Women leery as date-rape drug use soars Emergency rooms say mentions of flavorless, odorless sedatives rose to more than 6,700 in 1999.
By Mike Ellis mike.el...@indystar.com June 10, 2002 When Allison Morgan goes to a party, she takes extra care to know where her drinks are coming from.
"I get very wary around people I don't know," said Morgan, a senior telecommunications major at Indiana University. "You don't know what's going to happen once you start drinking." Morgan, like many college students, stays alert because of worries about date-rape drugs. Law enforcement officials and rape awareness groups believe the practice of covertly placing drugs in the drinks of women to knock them out and then have sex with them is a growing threat nationally.
"On college campuses, it's a huge problem," said Anita Carpenter, chief executive officer of the Indiana Coalition Against Sexual ***ault.
Odorless, flavorless sedatives slipped into drinks can render someone unconscious and vulnerable to sexual ***ault. Victims are often left with little more than fleeting memories of the incident and little to no proof they've been drugged, making prosecution difficult.
Among the most common date-rape drugs, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, are MDMA (Ecstasy), GHB, ketamine and rohypnol.
Figures supplied by the Drug Abuse Warning Network, a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, indicate that the use of such drugs has skyrocketed since the early 1990s. Emergency rooms in 21 of the nation's largest cities report that mentions of MDMA, GHB, ketamine and rohypnol increased from 337 in 1994 to more than 6,700 in 1999. That means one or more of those drugs is believed to be the reason that a person has been taken to the emergency room.
While the use of such drugs appears to be growing nationally, few statistics about the use of date-rape drugs in Indianapolis are available. Officials at the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensics Services Agency said they tested last year for 100 cases of MDMA, five of ketamine, two of GHB and none of rohypnol. None of the MDMA cases involved a date-rape allegation, officials said. The forensics agency, which serves all police agencies in the county, conducts the tests when warranted by the circumstances of an alleged rape or the condition of a patient.
However, many who deal with rape victims believe those figures don't tell the whole story. Victims often say they might have been drugged, but in many cases they aren't tested. That's because most date-rape drugs p*** out of the victim's body quickly.
"The times that people have come in and said, 'I think I might have had something slipped in my drink,' it's far too late to gather evidence," said Suzanne Pauwels, a counselor at Indiana University's Sexual ***ault Crisis Service.
Only one case involving the use of a date-rape drug has gone to court in Marion County in recent years. Two men were accused of using GHB to incapacitate two women at an Eastside party in October 1999 and forcing them to have sex.
Authorities managed to pinpoint GHB as a contributing factor only because a doctor immediately recognized the symptoms when the victims were taken to the emergency room, said Lisa Judd, who handles sex crimes for the Marion County prosecutor's office.
"That doctor was on the ball, and that's the only reason," Judd said.
The men, Richard Washington, 24, and Royce Glover, 27, were convicted of rape in April 2001; each received a four-year prison term.
Because of the growing concern about date-rape drugs, some private companies have begun offering kits that allow women to test their drinks. Among the first was a British company that last year began marketing Dip-It-In, a chemically treated card designed to test for date-rape drugs.
In the United States, a Florida-based company is hoping to raise awareness about date rape by selling coasters that contain testing strips. The company, Drink Safe Technology, is offering its product online and soon plans to have it available in pharmacies and convenience stores nationwide.
"The average college student, they're at a club they don't know, and somebody buys them a drink, they can't drink it," said Francisco Guerra, one of the company's owners. "Now you will. You can just take the test." Some rape-awareness groups believe the tests may have some value.
"Anything we can do to help identify this stuff ahead of time is worth a shot," said Monique Clupper, director of the Center of Hope at Wishard Memorial Hospital.
But Clupper and others worry about the accuracy of such tests and whether they might give women a false sense of security.
"They haven't been tested well enough to tell if they're truly accurate," said Carpenter, of the Indiana Coalition Against Sexual ***ault. "And just as sure as we test them well enough with, say, rohypnol, somebody will come out with something else they won't be able to test." They also wonder about the practicality of the tests. Many young woman might forget to use the tests or feel embarr***ed about using them in front of others.
"People aren't going to pull these out of their pockets and say, 'Wait, I can't take that until I test it,' " said Pauwels, of the IU sexual ***ault center. "They're just not going to do it." Morgan, the IU student, agreed with that view but said her opinion might change if a date-rape case were to occur on campus.
"If it became an ongoing thing, people would go out and buy it," she said.
Still, the best defense against date-rape drugs, most experts say, is to remain vigilant and to use common sense when visiting bars or parties.
"If you're going to drink," Carpenter said, "know where your drink is at all times and don't let anybody else have access to it." Copyright 2002 The Indianapolis Star

What about men being drugged and raped by women? We know it happens, why don't they care?
http://www.straightdope.com/cl***ics/a3_092.html MDMA, IIRC, isn't ecstacy.
Not necessarily because they were fed it involuntarily. Lots of people love taking E, MDMA and whatever else.
No rape allegation? Hmm...

A major surprise is the growing number of lesbian date rape cases.
Because there is no semen or other DNA evidence, there is usually no way to convict the person who has committed the act.
Because in the past men were the usually suspected of the crime, one of the ways to protect yourself, was to have your girlfriend look after your drink, and you look after hers. Some lesbians are taking advantage of the situation and have had the victim to their evil plots served up on a platter.
In a letter to the Lesbians Galore website a woman boasted of having drugged five other females at a bar (on five seperate occ***ions, not at the same time), after the victim started to feel odd, the woman would offer to drive the victim home.
After that, the final scene to this horrible plan was played out with utter disregard for humanity.

Interesting logic here. So before the first study on abuse against women was first made it wasn't an _important_ issue? And what in your opinion was the reason of making such a study in the first place concerning abuse against women then if, by your logic, it wasn't even important at the time?

And since WD is ignorant of the most basic science and research protocols, he has absolutely no idea that studies are done based on the evidence.
Since there is no evidence for women using date rape drugs on women, why would there be a study in the first place?
