(20 Messages)

-DC5D76BF78A7.shtml Netherlands Panel Rejects ADHD Diagnosis as a Mental Illness The recent ruling of the Netherlands Advertisement Code Commission (NACC) concerning the diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may be a first step toward exposing in the United States what many experts long have argued is a fraudulent diagnosis. As the result of a lawsuit filed by the Dutch chapter of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, an international psychiatric watchdog organization, ...

curious about ADHD diagnosis

(8 Messages)

Hi, I have gone through an ADHD evaluation, or whatever its called, the doc cocluded that I have ADHD only she won't be able to give me an "official" ADHD diagnosis, the fact that I've also got cerebral palsy "right sided" hemiplegia, apparantly disqualifies me for this diagnosis. I got the brain injury at birth because I didn't breath for a few minutes. my CP is considered very mild and most people won't notice it (bugs me though;)). What's up with this? I thought that ADHD ...

NIMH Attention Deficit Hyperactivity DisorderNIMH: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Some people get better results from one medication, some from another. It is important to work with the prescribing physician to find the right medication and the right dosage. For many people, the stimulants dramatically reduce their hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve their ability to focus, work, and learn. The medications may also improve physical coordination, such as that needed in handwriting and in sports.

The stimulant drugs, when used with medical supervision, are usually considered quite safe. Stimulants do not make the child feel "high," although some children say they feel different or funny. Such changes are usually very minor. Although some parents worry that their child may become addicted to the medication, to date there is no convincing evidence that stimulant medications, when used for treatment of ADHD, cause drug abuse or dependence. A review of all long-term studies on stimulant medication and substance abuse, ...

MedlinePlus Attention Deficit Hyperactivity DisorderMedlinePlus: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Is it hard for your child to sit still? Does your child act without thinking first? Does your child start but not finish things? If so, your child may have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD for short.) Nearly everyone shows some of these behaviors at times, but ADHD lasts more than 6 months and causes problems in school, at home and in social situations.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity DisorderAttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder There has been controversy about the use of medications to treat both children and adults with Attention Deficit Disorder There have been articles debating whether Ritalin is over or under prescribed. When people ask me about this, I tell them that I can only answer for the children and adults that I have evaluated or treated. Yes, there probably are some individuals who have received medication when some other treatment might have been better. On the other hand, there are probably others who were ...

This article focuses on how to cope with every day occurrences in the lives of families affected by ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Often, it is the small considerations that make life easier or much more difficult for such a family. At the end of this article, I will give a few links to web sites and listserves which allow individuals to share their own experiences of "what works." However, one should remember that each individual is unique (this is doubly true for individuals with ADHD) and each family needs to work out its own coping ...

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD MayoCliniccomAttention - deficit /hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD ) - MayoClinic.com Problems generally associated with ADHD include inattention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. They can affect nearly every aspect of life. Children and adults with ADHD often struggle with low self-esteem, troubled personal relationships and poor performance in school or at work. Some coaches see LD diagnosis as cure for prepschool ruleSome coaches see LD diagnosis as cure for prep-school rule Word on the summer circuit -- via multiple coaches who opted only to speak about this subject with CBS SportsLine.com if granted anonymity -- is that a loophole has already been identified, one that will allow prospects to continue to accumulate multiple core courses in fifth years just like always. The only difference is they'll now have to -- legitimately or not -- first be stamped L.D.

Many doctors -- particularly those who are friends of a program -- can easily find a disorder to attach to a student-athlete, whether it's dyslexia, A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Disorder), A.D.H.D. (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder), A.P.D. (Auditory Processing Disorder), C.A.P.D. (Central Auditory Processing Disorder) or whatever. And once that's done, the Americans with Disabilities Act takes effect, meaning the diagnosed student-athlete is shielded by the federal law that gives civil-rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, sex, national origin, age and religion.

ADHD Linked Gene Variant Associated with Good OutcomesADHD -Linked Gene Variant Associated with Good Outcomes A comparison of MRI scans showed that the right orbitofrontal-inferior prefrontal and posterior parietal cortex were thinner in children with ADHD who had a common polymorphism, found Philip Shaw, M.D., Ph.D., of the National Institute of Mental Health, and colleagues. The polymorphism is the 7-repeat form of the 48-base pair variable number tandem repeat in exon 3 of DRD4 . In previous studies, the investigators found that the allele was present in 23% of 169 children with ADHD, but in only 17% of 265 healthy controls, and that this difference was significant. The gene encodes for the dopamine D4 receptor . Although ...

BETHESDA, Md., Aug. 7 -- Certain children with attention-deficit hyperactivity have thinner brain regions involved in the condition and tend to have better outcomes, researchers have reported. Action Points Explain to patients who ask that this study suggests that a common genetic variation associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder has also been found to augur well for children who carry it, with associated cortical differences normalizing by late adolescence.

Difficulties Making An Attention Deficit Disorder Diagnosis WithDifficulties Making An Attention Deficit Disorder Diagnosis With Making a proper Attention Deficit Disorder diagnosis early with infants is very important for their lifelong wellbeing; however it’s easier said than done. Diana Mahoney BOSTON - A diagnosis of maternal depression any time between 1 year before and 9 years after giving birth is a risk factor for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in school-age children, according to a study presented at a meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development. In addition, the likelihood of an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis in children is directly related to the chronicity of depression in the mother, said Anne Guevremont, M.Ed., a research fellow at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg.
