Tough love - tough shit

(13 Messages)

I've already said many times that I think "tough love" is an oxymoronic piece of shit, but what's getting me lately is how quickly Laura will spike a call by merely referring the listener to tough love. Today a stepfather called about disciplining a child. Laura gave her standard advice that step parents shouldn't try to discipline (which I somewhat agree with). The guy persisted telling about the behaviour that needed discipling and then Laura, in a total non sequiter, referred the gu ...

I really need to lose weight and become more active. This is such a challenge as I am sure many others understand. I hate to plan meals and I often grab food on the run or eat snack food simply because I hate to cook or have anything to do with the kitchen. I also have a thyroid problem and even though I do not feel I can blame my weight gain on this condition, I do feel it makes it harder to lose weight. To add to this I have had breast cancer and my oncologist told me to stay away from soy as ...

Alzheimers Disease Elder Rage Behavior ModificationAlzheimer's Disease: Elder Rage: Behavior Modification Then I started behavior modification on my eighty-three year old father. By using the techniques of "tough love" reward and consequences, he learned how to behave and control his temper most of the time, even with the onset of dementia. When he is on good behavior he gets rewards of praise, affection, attention and extra dessert. When he is asserting his life-long need to control and boss people around, he gets negative consequences: no dessert, minimal communication, no attention, no affection. He has finally learned that there is no "pay-off" for pounding his fists and screaming and yelling. He will not get his way period, ...

The Trouble With Tough LoveThe Trouble With Tough Love 29 Jan 2006 THE TROUBLE WITH TOUGH LOVE by Maia Szalavitz, Washington Post It is the ultimate parental nightmare: Your affectionate child is transformed, seemingly overnight, into an out-of-control, drug-addicted, hostile teenager. Many parents blame themselves. "Where did we go wrong?" they ask. The kids, meanwhile, hurtle through their own bewildering adolescent nightmare. I know. My descent into drug addiction started in high school and now, as an adult, I have a much better understanding of my parents' anguish and of what I was going through. And, after ...

FreeBehaviorChartscom Free behavior charts for the children in yourFreeBehaviorCharts.com - Free behavior charts for the children in your When kids use these behavior charts regularly, they can grow to be proud of themselves in ways that were previously out of reach. Proper use of these charts can actually help boost children's self-esteem, give them a sense of age-appropriate responsibility, and can help them find success in areas where they used to struggle - all while learning important and valuable life skills.

Behavior modification, though it sounds scientific, is actually a very simple concept. It involves moving away from inappropriate or negative behaviors, and toward appropriate and positive behaviors. In other words, getting less of what you don't like by focusing on more of what you do like. It's not about discipline. It's about appreciating the kids in your life when they're feeling good about what they do.

Ashley Crawford PostGenderAshley Crawford: Post-Gender Ashley Crawford: Post-Gender “Body modification is a personal choice. Primarily, my genitals are the site of erotic pleasure rather than a symbol of my identity or politics. My primary interest in changing my genitals is to enable me to do new and interesting sexual things.” Those of you who are regular ModBlog readers and BME members may remember that about a month ago I posted — I think for the first time — photos of a cervical piercing . I interviewed Ash Crawford, the piercer who’d done this DIY procedure on themselves, about the piercing, thinking that would be the focus of our conversation, but the interview soon ...

Afternoon Fix Celebrity Birthdays the 39Simpsons39 Movie MinuteAfternoon Fix: Celebrity Birthdays, the 'Simpsons' Movie Minute MOVIE MINUTE: THE SIMPSONS The Simpsons TV show is known for its long list of celebrity voice cameos, so why should The Simpsons Movie be any different? Well, producer and writer James L. Brooks explained why sometimes they had to make some hard decisions for the film version of the animated sitcom. "Finally, we always had to serve story, so even if we loved somebody who came in and it worked, it's always... when you do the tough cutting, it's always about story, not about how good it was." The Simpsons Movie is rated PG-13 and Brooks and his fellow producers couldn't ...

Cedric The Entertainer plays "Nighthawk," a popular radio DJ in Washington, D.C. in the late 1960's in the new film Talk To Me .  The movie also stars Don Cheadle as "Petey Green," an ex-con who joins the station and makes serious waves and becomes a community activist.  Cedric took the role before finding out that "Nighthawk" was a real person, which aided his portrayal of the man.  "To find out that he was a real person just made it even more significant to jump in and to be able to bring this character to life, you know?  I was just inspired to be a part ...

Very interesting article. Believe it or not "tough love" although manifestly stated to be "hardest" on the parents was latently a "relieving of responsibility" for the health of the children. Parents and/or their insurance companies are the ones who pay the therapist and other "experts". So the question of who is the client, or patient, became irrelevant. obviously you fiddle for who pays you. The emotional, mental and at time physical health of children were sacrificed in a movement to move away from the Neo-Fruedian cliche "it is the mothers fault". Guilt was the wheel money was the fuel. Forgive us. Tuesday August 7, 2007 - 11:00am ...

The Cult That Spawned the ToughLove Teen IndustryThe Cult That Spawned the Tough-Love Teen Industry Mother Jones - August 20, 2007 By Maia Szalavitz The idea that punishment can be therapeutic is not unique to the Rotenberg Center. In fact, this notion is widespread among the hundreds of "emotional growth boarding schools," wilderness camps, and "tough love" antidrug programs that make up the billion-dollar teen residential treatment industry. This harsh approach to helping troubled teens has a long and disturbing history. No fewer than 50 programs (though not the Rotenberg Center) can trace their treatment philosophy, directly or indirectly, to an antidrug cult called ...

Mitt Romney and the Teen Torture IndustryMitt Romney and the Teen Torture Industry WWASPS is a major player in the "tough love" industry, which runs camps, retreats, and other private reform institutions for teenagers deemed to be incorrigible. The WWASPS approach is an outgrowth of methods pioneered by Straight, Inc ., which operated a similar chain of BM facilities until being overwhelmed by lawsuits. Mel Sembler , the Flordia-based shopping mall magnate who operated Straight, Inc. with his wife Betty, is another key fundraiser for the Romney campaign .

At the same time that I realized ( by stumbling across the Welch report on the net) you had been fired, I was receiving letters from the JBS saying everything is A-OK. They also urged the faithful to stand with them during the Vance Smith crisis. Well needless to say I didn't. Since that time both my subscription to the New American and my membership ...
