http://www.channelvip.com/philosophy/drugs1.html "...This elementary fact makes the child psychiatrist one of the most dangerous enemies not only of children, but also of adults who care for the two precious and most vulnerable things in life - children and liberty. Child psychology and child psychiatry cannot be reformed. They must be abolished." - Thomas Szasz M.D., Cruel Comp***ion.
"The pediatrician's wanton prescription of powerful drugs indoctrinates children from birth with the philosophy of 'a pill for every ill'."...
"Doctors are directly responsible for hooking millions of people on prescription drugs. They are also indirectly responsible for the plight of millions more who turn to illegal drugs because they were taught at an early age that drugs can cure anything - including psychological and emotional conditions - that ails them. A Dose of Sanity, by Sydney Walker III, M.D.
"A brilliant expose of the scandalous failure of modern psychiatry...If your doctor recommends Prozac, Xanax, Ritalin, or psychotherapy for your "mental" problems, read this book first. It justmight save your life."
- Bernard Rimland, PhD., Director of the Autism Research Institute If you are currently being treated for depression, anxiety or panic disorder, attention deficit disorder, a sleeping disorder, or any of a wide array of common behavioral disorders, this book could save your life.
If you are being given psychiatric SSRI drugs, prozac, paxil, zoloft, luvox, effexor, serzone, anafranil, fenfluramine, fen-phen & redux, you must read this book.
In A Dose of Sanity, Sydney Walker III, M.D. takes us inside the big business of contemporary psychiatry and reveals how, by sacrificing sound medical principals in favor of labeling-by-convenience and brain-damaging quick-fixes like prozac, paxil, zoloft, luvox, effexor, serzone, anafranil, fenfluramine, fen-phen, redux, and ritalin, psychiatrists cause untold suffering and destroy the physical and mental health of millions of people.
Reading like a detective novel, A Dose of Sanity, tells the story of dozens of men and women, many of whom suffered needlessly for years, simply for lack of a sound medical diagnosis. You'll meet the concert musician whose lifelong bouts with "psychosis" were actually due to undiagnosed typhus; the widow who was treated for "panic attacks" that turned out to be a thyroid dysfunction; the "hyperactive" boy whose symptoms were caused by exposure to carbon monoxide; and many others saved by the intervention of Dr. Walker and like-minded colleagues.

The Myth of the A.D.D. Child, by Thomas Armstrong, Ph.D.
The Myth of the A.D.D. Child exposes the mislabeling of millions of children as A.D.D./A.D.H.D., and the use of powerful mind-altering drugs such as Ritalin in treating children's hyperactivity. Not long ago, children who behaved in certain ways were called "bundles of energy", "daydreamers," or "fireballs." Now they're considered "hyperactive," "distractible," or "impulsive"-victims of the ubiquitous Attention Deficit Disorder. Tragically, such labeling can follow a child through life.
Worse, the mind-altering drugs prescribed for A.D.D./A.D.H.D. are unnecessary-and they are harmful.
By tackling the root causes of a child's attention and behavior problems -
rather than masking the symptoms with drugs - parents can help their children begin to experience fundamentally positive changes in their lives.

The Myth of the Hyperactive Child & Other Means of Child Control, By Peter Schrag and Diane Divoky Millions of children have been "diagnosed" as "hyperactive" or having "attention deficit disorder" and millions are now taking brain-damaging amphetamine-type medication, in many cases by order of school officials.
Millions of other children have been labeled predelinquent, found to have "deviant" tendencies, or said to exhibit "maladaptive behavior." Can these illnesses be in fact so widespread, or is this a new way the schools have found to deal with healthy children who seem, to parents or teachers, to present some form of difficulty?
This meticulously documented book covers all aspects of the rapidly spreading ideology of "early intervention," demonstrates how common problems become medical ones, and exposes the shoddy research that underlies those practices. Examining the "scientific" literature as well as searching out the underlying causes of this new and frightening trend, Peter Schrag and Diane Divoky document in telling detail the ways in which old-fashioned punishment and control are being replaced by new forms of medical and social treatment, teaching the younger generation that it must trust the state and its new "science" to define and manage the ways it grows up. The information and ideas they examine are critically important and profoundly disturbing.

