From The New York Times, 8/30/01: http://www.nytimes.com/2001/08/30/national/30BRFS.html By Fox Butterfield WASHINGTON LINK BETWEEN GUN USE AND LIMITS States that require the licensing and registration of handguns make it harder for criminals and juveniles to obtain guns in their state, says a study being published today in the journal Injury Prevention by researchers at Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.
In states with mandatory licensing and registration, 33 percent of handguns used in crimes came from dealers or gun shows in the state, the study found.
By comparison, in states with either licensing or registration, but not both, 72 percent of guns used in crimes were traced to sources in the state.
And in states with neither restriction, 84 percent of guns used in crimes were acquired in the state.
Only seven states, including New York, New Jersey and M***achusetts, require both.

Criminals can't get guns in their home states so they smuggle guns from Virginia: NEW YORK (AP) Police charged five people from Virginia Wednesday with operating a gunrunning ring that smuggled more than 100 weapons into New York City.
The defendants allegedly smuggled unregistered handguns ranging from .38-caliber "Saturday Night Specials" to Tech 22 ***ault weapons. Officers posing as buyers spent $83,150 on 107 guns and 1,100 rounds of ammunition.
Three men and one woman were arrested Tuesday while delivering three 9 mm semiautomatic pistols to a motel parking lot, authorities said. A fifth defendant was in custody in Virginia.
Police said the guns were bought by the defendants' relatives and friends in Virginia, where it is legal to buy one firearm a month or up to 12 per year.

being a really liberal guy, i find it extremely odd that i cant get behind gun control. i cant resolve that we should take away a basic american right because people cant handle themselves, or others. i see both sides, but i just cant get behind registering firearms, because if we were ever in need of rising up against tyrranny, they would know who has what, and come and get them.
of course, i DO believe thtat people with previous violent crime convictions should not be allowed to buy handguns. but isnt that a law of hte land anyway? im not sure just proving that i cross the aisle on issues, andrewfus

No Licensing and registration reduces the ability of honest citizens to own firearms for lawful pursuits. Do you really think criminals are going to register their guns?

Define Saturday night special. The very tern is an attack on the poor. The liberal press wants to deny the poor the right to defend him or herself.
Not everyone can afford a $600 defense pistol, but cheap .380 or .32 is good enough. BTW there are very few .38 caliber cheap handguns. .38 special is found in the more expensive target and police revolvers.
***ault weapon is a liberal press term for any gun that looks dangerous.
"Oh look at the scary gun it must be and ***ualt weapon." What happened to the 104 other guns? Is this entrapment? $83,150/107=$777 per gun The current MSRP on a TEC-22T is $161 that is new the used value is $135 in perfect condition.
(prices from the Gun Digest Book of Modern Gun Values a standard reference for gun traders) Oh there was the ammo 1,100 rounds Well giving you the benifit of the doubt let's say it was all 9mm. 9mm is packed 50 to the box and runs $12 per box at an average. (notice Wolf ammo is cheaper and Remington/Peters is more expensive this is an average) 1100/50=22 boxes 22X$12= $264 So let's take $264 from $83,150-264=$81,886 and divide $81,886/107=$765.29 final summing up $765 per gun that cost $161 is $604 profit per gun, sounds like entrapment to me.

It appears the purported study only looked at the negative impact of guns, and ignored all positive impact. It is surprising that they came to a negative conclusion.

you have to register for, and a licence to drive your car, dont you?
why should firearms be different?
"Bill Jernigan" billjerni...@surfcity.net
I agree, lets treat them both the same. That means you would need to leave your car locked in the garage with no gas in the tank, and a child safety lock on the ignition. You would not be able to sell your car yourself, and at any moment, your car can be designated as illegal because it holds too much gas in the tank, meaning you would have to turn it in with no compensation or be a criminal.

Register firearms and let law abiding citizens take a test, just as you do for a vehicle liscense, then allow those that p*** to legally carry concealed weapons.

You sound very reasonable unfortunatly the earlier gun laws sounded reasonable too, and look where we are. I will support no new gun laws.
Enforce the criminal laws we have and add mandatory extra time for all crimes committed with a gun.

It's not so much that I want new laws regulating guns, just the ability to legally carry one. In California, they all have to be registered already -
of course it did nothing to stop gun crimes, the problem is it's basically impossible for an average citizen in California to get a permit to carry a gun. Allowing anyone to carry a concealed weapon that can p*** a competency test would expand our rights to bear arms, not restrict it.
As a side note, some of the national laws that people want p***ed, such as waiting period ( I think in Ca. the period is about 15 days),no selling at gun shows without background checks, and only buying one weapon a month are already in place in California. Yet they did absolutely nothing to lower gun violence.

Of course the laws did nothing to stop violence, to the gun-grabbers that means we need more laws. Figure that out.
I was at a flea market today that would drive the gun-grabbers nuts. 3 rows each 100 yards long nothing but long guns and ammo both sides. All the wife would let me buy was some ammo, for her gun. Shotgun prices were outrageous, hunting season coming up.

Because we have a Bill of Rights.
As a side note, it seems that registration and licensing has not doen a thing to prevent wrecks, drunk drivers, speeding, and criminal ,isuse of cars.
