Parg and Jet both want to reject the results of the family violence studies, which unanimously show that women commit the same amounts and types of domestic violence as men, by pointing to crime statistics and hospital emergency room admissions which show more women showing up with complaints and injuries than men. The difference in results between crime surveys, hospital surveys, and family violence surveys is addressed in this paper by Murray A. Straus: THE CONTROVERSY OVER DOMESTIC VIOLENCE B ...

Domestic Violence in the Workplace Domestic Violence doesn't stay at home. It goes to school. It goes to the grocery store. It goes to work. Domestic violence is a workplace issue. It affects the workplace in terms of bottom-line economics, increased medical expenses, absenteeism, increased risk of violence at work, productivity, and employee safety and well-being. Believing that workplaces are ideally poised to make a difference in the lives of victims of domestic violence, Attorney General Ric ...

by Richard L. Davis If we keep an open mind, too much is likely to fall into it. -Natalie Clifford Barney Approximately two decades ago I was drawn, like a Bostonian to baseball, to the issue of domestic violence because the criminal justice system minimized, marginalized, and ignored victims of domestic violence. Today I remain interested, invested and concerned because women and children, with the help of our public policy makers and domestic violence advocates have been accepted as victims wh ...

Civil and Political Rights Nga tika a iwi me ngā tika tōrangapu In accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the ideal of free human beings enjoying civil and political freedom and freedom from fear and want can only be achieved if conditions are created whereby everyone may enjoy his civil and political rights, as well as his economic, social and cultural rights. The individual, having duties to other individuals and to the community to which he belongs, is under a responsibility to strive for the promotion and observance of the rights recognized in the present Covenant. Reluctant citizens gear up for first election It was the father who first determined that Bhutan would turn toward democracy, and speculation on the reasons for his decision includes the self-destruction of the Royal Family in nearby Nepal and the rise of a Maoist guerrilla movement there. Early in his reign, the Royal Family of neighbouring Sikkim was overthrown after India stirred up trouble among Sikkim's Nepalese population. Bhutan's Nepalese community, many of them living in refugee camps, has reason to resent the existing powers in Bhutan.
A former minister and the brother of Bhutan's queens -- four sisters who are married to the former king -- lead the People's Democratic Party. Bhutan's Prime Minister Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuck and six cabinet ministers resigned to contest elections, a move widely seen to bring legitimacy to the election process, but one that has also brought dissatisfaction as would-be candidates, having given up their jobs, find they have been sidelined by political candidates.
A European Showdown Regarding Mexican Femicide Frontera NorteSur An alliance of Spanish, Polish and German legislators is watering down a resolution in the European Parliament that proposes tougher actions against femicides in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, and Central America. Moving behind the scenes, the lawmakers have introduced more than 100 killing amendments to the strongly worded document. Sponsored by Green/European Free Alliance Deputy Raul Romeva Rueda, the original resolution would create a femicide coordinator; elevate women's murders to a priority status between governments; monitor the treatment of women ...
Watch out - the state is after your hard drive Rafael Behr Comment Watch out - the state is after your hard drive Rafael Behr Sunday August 12, 2007 The Observer The Ministry of Defence last week ordered British soldiers to stop blogging, putting videos on YouTube, joining online chats or sending text messages without a superior officer's permission. But the soldiers carried on regardless, posting caustic commentary on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It was a mini digital mutiny. I'm surprised the MoD has taken so long to deal with the problem of khaki samizdat. Censorship is part of military life. Imagine ...
V-DAY, UNICEF call for end to rape, sexual torture against girls Highlighting the issue of violence against women and girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), renowned playwright Eve Ensler has chronicled her first-hand encounters with women in eastern DRC, where sexual violence has become a routine weapon of war. Her account appears in Glamour magazine today. Amnesty Internation reports sexual violence is everyday May 31, 2007 Any lawyers out there? I’m sadly not qualified myself, but I still can’t help thinking that it’s probably against the law in the UK to threaten MPs. If, for instance, I started telling MPs that unless they voted in Parliament the way I wanted them to, I was going to make life difficult for them. I think if I did that, I would be on some pretty thin legal ice. And we have to remember that MPs are supposed to represent their constituents interests, not their own, so to treat their vote as a statement of their personal opinion and attempt retribution against ...
