I am interested in getting others opinions on our situation. Or even more helpful if any one has first hand experience. Alexis has been going to a private school for 3-K TWTH 8:30-12. We now have the option of sending her to the local public school for 4-K. They are offering a Dual Language cl*** (Spanish/English). I am considering sending her to this cl*** because I think it would be wonderful for her to have the exposure to the language. I am however concerned that she may miss some concepts early on while acquiring the second Language. Then again it is only preschool and let's say that the most she gains is more Spanish it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. I am back and forth on the matter. From what I understand they plan to teach for the most part of teh day in Spanish, except for language arts (ABC's, word recognition). Thanks for any input. PS. My husband is fluent in Spanish and does speak to her in Spanish but she is by no means fluent in it. I would say she might have a vocab of 100 wds.

I would share your concern that, in K-4, she might miss some concepts while learning the language. However, I think the concepts they are teaching at that level could easily be "taught" at home just during the course of the day. And teh advantage of getting more fluent at that age cannot be underestimated.
In Puerto Rico, my girls have had Spanish as a second language (SSL) since last summer, starting in summer school which I sent them to in order to have some base for the SSL they would be getting and be graded on the following year. This has been nothing short of wonderful. Not only do they have some working knowledge of Spanish, but grammar and syntax in English are reinforced when differences are pointed out between the two languages. So essentially, having SSL has helped their understanding of English grammar though I would say it might have marginally hurt their spelling given the different vowel sounds in the two languages (English long 'e' is Spanish 'i". etc.).

I can't think of a single thing she could possibly miss that would be of any consequence. Preschool is mainly about getting used to the school social life, getting along with others, used to the routine, etc. That's what helps the kids do well in kindergarten later, not whether or not they are taught specific curriculum items. I think you should go for it, unless you have any reservations at all about the general quality of the cl***.

On Thu, 1 May 2003 11:05:03 -0600, "sharon fitzgerald" [...] I believe OE-quotefix is supposed to fix some of OE's shortcomings.
See, e.g.
<http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/software/oe-quotefix/> seems to be mirrored at: <http://flash.to/oe-quotefix/>.
(I think it also fixes OE's broken sig separator.) Or just use Agent or Free Agent.

HEAR HEAR.
A second language is such a HUGE benefit now (and for the future), and Spanish is one of the most useful ones. If they can get a grounding and your dh can talk to them consistently in it, they will gain enormously.
