I really need to lose weight and become more active.  This is such a challenge as I am sure many others understand.  I hate to plan meals and I often grab food on the run or eat snack food simply because I hate to cook or have anything to do with the kitchen.  I also have a thyroid problem and even though I do not feel I can blame my weight gain on this condition, I do feel it makes it harder to lose weight.  To add to this I have had breast cancer and my oncologist told me to stay away from soy as this is estrogen related and so was my cancer.  I also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
I see that eDiet allows for a person to choose the foods they do not eat, such as the soy and for me I also do not eat sea food.  Also some of the health conditions can be listed such as the high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  To top this off they now have different diet plans such as the zone which I understand works fairly well for people with thyroid problems.
The best part is the menu plan and shopping list which takes the work out of planning meals.
Now for my question.  Has anyone here tried this plan and if so what are your feelings about it?  I sure would appreciate any input you might have.
Thank you,  Betty

I'm responding from Alt.support.diet (ASD)- so my answers will be geared towards that group.
1.  If you want to lose weight, the first thing you will have to do is change your mindset.   Sorry to be brutally honest with you - but your poor eating habits is what made you fat.   The way you eat, the food you eat and the amount you eat - you've been overeating for your bodies needs - that is what made you fat.    If you want to lose weight - you need to change your mindset, and change your eating habits.   Yes - this means planning ahead so that you don't eat "grab and go" foods that are calorie dense.    It may also mean cooking.
If you don't like cooking - then try finding a day off during the week that maybe you can cook lots of food - then portion it out into containers that you can refridgerate and freeze - that way as the week goes by, you just grab and reheat and the food is already for you.   I do this every weekend - so that it saves me cooking time on my weeknights after work.     It also allows me to have more time for EXERCISE.  (Another key component to weight loss) We have others here in ASD that have thyroid problems.   We've got others here in ASD that have had bre*st cancer  (keeping the shills out).
Once again - ASD has members who have that.
I've seen a few people come to ASD who have used ediets.   What generally happens over here is - if someone tries ediets, they tend to stick to the ediets forums and not to usenet.   Makes sense - why not converse with people on the same plan as you.   The concept is a good concept - but once again - they will tell you the same as I did above - change your mindset.   Grab and go snack food made you fat.   You can't eat that stuff.   You have to permanently change your eating habits - lose the weight, then adjust those eating habits so that you maintain your weight.    If you just "diet" to lose weight, then go back to your convienent snacking -
you'll get fat again.
Learning about nutrition, digestion, portion sizes, serving sizes, calorie/carb/protein/fat counting - all that will help you realize what it takes to lose weight.
But - it all boils down to a simple formula - eat less, exercise more, repeat forever.
Good luck.

If you have a thyroid problem, take care of it first. Go to an endocrinologist and start taking pills. That would return you back to a normal level of energy wrt your weight. That is, if you are fat, it will return you to the proper energy level for fat persons. Not to the energy level of a slim person. I am also taking thyroid supplements due to earlier surgery of a tumor. So being hypothyroid is not a bar to weight loss.
I have no experience with any particular diet, however, I do have success with a diet/exercise combo that I picked for myself.
It involves some unviolable rules, such as do not eat after 6pm, and exercise. (walking 1 hr 40 minutes per day). So far I lost 21-22 lbs and need to lose about same amount further.
I find that eating after 6 is the most destructive type of eating.
I also limit the amount of food that I eat.

Forgot to add. I also had blood pressure problems before I started dieting. I had up to 150/90 pressure. After I lost 10% of my body weight, my BP is very consistently 131/75, which is completely normal and feels better.
Life is beautiful and any effort to lose weight is worth it. Staying fat is much worse than being a little hungry and exercising.

