Battle over Texas sex-ed textbooks Second-largest buyer could influence rest of U.S. DALLAS (Reuters) -- The lesson for Texas teens is that the only safe sex is no sex, and that may be a lesson that heads nationwide. Texas educators are debating what will be taught in new sexual education textbooks for its high school students. The 15-member Texas Board of Education is considering and will likely approve four books, all of which extol the virtues of abstinence. Three make no mention of contracep ...

1039-First Steps in Education CHAPTER VII FIRST STEPS IN EDUCATION The first process of education is obviously not a mental process. When a mother talks to a baby, she is not encouraging its little mind to think. When she is coaxing her child to walk, she is not making a theoretic exposition of the science of equilibration. She crouches before the child, at a little distance, and spreads her hands. "Come, baby—come to mother. Come! Baby, walk! Yes, walk! Walk to mother! Come along. A little walk to its mother. Come! Come then! Why yes, a pretty baby! Oh, he can toddle! Yes—yes—No, don’t be frightened, a dear. ...
Couple turning kids into authors Couple turning kids into authors Alison Stanton Special for The Republic Aug. 9, 2007 06:25 AM Mona and Mel Hedin strongly believe that inside every child, there is a successful author waiting to come out. With this in mind, the Ahwatukee couple recently launched The Creative Literacy Project, a computer-based activity that lets children preschool age and older write their own books, which may then be purchased as keepsakes. The Hedins said the program, which is available at www.creativeliteracyproject.com is both easy and fun to use, and can be used ...
Student vacations on wane Starting Wednesday and picking up again Sept. 15, every teacher in the Erlanger-Elsmere system will begin making personal visits to students' homes to meet the parents and convey the goals of the school and the role parents are expected to play. "We've always talked about having the students and parents involved," Sander explained. "A lot of times, you didn't have a good experience at school, especially those in ESL (English as a Second Language) and we just want them to know we're here for them."
Kimber Sez: Stop Snitching A long-time comrade of Mayor John DeStefano, Kimber interrupted the press conference—which had attracted a small mob of reporters—and hammered the students with questions of his own. Had they talked to Mayo? Why not? And what is Youth Rights Media—the nonprofit, youth media organization that the students belong to—anyway? With that the student who was fielding Kimber's questions abruptly ended the press conference and walked off.
But Ashley Burney, a senior at Hill Regional Career High School and a youth organizer at YRM, says the students wrote their own comments and organized the press conference themselves. "Those were speeches that they wrote. They were their experiences and what they were going through at the alternative schools." The YRM staff "basically only teach the youth how to operate the cameras," says Burney.
