Murder, American Style, the book

(25 Messages)

Murder, American Style is a book by Alex Alvarez and Ronet Bachman, printed in 2002. We bought it in England for 23 pounds, Amazon lists the book at $34 but not yet distributed. The book is part the Wadsworth Contemporary Issues in Crime and Justice Series. The authors are academic. The book has a number of statistics and facts, some of which I had not ran into before. For instance, the % of use of firearms in homicides was an average of 60% in the 80-89 period and rose to 67% in the 90-98 perio ...

Violence Against Women

(25 Messages)

According to the CDC, in 1994 they established a program entitled "The Family and Intimate Violence Prevention Team (FIVPT)". Sounds good. It then goes on say that the CDC was appropriated in fiscal year 1997 $14.3 million to prevent violence against women. So much for objectivity, I suppose. "CDC funded three state health departments in fiscal year 1994 to address family and intimate partner violence issues. The states will inventory existing data sources and prevention programs; ...

SafeYouthorg Teen Facts Community Violence Prevention InitiativesSafeYouth.org - Teen Facts - Community Violence Prevention Initiatives Communities across the United States are beginning to mobilize to confront the problem of youth violence. Some are developing new violence prevention programs and finding ways to bring funding into their communities. Others are learning to better coordinate existing efforts and use their resources more effectively. Teens often play an important leadership role in these efforts. They bring energy, initiative, commitment, and a unique perspective that too often has been ignored in the past. What are the key ingredients for a successful community violence prevention effort? Successful ...

Violence prevention programs are most effective when all members of the community embrace and support the effort. It is important to assess community leaders' and residents' beliefs and attitudes about the problem of violence. In some places, residents may not acknowledge that youth violence is a problem. In others, they may recognize that it is a serious problem, but may not believe that prevention efforts will make a difference, or they may believe in and support only one particular approach to address the problem of youth violence. For example, community members are less likely to support efforts to increase ...

The Community Giving Resource Violence preventionThe Community Giving Resource: Violence prevention Why is violence prevention important? Violence happens in every community across the nation. It affects and involves people of all ages, from the very young to the elderly. Violence affects all racial, educational, and socioeconomic groups. Low-income communities, however, are disproportionally affected by violence. These communities have greater exposure to contributing factors, fewer protective factors, and less access to appropriate responses to violence.

Barriers and challenges Building resilience to violence can be challenging. A lack of understanding of what constitutes effective violence prevention is one underlying challenge. Violence is often an emotionally charged issue, fingers are pointed as blame is assessed. Communities may be reluctant to challenge long-established attitudes or practices that could contribute to violence prevention. Frequently, efforts to address violence in a community are fragmented, lacking a coherent strategy and venue for planning.

Oakland Department of Human Services City County NeighborhoodOakland Department of Human Services - City County Neighborhood The Initiative uses a unique community-based approach to violence prevention that focuses not just on traditional approaches to crime reduction—such as law enforcement—but on improving a broad range of indicators that are directly correlated with high rates of violence in communities, such as the lack of economic opportunity and constructive activities for youth, blight and physical deterioration, and the absence of strong networks among community residents.

Community Building Coordinators are working in each neighborhood to organize residents so that they become involved in developing their own violence prevention plans and acquire the leadership capacity to effectively advocate for and undertake community improvement projects. Examples of community projects underway in the two neighborhoods include: block clean-ups, reclaiming neighborhood parks, organizing around liquor store nuisances, and planting community gardens.

UN An Organization For Peace Kamala Sarup Peace groups and UN organization, on both local and international levels, have important and effective roles to play in the process of peace resolution. Shape Your Nonprofit Website to Generate the Actions You NeedShape Your Nonprofit Website to Generate the Actions You Need Shape Your Nonprofit Website to Generate the Actions You Need By Nancy E. Schwartz At this point in time, almost every nonprofit organization counts heavily on its website to generate donations, program participation and volunteers, among other goals. What’s ironic is that, now that we’re more experienced and comfortable with the Web, many nonprofits have diverted their focus from making sure their sites are maximized to engage users. Here’s an example: I’ll never forget when a local museum re-opened ...

To Snitch Or Not to Snitch Earl Ofari HutchinsonTo Snitch, Or Not to Snitch Earl Ofari Hutchinson The resistance of blacks to provide information that could help catch killers has frustrated and infuriated police and prosecutors, increased the spiral of violence that racks some poor black neighborhoods, and deepens the fear and panic of many blacks over violent crime. Though the anti-snitch movement has been roundly denounced by many black leaders, victims of violence, and gang violence prevention groups, there's still a brisk growth industry in peddling T-shirts with the words "stop snitching" printed in bold letters that ...

The long history of police-black community conflict, the fury that many African-Americans feel over the countless number of blacks that have been jailed and even dumped on death row merely on the word of a street or a jailhouse informant is a sore point. A study by Northwestern University Law School Center on Wrongful Convictions found that in the 100 wrongful death penalty convictions of black men in the past quarter century, the majority were convicted on the perjured testimony of alleged eyewitnesses. Numerous studies have shown that blacks are far more likely ...

The Men39s Group Monitoring GuideThe Men's Group Monitoring Guide Sitting in the shade of a large burned out cinderblock building we met with members of the ELWA men's action group. They were delighted to respond to our questions about how the Male Involvement Project has affected themselves and others in their community. As sounds of drumming and singing emerged from the building, and children played noisily nearby, we listened to the men talk earnestly about how their lives had changed as a result of their involvement in the men's action group. A community leader described how he is now hosting gatherings at his home where he is "preaching" about the Men As Partners approach ...

We then moved to another corner of the building to sit with members of the women's action group to hear their perspectives on the men's action group (MAG). They described the significant changes that the men's action group has inspired in their community and the increased their feeling of safety for women and girls that has resulted. They described how the men's action group contributed their time and money to get t-shirts printed for the women's action group, and is helping them build a women's center. And, even though there are times ...