What does this litany of food difficulties have to do with becoming more active? There are medications to reduce cholesterol that are best used to supplement changed consumption rather than on their own. Walking a few miles a day, not necessarily all in one trip, will reduce your blood pressure, and so, probably, will reducing the amount of salt you take in. There are pills that will boost the effect. Replace butter with olive and canola oil, depending on what it goes on. (Fry eggs in canola.
Dip bread in olive oil with a little oregano, crushed red pepper, maybe a little grated Parmesan cheese.) Otherwise, say, "Gee. I really want to do this, but it's hard for me, so I won't." I'm not really a hard-hearted bastard. I lost two wives to cancer. You and your family have my deep sympathy. Use your time well.
Dieting might not be a worthwhile part of that.
Jerry

I hope you have been thoroughly checked for diabetes as well.
As other(s) have mentioned, you will have to change your mindset, your attitude, and your habits.
I have & diabetes & hypertension (controlled w/meds), and am 2+ years out from thyroid cancer treatment. I got rid of the high cholesterol problem and gained blood glucose control with changes in my diet & exercise habits. Also lost 1/3 of what my body weight was at diabetes diagnosis.

Jerry some people do have food sensitivities particularly to seafood.
Lobster and shrimp are toxic for my DIL. Personally I'd choose sunflower or safflower oil over canola which may begenticlly modified.

Jerry Avins j...@ieee.org

About sensitivities, sure. We all need to watch out for our own peculiarities. Sometimes it isn't obvious. By daughter is somewhat sensitive to wheat -- it causes congestion, but never realized it until her baby daughter's frequent ear infections were treated by a perceptive pediatrician with a wheat-free diet she also ate.
As for the oils, canola -- rapeseed oil by another name -- has a higher smoke point. Safflower is OK for frying eggs, but a bit touchy for some other foods. Sometimes, I use grape seed oil too, and peanut. (Peanut oil is great for stir fries.) If you want to avoid genetically-engineered crops, don't use corn oil. At one time, most of the corn oil on the market was contaminated with sprayed pesticides, according to my pediatrician sister, and I haven't bought any of it since. I don't know what's in it now, Jerry

Kate Dicey k...@diceyhome.free-online.co.uk

Hi there Betty!  I'm entering this from alt.cooking-chat.  I'll intersperse my comments for you: Oh, I do, I do!  I took a look at myself a year ago in a dress I made for a friends wedding, and said: You look like a pregnant heffalump!
Lose it!  I joined Weight Watchers that autumn, and it has helped a great deal.  The best thing about it is the support of others in the same situation.  I became more active by walking: I walk up to the village school every day to collect my son, a mile each way.  Weather has to be REEEEELLY nasty for us to accept a lift!  :D  I'm lucky that I have grown to love the walk and see the changing seasons.  I'm sure this is helped by my Garden Of England rural setting (I live on the top of the North Downs in Kent, UK, opposite a cherry orchard, on the edge of a designated 'area of outstanding natural beauty'!
The trick is to find some exercise you don't absolutely hate and do a bit each day.  As you get fitter and slimmer, you will like it more.
I used to hate to plan meals, but I do love cooking.  Now, with the new regime, I plan a week or two's meals at a time, write them down, and we shop for those meals.  I have found that we waste far less food through turning the vegetable basket into a veggie grave yard and compost heap!
Our diet was ok, because the DH is a type 1 diabetic (insulin dependant), but portions were waaaaay off!  I was eating far too much, so I started by weighing all my portions.  Now I weigh occasionally to make sure I don't stray.
One of the big problems with convenience food is that they are often loaded with fats, sugars, or salt, and sometimes all three!  While they can taste great, they do our blood pressure and arteries no good at all.  Low fat/sugar/salt versions tend to be unsatisfactory and bland by comparison, though there are some good ones about.
I have found that there are LOADS of low fat/salt things I can do that are really quick and very tasty.  I'm lucky that we all like fish, and when the lads want steak, I have a lean pork loin steak or a chicken breast instead.
I recently ended up in hospital for a week with gall bladder disease -
very inflamed and infected gall bladder, on drips for antibiotics and pain control!  AKK!  I have been even more careful about the diet since starting to eat again.
I would suggest that you get the medical problems under control and see a dietician: they can help you sort out a good mixed diet plan that will help you to ensure you get all the right nutrition without the things you need to avoid or really hate eating.
The WW diet plan allows you to eat what you like - everything has a point value and you get so many points per day, according to your starting weight.  They encourage healthy eating (including the 5 portions of fruit and veg per day, milk for calcium, good protein, and the occasional treat).  Any good diet plan will help you do this too.
They also give you suggested menus, both carnivorous and veggie types.
I found them a great help at the beginning.  I use them less now as I have got used to my plan and shop regime.
I'm not trying to sell anyone the WW plan - I'm just using it as an example that I know works.
I have not actually tried this one, but it sounds like all the others: a good idea, but you are on it for life!  The good ones aim to re-educate your eating habits and retrain you into a healthier life style.
Since I started, I've lost 25.5 lbs.  Sometimes it has been hard, but it is worth it in the long run.  I have another 42 lbs to lose to reach my goal weight.  Things that have got better include: My skin!  Looks fresher and younger - better nutrition!
My food bills: less than they were and we eat better!
My feet and ankles:  They no longer swell anything like so much in the heat, or without provocation!
My fibromyalgia: hips and knees are better as they are carrying less weight!  Yes, even the 25.5 lbs has made a difference I can feel.  I'm not pain free all the time, but I am better than I was.
Best of luck with whichever regime you decide to follow.

