He was supposed to be one of the unsuccessful suicide bombers from yesterday's incident.  Apparently up to 20 members of the special anti-terrorist squad ( SO 30  I think it's called) had been following him for some time.

The police said that it was directly connected to their investigations into yesterdays attempted bombings in London.  Not only did he refuse to stop, he vaulted the security barriers,  dashed down the escalators and tried to get on the train.  As I understand it they were concerned ythat he was about to detonate an explosive device under the huge coat he was wearing.

It may be that shooting somebody for knocking on your door at night, or trying to let themselves back into their house via a window is acceptable in America but we don't want to de-generate into that sort of behaviour here, it would mean the terrorists are winning.
I wonder how I would feel if a member of my family, who happened to be wearing a ruck-sack, was shouted at to stop and panicked and ended up being shot.

<BIG snip> When you are in the thick of it, there is not much time for reading rule books.
If the copper hesitated and the 'bomber' got on the train and an explosion followed, people (you, maybe) would be asking why the police had not acted when they had the chance. In the heat of the action people - all people, do act out of the ordinary. It's what makes 'heroes' do extraordinary things, and it causes itchy trigger fingers.
Try and place yourself in that coppers shoes. Re-live the moment. How would you have reacted? Remember, you are trained to apprehend suspects and big suspects you apprehend in a big way.
I rely on the police to act in my best interest.
If I didn't, vigilante action would follow.
Then the terrorists really will have won.
Will you be petitioning for police firearms to be withdrawn and replaced by 'tickling sticks'?

Having read all the replies re-Man Shot !!...The next question is ...Were they 'Justified' by the evidence of upon investigating his rucksack after shooting him dead...Was there 'Explosives' in his bag or around his body ...or not ??
It appears that the question has been overlooked..at least to me here in Oz !...Does anyone know ?

It's not law, it's habit.  They can kill people with dangerous driving and they can shoot people for carrying table legs.  It's a short step from that to putting five bullets in someone's head.  Why five I don't know.
