NOTE; the reason offenses like these keep occurring is because presently the psychology field is not required to teach morals, right from wrong, or what the law is. Also, the very nature of counseling, which involves compassion and sensitivity, should require all psychology counselors to be women. Women are naturally much better at this than men. ADHD: Making Medication Decisions - FamilyEducation.com One Family's Story Amy Schneier of Needham, Massachusetts, said that she didn't want to put her son Adam, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), on medication until his second-grade teacher suggested that it might help. "I didn't want him to become reliant on medication. However, Adam's teacher said that she couldn't read his writing, he was distracted, and, when recess ended and his peers knew how to calm down in class, he couldn't." After consulting with a neurologist and hearing positive things about Ritalin, Amy and her husband Eliot decided Adam ...
Psychiatric Medication For Children And Adolescents: Part II Psychiatric Medication For Children And Adolescents: Part II - Types Of Medications No. 29; Updated July 2004 Psychiatric medications can be an effective part of the treatment for psychiatric disorders of childhood and adolescence. In recent years there have been an increasing number of new and different psychiatric medications used with children and adolescents. Research studies are underway to establish more clearly which medications are most helpful for specific disorders and presenting problems. Clinical practice and experience, as well as research studies, help physicians determine which medications are most effective ...
From ADHD Assessment to ADHD Treatment: Developing a Comprehensive The primary goal of evaluation is not, as some believe, diagnosis but rather treatment. Parents are not so much concerned about the specific diagnosis but rather their focus lies in helping their child with the problems that bring them to the assessment. Our treatments are designed to influence symptoms and problems for the better not change diagnoses. Thus, as Dr. Anastopoulos and colleagues pointed out in a recent issue of ATTENTION, a comprehensive assessment is not only thorough but geared towards defining symptoms, problems and behaviors in such a way as to facilitate the choice and initiation of medical, educational, behavioral, ...
It is important for you to be included in each step of the evaluative process, diagnosis and development of a treatment plan. Understanding a number of specific skill deficits causing varied and multiple problems in most if not all areas of your child's interaction with the environment, facilitates your ability to understand the need for specific and multiple interventions. The frequent lack of compliance with treatment recommendations in all areas of medicine and mental health is in part contributed to by a lack of understanding and involvement in the diagnosis and treatment planning phases. If parents perceive problems of ADHD as apart from them, ...
ADHD Medication Might Also Treat Hyperactivity Symptoms in Autism RUPP investigators conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled trial to determine whether methylphenidate would be effective in reducing hyperactivity in children with PDD. The trial included a one-week test phase to ensure that subjects could tolerate three different dose levels of the medication, followed by a four-week (crossover) phase in which children were given one of three doses of methylphenidate or placebo to assess effectiveness. Parents, teachers and investigators, who rated the child’s behavior, were blind to the child’s drug dose. Children showing a positive response ...

Overmedicated Kids By Margot Kim 08/13/2007 - Many experts argue we're an overmedicated society -- kids included. Last year, doctors wrote more than 30 million prescriptions for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder meds alone. Are they just looking for a fast fix, when many pediatricians are booked to spend only five minutes on each child? Four million kids in the United States are diagnosed with ADHD. More than half take medication for it. Nine-year-old Melissa is one of them. But after being put on the drug Strattera (atomoxetine), ...
ADHD Treatment Pays Off Does that mean you should pitch your child's Ritalin ? No, says Jensen; instead, it's good evidence that treatments should change over time, as the severity of symptoms dictates. "Many of these kids do better over time," Jensen said, "and they should start it [medication] and stop it as they need it."
Children's National Medical Center psychiatrist Jay Salpekar agrees. "This study clearly indicates that treatments need to change" from time to time, said Salpekar, who was not involved with the study. "No one has great info on the best treatment over time. We reevaluate our patients' needs each time they visit so that they don't get stuck in a rut."
Anti-depressant scripts reach million mark Under 18-year-olds were given more than 72,000 prescriptions for drugs for mental health problems last year, figures from the government drug-buying agency Pharmac show. Yet MedSafe warned doctors three years ago about the risks of prescribing anti-depressants to young people and the importance of monitoring them closely. Figures obtained by the Sunday Star-Times show the number of prescriptions for children aged six to 18 who are on anti-depressants - including the selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) which have been linked to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts ...

ADHD Medication and Autism/Aspergers Hi, Thanks for sharing these interesting articles. Dxs may be very limiting as even if a kid does not fit exactly a dx , he still has a problem. A dx implies often a neurobiliogical deficit and a medical solution ,ignores possible developmental delays and incompatability between caregivers and child. You made the point that medication treats symptons. These same symptons may be seen across many dx’s . IMHO it would be better , if pdocs etc would concentrate on the issues facing a kid , rather than trying to fit him into a dx. Kids who have ADHD or bipolar ( I am waiting for your article on comorbidity of ADHD ...
EMOTION REGULATION SKILLS: This refers to the cognitive skills one uses to control, modulate and regulate emotions, outside of the context of frustration. It is important to note that this is different from separation of affect (our ability to put feelings aside so we can think clearly in the midst of frustration). What do we see with children who have difficulty in this domain: chronic grouchiness, irritability, fatigue, anxiety and agitation. These chronic states make dealing with frustration difficult. These children can often find the energy to look good in certain ...

The 'atypical' dilemma; Skyrocketing numbers of kids are I see the day coming real soon, unfortunately, when typical tests for newborns will include tests for "psychiatric" disorders, followed by immediate drug prescriptions. That is obviously the direction society and medicine is going real fast. Instant customers from birth to grave. People need to have a reality check if they think that giving these powerful drugs to very young kids is going to solve the problem. A lot of these "disorders" rise up as a result of broken homes, family strife, abuse, poor nutrition, including ...
Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder What is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)? ADHD, also called attention-deficit disorder, is a behavior disorder, usually first diagnosed in childhood, that is characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and, in some cases, hyperactivity. These symptoms usually occur together, however, one may occur without the other(s). The symptoms of hyperactivity, when present, are almost always apparent by the age of 7 and may be apparent in very young preschoolers. Inattention or attention-deficit may not be evident until a child faces the expectations of elementary school. What are the different types of ADHD? Three major types of ADHD ...