Hi Betty, I haven't read all the responses yet but I just wanted to chime in with my diet success.  I eat primarily raw fruit and salads.  It's been fantastic.
By avoiding all processed foods, I no longer have to worry about soy being in my food.  Plus, when it comes time for a quick snack, nothing is faster than peeling a banana and then throwing the peel away.  I've lost 47 pounds and have also cleared up many other health ailments that doctors told me had no cure.
I wish you success on your diet choice.  :) ar ...

Betty, I'm really impressed with your raw food diet and have heard lectures and read some books about it. It was first called to my attention by awoman who started the diet to deal with pancreatic cancer.

i

Carol Frilegh c...@sympatico.ca

Yes. Ellie ran an Internet group on detoxing anger with a technique she developed and was promoting for use in prisons. . She never got into the food thing until near the end and never told the group about the cancer how sick she was. When she vanished from the group one of the members tracked her down at a N.Y. Hospital . She was released and died at home only days later. her work was not carried in via the group after that. In addition to the Raw Food Diet she advocated weaning oneself off of thyroid medication to allow the gland to restore itself.
I never dared trying that. Since the pancreas is singular not a pair lijke lungs or kidney's it was fatal.

Thank you for giving me some credit for having a little brain function.
Very few people here have done that.
You are correct I have been diagnosed, I had part of my thyroid removed along with having an autoimmune disease.  I already take Armour Thyroid for those thinking I was so stupid as to claim my weight gain is caused by my thyroid.  In case my original message was not read I stated  "I also have a thyroid problem and even though I do not feel I can blame my weight gain on this condition, I do feel it makes it harder to lose weight. "  There are many problems for those of us with Thyroid conditions and many people are not educated enough about their own problem to know all of them.  High blood pressure and high cholesterol are just a couple of the additional problems related to this disease.
Again I want to thank you for giving me some credit.    Betty

After reading all of the replies, I do have a reply.
I would love to know why it is ***umed I am fat.  My weight when I got married was 89 pounds and I think anything over 120 pounds is fat.  When I had my only child I weighed in at 111.5 pounds.  I simply ask if any one had heard of the E-Diet plan and I got so many insults that I am overwhelmed.  I also have been on the breast cancer newsgroup and thyroid newgroup and they both are kind, helpful and in general I found them to be really nice and tactful.
I only gave some of my background in order show some of the reasons I am in my position of weighing more than I would like to.  I also admitted my own shortcoming and I am more than willing to admit they are the major reasons for my situation.

Don't let people get you all flustered and discombobulated :)  - and BTW, thyroid dysfunction CAN be disctinctly related to changes in your body weight - either significant gain or significant loss, depending on your particular thyroid problem or disease.  Search for Graves disease and Hashimoto's as well as just "thyroid" at Medline (National Institute of Health, free)

Hi Betty, I think that many of us hypos will have difficulty losing weight even though many of us don't.  I do have an example of this.  As you know, I eat a diet primarily made up of raw foods.  When the majority of people go raw, they lose about 20 - 40 pounds in the first month.  However, it has taken me over a year to lose 47 pounds.  The other hypos who eat raw have the same problem.  I'm glad that my weight loss was slow and healthy, but....gee...sometimes I wish it would just melt off like everyone else's weight.  :) So, anyway, losing weight - be it 100 pounds or 5 pounds may be very difficult for hypos.
