Ritalin is NOT Addictive when taken as prescribed

(21 Messages)

When taken as prescribed, methylphenidate is a valuable medicine. Research shows that people with ADHD do not become addicted to stimulant medications when taken in the form prescribed and at treatment dosages.2 Another study found that ADHD boys treated with stimulants such as methylphenidate are significantly less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol when they are older than are non-treated ADHD boys.3

ADHD An Update on Diagnosis and Treatment for KidsADHD: An Update on Diagnosis and Treatment for Kids Mimi's concerns about ADHD drugs are well-founded. Parents, physicians, and educators are questioning the rising numbers of kids under 18 now on ADHD medication. According to a recent report in the journal Psychiatric Services, ADHD-related doctors' office visits by children ages 3 to 18 more than doubled, from 3.2 million to 7.4 million, between 1993 and 2003. The number of visits that included a prescription for an ADHD medication also more than doubled, from 2.7 million to 6.6 million.

The jury remains out. In February 2006 an FDA advisory committee recommended that stimulants prescribed for ADHD carry a "black box" label -- the FDA's strongest warning -- informing consumers about the risk of heart attack, sudden death, and stroke . The committee reviewed 25 cases of sudden death, 19 of them in children who were 18 and younger, associated with ADHD drugs. Because some of these people had previously had underlying heart disease , the reviewers did not think the data were definitive in proving cause and effect.

Mental Health in the United States Prevalence of Diagnosis andMental Health in the United States: Prevalence of Diagnosis and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), previously known as attention deficit disorder, is a neurobehavioral disorder characterized by pervasive inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity that often results in substantial functional impairment ( Box ). Prevalence estimates of ADHD in school-aged children have ranged from 2% to 18% in community samples ( 1 ). As a proxy for ADHD diagnosis, respondents were asked, "Has a doctor or health professional ever told you that [child] has attention-deficit disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, that is, ADD or ADHD?" If an ADHD diagnosis was indicated, respondents were asked, "Is [child] currently taking medication for ADD or ADHD?" Estimates of reported ADHD diagnosis, current medication treatment among those with ADHD, and current medication treatment for ADHD among all children aged 4--17 years were calculated. Rates of medication treatment for ADHD among all children ...

The ADHD Diagnosis A Doctor Explains ADDitude ADHD amp LD AdultsThe ADHD Diagnosis: A Doctor Explains | ADDitude - ADHD & LD Adults For decades, the syndrome now knows as ADD was seen simply as a childhood behavior characterized by chronic restlessness, impulsivity, and an inability to sit still. In the 1970s, the number of ADHD diagnoses rose when ADHD doctors recognized that hyperactive children also had significant problems paying attention to tasks or listening to their teachers. This discovery paved the way for changing the name of the disorder in 1980 from "hyperkinetic disorder" to "attention deficit disorder" and to recognizing that some children suffer from chronic inattention problems without significant hyperactivity. That ...

ADHD Treatment for ChildrenADHD Treatment for Children A number of medical societies have published treatment guidelines for children with the diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). All of these professional guidelines for best practice treatment state that medication should be used in conjunction with psychological interventions for best over-all results. They also state that for children with mild to moderate ADHD symptoms, it may be advisable to try psychological interventions first before adding medication.

Data from a major national study conducted by NIMH known as the Mutlimodial Treatment Study of ADHD (MTA) shows that 33% of children with ADHD were "normalized" [exhibited test scores within the normal range for ADHD and ODD (oppositional defiant disorder)] as a result of receiving psychological treatment only without any medication while 68% were normalized as a result of medication combined with psychological treatment as compared to only 56% of those treated with medication only. Thus, roughly one third of children diagnosed with ADHD ...

How do we tackle the rise in the number of children on antiHow do we tackle the rise in the number of children on anti When Stephen Bailey was eight years old, he was prescribed Librium by his doctor. That was the beginning of a 24-year addiction to mind-altering drugs which, Bailey says, changed the course of his life and saw him descend into a world of fits, screaming and violence whenever he tried to withdraw. A commonly-used tranquilliser, Librium is one of the benzodiazepine family, and was prescribed to calm Bailey after he suffered from migraines and flashing lights in response to a routine set of vaccinations. "I became absolutely petrified of the world, full of terror, in particular that I would swallow my tongue," says Bailey. ...

Variant of the dopamine receptor gene may be associated with ADHDVariant of the dopamine receptor gene may be associated with ADHD A variant of the dopamine receptor gene may be associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and with thinner tissue in areas of the brain that handle attention, but also appears associated with better clinical outcomes among individuals with the disorder, according to a report in the August issue of Archives of General Psychiatry . ADHD is among the most heritable of neuropsychiatric disorders, according to background information in the article. Several genes have been identified as possibly associated with the condition. One of the most frequently cited is a polymorphism or different type ...

Journalistic Bias SyndromeJournalistic Bias Syndrome The Columbine Syndrome , a recent New York Times article by Judith Warner, addresses the prejudices shown by journalists and others in our society toward people with neurological differences. Not long ago, a news report on a particularly heinous rape-murder case gratuitously mentioned that the perpetrator had been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and dysgraphia; Warner characterizes this reporting as "a sinister detail that piled on a broad insult to all the gruesome injuries, victimizing a whole new set of people." Indeed, when neurological differences and psychological ...

Although news stories still mention race in descriptions of wanted criminals, I don't think that reflects a bigoted attitude because they describe wanted white guys, too. Yes, it would be better if they dropped the racial language altogether and just wrote that a suspect had a light complexion or a dark complexion, rather than describing him as white or black. Still, I don't think that's at all comparable to what was going on a hundred years ago, when many publishers and reporters were members of the Ku Klux ...

ADHD Signs and SymptomsADHD Signs and Symptoms By David Rossy The diagnosis and treatment of ADHD is such that many people have to find the methods and medications that worked for them on their own. Often the biggest experts in attention deficit disorders are the sufferers themselves - but why should this be? Unfortunately this disorder is difficult to diagnose and many leading medical authorities still cannot agree on a reliable method of testing for ADHD - never mind agreeing on suitable treatments! There are two sides to the attention deficit disorder story. On the one hand many children ( and some adults) ...
