Here in Cape Town there is a movement to cut out 'alien vegetation that is, plants and trees that are not indigenous on the grounds that they consume too much water and are upsetting local genetic diversity in the 'fynbos' (the local unique flora). This seems sound. So I wondered how we humanists would react to an alien infestation. Imagine if aliens invaded the earth (like the Stepford Wives or the Triffids) and implanted aliens to compete with us who looked like us but behaved in subtly differ ...

One of the most important thing to know about ADHD is that children with ADHD are at increased risk for developing other types of behavior disorders, including Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD). The reason this is so important is that when this occurs, the long-term outcomes for children are likely to be much worse than for a child who has ADHD alone. The information below is intended to provide your with an overview of the diagnostic criteria for these conditions and how they differ from ADHD.
ADHD as related to Child Behavior Disorders Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder that affects 3-5 percent of all American children. It interferes with a person''s ability to stay on a task and to exercise age-appropriate inhibition (cognitive alone or both cognitive and behavioral). Some of the warning signs of ADHD include failure to listen to instructions, inability to organize oneself and school work, fidgeting with hands and feet, talking too much, leaving projects, chores and homework unfinish...
Disruptive Behaviours and conduct disorder Oppositional Defiant disorder (ODD) Conduct Disorder (CD) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Treatment for Oppositional Defiant and Conduct Disorder at the clinic is based on the premise that these behaviours are the result of a combination of a metabolic dysfunction and environmental factors. We approach treatment in a similar way to our treatment of children and adolescents with ADHD. There is however an added emphasis on Counselling and Behaviour Modification techniques. Please read our treatment model for ADHD.
The second, the adolescent-onset type, is defined by the absence of conduct disorder prior to age 10. Compared to individuals with the childhood-onset type, they are less likely to display aggressive behaviours. These individuals tend to have more normal peer relationships, and are less likely to have persistent conduct disorders or to develop adult antisocial personality disorder. The ratio of males to females is also lower than for the childhood-onset type (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Severity of symptoms
Child and Adolescent Developmental, Learning and Mental Disorders The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that treatment for ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder should consist of a comprehensive plan using MEDICATION AND/OR PSYCHOLOGICAL TREATMENT. Children with mild to moderate symptoms may ONLY NEED PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERVENTIONS to achieve significant improvement. Also, some research studies indicate that the use of psychological/behavioral interventions along with medication may reduce the dose of medication necessary for effective treatment.
Self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves, and our behavior clearly reflects those feelings. For example, a child or teen with high self-esteem will be able to: act independently assume responsibility take pride in his accomplishments tolerate frustration attempt new tasks and challenges handle positive and negative emotions offer assistance to others On the other hand, a child with low self-esteem will: avoid trying new things feel unloved and unwanted blame others for his own shortcomings feel, or pretend to feel, emotionally indifferent be unable to tolerate a normal level of frustration ...

Doctor's orders with Dr. Stephen Ponder Quality sleep is essential to good health. During deep sleep, the body becomes relaxed. In a person with obstructive sleep apnea, the airway collapses under the weight of the tissues within the neck during this period of relaxation. This is the size of your airway. Now compare the size of your little finger with the thickness of your neck. When the airway is compressed, it's a lot like trying to breathe through a straw under water. As this cycle of interrupted breathing repeats itself each night, people ...

The study monitored the ratio of two fatty ...
May I ask? West Roxbury - Question: My 3-year-old can’t sit still or wait for his turn in his preschool class. One of the other parents has suggested he may have ADHD. Isn’t it a little early to tell? Answer: “ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is usually diagnosed when a child is between 6 and 12 years old,” said Marcie Handler, Ph.D., a May Institute psychologist who specializes in child behavior disorders. “It is more difficult to diagnose in children younger than 6 because the symptoms exhibited may be part of normal development or reflect lack of exposure to highly structured situations such ...
Improvement Following ADHD Treatment Sustained in Most Children To understand why the initial advantage of medication wore off, the researchers examined medication use patterns that emerged after formal treatment in the study ended. They found that children who had been assigned to intensive behavioral treatment were more likely to begin taking medication, while those who had been taking medication were more likely to stop. For example, among children originally in the behavioral treatment group, the incidence of high medication use increased from 14 to 45 percent.
In a secondary analysis of the data that searched for possible explanations for the findings, in the same issue of the JAACAP , researchers led by James Swanson, Ph.D., University of California at Irvine, reported finding substantial individual variability in responses to medication. They identified three groups of children with different patterns of response. One group, about a third of the children, showed a gradual, moderate improvement; a second group, about half of the children, showed larger initial improvement, which was sustained through the third year; a third group, about 14 percent ...

My ODD Child Teens with ODD plus ADHD are much more difficult to live with. Their destructive and disagreeable behavior are purposeful. They like to push their parents anger-buttons. Every request ends up as a power struggle. Lying becomes a daily habit. Getting a reaction out of others is amusing to them. They are rarely sorry for the hurtful things they say and do. And they believe nothing is their fault.
ADHD: A Dialogue With a Non-Believer, part three Dear Sir, It was with some interest that I read the article What You Should Know About Attention Deficit Disorder by Edward W. after having it handed to me by a member of our church. There were elements of the article that were insightful, helpful, and needed to be said in a public forum, especially the discussion of the moral and spiritual dimensions of behavior. For this part of the article I applaud Mr. W. However, Mr. W’s discussion on the physiological/biological aspects of ADD ADHD was lacking to the point of being misleading to the readers. I am sure that Mr. Welch had no intention of misleading any readers, ...
Fidgety Philip A Brief History of ADHD In 1845, Dr. Heinrich Hoffman, a physician who wrote books on medicine and adults adhd psychiatry, wrote an illustrated book of children's poetry about children and adults adhd their characteristics. "The Story of Fidgety Philip" was a portraite of an ADHD boy. ADHD was not "discovered" by Hoffman, however, or for many years later. In 1902 Sir George F. Still described a group of impulsive children with significant behavioral problems which he ascribed to a genetic disorder and adults adhd not poor parenting. He was describing ADHD over 100 years ago. He called ...
