emotional abuse of children, focussing his primary efforts on schools and public education systems.
He observed that children develope a "school-phobia" and sought to find out why. His discovery was the prevalence of what he called emotional maltreatment. The belittling, the name-calling, the scape-goating ... often used simply as control mechanisms, yet the psychological damage was profound.
Sticks and stones might break bones, BUT words .... also ..... hurt and wound.
From: Hyman and Penroe, Journal of School Psychology.
"Several studies of maltreatment by teachers suggest that school children  report traumatic symptoms that are similar whether the traumatic event was physical or verbal abuse. (Hyman, et.al., 1988; Krugman &  Krugman, 1984; Lambert, 1990).
Extrapolation from these studies suggests that psychological maltreatment of school children, especially those who are poor, is fairly widespread in the United States...."    "...schools do not encourage research regarding possible emotional maltreatment of students by staff or investigatiion into how this behavior might affect student misbehavior...."  "... A good percentage of these students develop angry and aggressive responses as a result.  Yet, emotional abuse and its relation to misbehavior in schools receives little pedagogical, psychological, or legal attention and is rarely mentioned in textbooks on school discipline (Pokalo & Hyman, 1993, Sarno, 1992)."    "...As with corporal punishment, the frequency of emotional maltreatment in schools is too often a function of the socioeconomic status (SES) of the student population (Hyman, 1990)."

Robert posted: Many folks argue that CPS later re-abuses children.
A noted psychologist, BTW, has noted that kids seem *meaner * than what he remembers.
There is no doubt that Eric Klebold and Dylan Harris were affected by HS events.
We live in the same type of neighborhood--a child of a different religion and not a jock was h***led so badly that the parents moved from this top-notch SD.
Of course, some argue that HS is all about finding your niche==be it jock, nerd, cheerleader, car-tinkerer, or romantic chaser.

Thanks for taking the time to read and offer input. My own thought is that Klebold and Harris show the limits of the diversity approach. We work hard to tolerate differences, but some difference call for intervention and interdiction, not "laissez faire" toleration.
Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were not underprivileged, nor were they a racial minority, as far as I know. In fact, they had all the comforts, in theory.
I realize there are a hundred verdicts on what deserves the blame for Columbine. (UNspanked kids, absentee parents, affluence without parental rapport and guidance. They even blame the goth/deth subculture, and of course the vicious cruelty of those who picked on the two boys who only wanted acceptacne.) Oh, I left out guns, the easy availability of very potent guns. And teachers who ignored warning signs. And parents who bought toys, vehicles, computers, music, lots of THINGS ... but where was gudance, values, discipline, AND LOVE???
****** From what I can gather, the boys were outcasts of sorts. I have heard that they suffered merciless ridicule, ostracised by their peers, tormented.
I was very impressed by a group begun by Peter Yarrow (Operation Respect)  Don't laugh at me. Don't call me names.
Don't get your pleasure from my pain.
In God's eyes we're all the same.
Some day we'll all have perfect wings.
 Don't laugh at me.

Perhaps we are retreating to a Hobbesian society.
Let this be our tete a tete.  The yahoos won't get the allusion.

Robert, I don't read French, and apparently neither does Fern.  I certainly don't see a response do you?

[Thanks for your answer in French]   [I don;t know how to say all that   I would like to say.]   [I believe that Kane said I am evil.
But evil or not, it doesn't matter.]   [If I can't be 'perfect' at least   I am who I am. At least I am different.] Fairly simple French (that's all I wanted to try.) In English I can say it better. I know I am branded names, most of which I feel are largely unjustified.  I appreciate that Fern -- and also you and Chris Dugan, and Frank Bloater, many others -- don't have any drive which makes you lob insults, hurtful language, obscenity.
I also come from a religious heritage. My grandparents were devout Old believers. But these people ... Kane, Gowch, and Susan (calls herself Mrs. Kite) are some kind of sex police, obsessing about sexuality, pretending that they are GOD's appointed authoritarian's, and again and again and again their posts are used to send personal attacks, blistering verbal epithets and name-calling.
And because others said nothing, they apparently think what they do is morally correct.
DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.
Kane excuses his hate, by saying he is a big bad mean man, and aint afraid of perverts.  He says it is okay for him to abuse (bad people?) because they "like it" and "get off on it." He describes the act of masturbation in detail and Mrs. Kite commends that obscenity because this newsgroup is an ADULT newsgroup.