Psychiatry - The Ultimate Betrayal, By Bruce Wiseman for the Citizens Commission on Human Rights There are reasons why today's high school graduate cannot read, why our elderly are dying prematurely, why racial conflict persists and families are shattering. Something penetrated every aspect of our lives -- our schools, our courts, our homes - doing so without most of us even knowing it. Authoritative and compelling, Psychiatry - The Ultimate Betrayal unmasks those who have betrayed in the name of help. It tracks the destructive bent compelling psychiatry, right from its historical beginnings. It lays bare psychiatry's web of influence, but most importantly lays out a plan of action we must take to survive as a society.

Toxic Psychiatry, by Peter R. Breggin, M.D.
In Toxic Psychiatry, Peter R. Breggin, M.D. exposes the hype and false promises surrounding psychiatry, and shows how dangerous and brain-damaging psychiatric drugs are. He demonstrates that: psychiatric drugs such as ssri's, prozac, paxil, zoloft, luvox, effexor, serzone, anafranil, fenfluramine, fen-phen and redux are spreading an epidemic of long-term, permanent brain damage; that mental illnesses have actually never been proven to be genetic or even physical in origin, and that millions of Americans are being incorrectly labeled with medical diagnosis and treated with mind altering drugs, rather than being patiently listened to, understood, and helped.
"Much of today's psychiatric science is based on wish, myth, and politics.
Breggin addresses this self-serving pseudoscience head-on." - Loren Mosher, M.D., Former Chief of the Center for Studies of Schizophrenia, The National Institute of Mental Health.

Important note: When trying to withdraw from many psychiatric drugs, patients can develop serious and even life-threatening emotional and physical reactions. It is dangerous not only to start taking psychiatric drugs, but also it can be dangerous to stop taking them. Withdrawal from psychiatric drugs should be done gradually and under medical and clinical supervision.

