We just spent another $200 Billion! The pentagon just ordered 3,000 new fighters from Locheed Martin, for a total of $200B. These new fighters are both stealth (radar-evasive/absorbant) and supersonic... rather interesting, information still forthcoming....
Damn we are clearly back into debt...

Good thing the republicans gave all that money back to the taxpayers and cut taxes (and are further trying to do so, as we speak). That $300 rebate check sure made me a rich slob, fer sure ;-) How they can keep that up and pay for all the current/future unexpected expenses and appropriations they are piling on now, I have no idea. Deficit spending will have to cover it, I reckon. So much for downpaying the national debt in our lifetimes... Reaganomics lives!

"Agelmar" i...@mediaone.net

The concept of a social security lockbox was absolutely blasted out of the water. Any extra money that can be cut by strapping down a bit has been long spent. We're mobilizing troops, which is very expensive, stockpiling anthrax vaccines which aren't FDA approved, buying craploads of antibiotics, shooting off $12million missiles, rebuilding NYC, bailing out the airlines... and sending out rebate checks, and now Bush and the republicans feel that more tax rebates would stimulate the economy... my ***... the only thing that is going to stimulate the economy is deep discounts for the christmas season. You want to stimulate the economy you bail out the retail sector so that they can lower prices and encourage spending. Government spending is good to a point. You don't want to cut gov. spending in a time of recession (which Bush said he wanted to do, lmfao) as it is bad for the economy. However, you don't want to spend so much that you go further into debt than you were when daddy was in office either.
Oh well, at least the $200b (the largest ever defense contract) is going to an American company...

I'm ***uming the second part is a joke, but the first part... are you serious or are you just BSing? I mean, we currently do have vertical takeoff jets, they're just expensive, and a bit limited in their other capabilities... however, vertical takeoff would be quite ideal in carrier situations, the catapult is quite dangerous...
...

ppkh ...@aol.compud3w3d (Grand Fromage)

No.  It uses fiber optics to take color information from one side of an object and project it onto the exact opposite side, making it nearly invisible.  The technology just became workable recently, it's been in development for a long time.  An F-22 modified with one and a sound dampener cannot be detected by anything short of ramming into the thing.
Quite serious.  Check out the design.  The main engine nozzle can tilt 90 degrees downward for vertical takeoff.
This plane is less expensive than just about anything but an A-10, and the VTOL doesn't lower its other capabilities.  It's intended to replace all major current combat planes--A-10, Harrier, F-16, F-14, F/A-18...

Damn, you have a link to any info somewhere? I just heard the announcement on C-SPAN... no tech specs really...

ppkh ...@aol.compud3w3d (Grand Fromage)

Not much information.  Mach 2+, I saw the video of it taking off vertically, the invisibility portion is among the various projects that are just coming out, like the new laser weapons and the Air Force's space combat academy, I don't have any particular links but Google is pretty good with this stuff.

I've got mixed feelings on a one size fits all services fighter, but they've needed to update the aircraft for a long time now.  I'm not sure this was the best way to do so, just have to get more info The first one was good, and the proposed one for lowest income brackets might do some good.  The corporate one is mindless though.
If they want to do something on those lines,  just make the tax breaks take effect only if the company has zero layoffs (net) or employee growth.   They could make it up with a tax hike on dividends and stock sales of companies that jettisoned too many empoyees.   Give them a tiny carrot and a giant spiked stick.
That part congress knows how to do darn well.   We didn't get out of debt by jacking taxes, but by the economy growing to fill the gap.

Win XP isn't FDA approved, nor are shoelaces.  The FDA is good for some things, but for rapid evaluation of something they stink like Farnham's old socks!
The smallpox vaccines are a wise move.  They should never have dropped that program to begin with.   He he, for once I agree.  I don't think these rebates are what we need.  Job Security is what people want right now, or some way of making sure things are stable.
Most of them can lower prices.  They just try to play the old game of maximizing profits.   I suspect quite a few will be teetering by next spring if they don't realize that having a positive cash flow can be more important than boosting GMROI.
He, I suspect the "cuts" would be programs Bush is opposed to anytime.

They've got V/Stol?   Cool.   Any idea of how much of the old Himat technology made it into these birds?   I hope so.    We might have an awful lot of that to do over the next few decades.

Depending on technology used to achieve this, the benefits can extend to in flight combat as well.

Yes, the previous line of vertical takeoff jets were called Harrier jump jets, iirc.

We never did get out of debt. We just began actually paying down the national debt. Now that's over, for the forseeable future. There's a big difference between having (temporary) budget surpluses, which are no more- and actually paying off that huge national VISA bill that's been laying on the country like an overgrown warthog for generations. Yes, the good times of the 90's were due to the economy then- but now the economy is pretty weak, to say the least. Not gonna be any huge sack of tax windfalls dropping down Uncle Sam's chimney, this Christmas. So, what do we have now? Weak economy, huge drop in tax revenues, huge leap in wartime costs and investing in rebuilding New York and buying more weapons... etc, etc, ad infinitum. And it's just gonna snowball, as the war goes on. And what do they think will cure this huge and widening gap between revenue and capital ouput? Why, give more taxes back, of course :-) Idiots. The republicans only ever know one worn out refrain- cut taxes! It's their cure for every economic turn and twist, as well as herpes and the common cold. Perhaps it will stymie anthrax, as well. But tax cutting had nothing to do with the gravy days of the late 90's, and cutting them now even further, just when there are so many huge investments being made by our country, makes even less sense.

ppkh ...@aol.compud3w3d (Grand Fromage)

No idea.  I've never seen anything like what these things have.  The F-16 had enough thrust to take off vertically, but you couldn't really get it onto its rear end to use it, this one simply tilts the engine nozzle down and goes with it.  Really simple, but incredibly effective.

"Agelmar" i...@mediaone.net

Actually, the FDA is right on this one. Many military personell who were in a position to do so left the military because of this vaccine. It has a very high rate of side effects, many of which are very serious. I would read up on that one if I were you. Not only that, but the company which makes the vaccine has been cited by the FDA many times, they have a lot of bad batches going out, poor conditions... I personally would *not* take the Anthrax vaccine if given a choice.
Agreed, but all of the other antibiotics...
And if they send over ebola, we're just plain old f'd (along with everyone else on the earth..) Yep..
You forget though, that maximization of profit is a complex formula, price determines not only profit but also number of buyers. High price = less buyers, more profit per unit. Low price = more buyers, less profit per unit.
Have to strike a balance there, and this season, if they want to push through enough units, they will have to lower prices drastically...
Yeah, I doubt he'd cut his faith-based initiave...
that you go further into

"Agelmar" i...@mediaone.net

The thing is, neither of the released videos show it going from its vertical takeoff stage to its flight stage. (i.e. you're 20ft int he air or whatever the specs are, time to shoot off). I'm wondering if this part is still a bit shaky, or if they just haven't shown it?

ppkh ...@aol.compud3w3d (Grand Fromage)

I saw it on the news.  The engine simply tilts upwards slowly and it moves forward, once the engine is back to normal it's going fast enough to have lift from the wings.  The VTOL is all the videos show because it's impressive.

Cool.... but I somehow doubt they'll be demoing the fiberoptic stealth part of it :-)

ppkh ...@aol.compud3w3d (Grand Fromage)

Doubt it.  Plus it's not exactly standard-issue, the article I saw quoted a $2 billion pricetag for each modified F-22, making it the same price as a B-2.
Ouch.
