Seeking data about multilingualism outside the US

(25 Messages)

I'm in the process of writing a paper for a college class about the necessity of second-language education at the elementary school level, and there's a chunk of data that I'm sure must be out there somewhere, yet it continues to elude me... I would like to know what percentage of the population of other first-world countries can fluently speak more than one language, so I can compare that the US's pitiful 14%. If anyone out there in Usenet land knows where this data might be found, whether it b ...

Americans don't speak languages other than English?

(25 Messages)

Sorry if off-topic but I came across this statement by a Dutchman and have just about had it. Please read and understand the following information: One-tenth of the population of the United States lives in the state of California. One-fourth of the population of California is foreign-born. Fully 50% of the residents of the county (my numbers may be a bit out of date but that's about 9 million people) of Los Angeles speak a language other than English at home. Those of us who spoke English at hom ...

Adopting of English proposed; irks many THE WASHINGTON TIMES ATHENS ??” A proposal to adopt English as a second official language has split Greece into two warring camps, aroused national passions and exposed a weakness in the country's educational system. "Never," said Vyron Polydoras of the opposition New Democracy Party, who said, "Language is the most definitive factor and characteristic of our ethnic identity." Critics of the proposal claim that while English might be &q ...

At a time when English is widely considered an advantage in global competitiveness for any country, many fear this former U.S. colony is slipping.

Warning to Petronas Stay out of Ogaden and deal with the ONLFWarning to Petronas: Stay out of Ogaden, and deal with the ONLF On the other hand, this part of the report offers a most convincing proof of the nature of the Abyssinian occupation of Ogaden; never did the Abyssinian monarchical (Haile Selassie), communist (Mengistu) and bogus-federal / republican (Meles Zenawi) rulers feel Ogaden as their own land; to them, it remained always a foreign territory where they imposed their rules, from where they tried to extract all possible natural resources, and to where they exported their racism, thuggish Amhara / Tigray administrators, and useless language.

Murder among the ruins David Peace39s novels draw on true crimesMurder among the ruins: David Peace's novels draw on true crimes Min, min, min, min, miin. As David Peace and I talk about the onomatopoeic Japanese phrases the British crime writer uses in his latest novel, Tokyo Year Zero (Faber and Faber, 368 pp, 16.99 pounds), it seems fitting that our conversation should be accompanied by the sound of cicadas outside his office in northeast Tokyo on a midsummer's day. Unable to find work in recession-hit Britain, he ended up teaching English in Istanbul and didn't pick up a pen in anger again until he landed a job as a teacher in Japan in 1994. Even then, the scars ...

The Sad State of British EducationThe Sad State of British Education I just came across some British textbooks that were recently passed onto me for our children to use. We are living in Germany but home educating them in English. One of them was called “Problems in Physics” and it is already sadly outdated - every problem has a math component. My dh and I had a good laugh about that - when our children eventually do their GCSE’s using these textbooks for revision, they will be in for a surprise, I’m sure.