Ilena, I don't know what's gotten into your craw WRT AD/HD, but I thought you might be interested in some *real* facts about AD/HD and in doing a bit of reading about some of the people you've quoted.
First, the *real* facts of AD/HD (please read the *entire* article, found at the following link, as it is *very* informative): http://telosnet.com/review/adhd_1.html "In recent years, as new tools and techniques for studying the brain have been developed, scientists have been able to test more theories about what causes ADHD.
"Using one such technique, NIMH scientists demonstrated a link between a person's ability to pay continued attention and the level of activity in the brain.  Adult subjects were asked to learn a list of words. As they did, scientists used a PET (positron emission tomography) scanner to observe the brain at work. The researchers measured the level of glucose used by the areas of the brain that inhibit impulses and control attention. Glucose is the brain's main source of energy, so measuring how much is used is a good indicator of the brain's activity level. The investigators found important differences between people who have ADHD and those who don't. In people with ADHD, the brain areas that control attention used less glucose, indicating that they were less active. It appears from this research that a lower level of activity in some parts of the brain may cause inattention.
"The brain scans at the beginning of this article dramatize the difference between an adult with Attention deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (right) and an adult free of the disease (left)." Now, for a little heads-up about two of the "doctors" you quoted.
First, Dr. Breggin: http://add.about.com/health/add/library/weekly/aa112498.htm?terms=Bre... "One has to wonder who it is that has an agenda to push. Is it, as Breggin claims, an vast conspiracy to control the minds of America's children, or is it a major marketing plan by Breggin to sell his own books and services?
"The Consensus Statement released on the final day of the conference recognizes the need for more study on the long term effects of medication.
" 'Existing diagnostic and treatment practices, in combination with the potential risks ***ociated with medication, point to the need for improved awareness by the health service sector concerning an appropriate ***essment, treatment, and followup.' "This is a correct and appropriate response for any medication that is on the market. The report also states that " 'Emerging data suggest that medication using systematic intensive monitoring methods over a period of approximately 1 year may be superior to an intensive set of behavioral treatments on core ADHD symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, aggression). Combined medication and behavioral treatment added little advantage overall, but combined treatment did result in more improved social skills, and parents and teachers judged this treatment more favorably. Both systematically applied medication and combined treatment were superior to routine community care, which often involved the use of stimulants.
An important potential advantage for behavioral treatment is the possibility of improving functioning with reduced dose of stimulants.
This possibility was not tested.' "Again, this is a prudent and accurate conclusion. But, to read Breggin's version -_National Institute of Mental Health Fails In Its Latest Effort to Push Ritalin on America's Children_, one would think that the conference has banned the use of stimulants altogether.
"This is simply not the case. Certainly no child should be "drugged into compliance", as Breggin accusses NIMH of wanting to do. But Breggin's accusations do not hold up.
"Medications for ADD remain AN option, not the only option, but certainly one that is valid. As we learn more, we will hopefully find the correct balance between behavioral interventions and medication needs. We need to learn more about how to effectivly teach and parent these special children. At the same time, we need to recognize that the biological basis for ADD may require more than the adjustment of behaviors or environment.
"Before talking back to Ritalin, perhaps we should stop to listen to research." Also, some quotes from one of Dr. Breggin's books (Jan, I would suggest you read this book before believing anything else this "man" has to say.): http://add.about.com/health/add/library/weekly/aa081600a.htm?terms=Br... "The following quotes are from the book "The Psychology of Freedom -
Liberty and Love as a Way of Life" by Peter R. Breggin, M.D. The book was published in 1980 by Prometheus Books.
{On Sex Among Children {"'What if your daughter wants to have sex at age ten? Or what if she is taking drugs?' Whether my children have sex or take drugs should be no concern of mine unless I can really argue it is causing them harm. Even then, I have to prove my viewpoint to them, since I cannot use force." page 178 {"As I dramatized in After the Good War, permitting children to have sex among themselves would go a long way toward liberating them from oppressive parental authority. This is the main reason that parents fight so hard to prevent sex between children. Sexual freedom would allow their children to become truly independent of them." - page 209 {On Moral Authority {"Moral authority is always oppressive.... Most forms of psychotherapy, most aspects of psychiatry in general, nearly all religions, and most parents are moral authorities." - page 233 {On Parental Authority {"If a man grows up believing that his father's word is law, he will never become fully rational in understanding the oppressive effects of authoritarian religious, educational, or political institutions, and he may be tempted to indoctrinate his own children in submission to authority." - page 76 {On Parental Discipline {"Here is a good test of whether a punishment is legitmate - can your child use the same punishment on you?" ... "A parent has one legitimate, effective, and usually sufficient method of punishment - judiciously expressed anger. When a child ***aults you or compromises your freedom, show him or her that you are angry." ... Making a child stay at home, or 'grounding', in current slang, is one of the most contradictory, absurd, and self-destructive actions a parent can take." - page 168 } Now, on to Dr. Baughman: http://add.about.com/health/add/library/weekly/aa100100k.htm "The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) sent a letter on October 5 to the Chairman on the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Representative Peter Hoekstra, to clarify misreprensation by Dr. Fred Baughman of the AAN at the September 29 hearing.
"In oral testimony before the subcommittee, Dr. Baughman called AD/HD "the biggest fraud in America." He called both AD/HD and mental illnesses "a neuro-biological lie." Later he called "psychiatry as a profession," a "fraud." " http://add.about.com/health/add/library/weekly/aa100100l.htm "The biggest health care fraud in US history is the representation of ADHD to be a disease, and the drugging of millions of normalchildren ?" Every physician knows, "disease" equals "physical abnormality". Nowhere in the brains or bodies of these children, has psychiatry found an abnormality." {{Please note evidence of differences in brain activity discussed in the first article cited in this post.  If time permits, I will re-locate information on studies being done showing differences in brain structure as well.}} In article <ilena-2601011836390...@24-25-196-52.san.rr.com>,   il...@san.rr.com (Ilena Rose) wrote: <snipped>

Kitten, I know you are a fine parent. You certainly know what is best for your child. I have based my opinions on what I saw in my daycare centers. I have no desire to engage in this discussion. It would just be a repeat of what has already been said.

Fine.  Base your opinions on the writings of a "man" who believes that at the age of 10, children are emotionally mature enough to engage in sexual activity and that a parent should not stop his/her children from abusing drugs.
I prefer to base *my* opinions on what has been found in scientific studies, including those which have shown through use of MRIs that the brains of ADDers are PHYSICALLY DIFFERENT than the brains of NTs (neuro-typicals... or non-ADDErs).
