Penn Adult Developmental Disorders: Treatment Programs ADHD is primarily a neurobiological disorder that is strongly hereditary. It is a developmental disorder affecting the prefrontal cortex of the brain, which controls “executive functions” – cognitive abilities that allow us to control and orchestrate thoughts and actions. In persons with ADHD, this area of the brain operates less efficiently than it could. Environmental factors (e.g., parenting, diet) have only a minimal association with the development of ADHD.
The Penn ADHD Treatment & Research Program was founded in 1999 with a commitment to excellence in both research and clinical service. We specialize in assessing and treating older adolescents and adults (generally age 16 and older) who have difficulties related to ADHD. The program offers assessment and diagnosis, consultation and recommendations, specialized treatment, and access to clinical research protocols. Anthony L. Columbia University Medical Center Columbia University Medical Center researchers are investigating whether these most common symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) could be causing people to smoke. If that is the case, will treatment for ADHD combined with the standard treatment to help people quit smoking – the patch with counseling – increase the quit rates for smokers trying to quit?
Participants in the study will receive the nicotine patch, behavioral counseling, and a drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of ADHD called methylphenidate (brand name CONCERTA ® ). Because methylphenidate and nicotine act on the brain in a similar way, the premise is that treatment with methylphenidate when trying to quit smoking may reduce symptoms of ADHD while also reducing tobacco withdrawal symptoms. These benefits together may lead to increased success in quitting.

Getting organized is serious business for students with attention It's back to school soon for one creative, quick and highly verbal 10-year-old. The trouble is, he rarely gets A's on his report cards. His parents and teachers are frustrated that such a bright kid is so sloppy, careless and irresponsible. Wide disparity exists in sentences for leaving kids to die in hot cars Judges often attempt to craft creative penalties: An Idaho mother was ordered to make a video about her case to be used in birthing classes. In addition to spending eight months in prison, a Louisiana baby sitter was ordered to pay the dead girl's funeral expenses and to make a $500 annual donation to the hospital that treated her. Some day-care workers have been prohibited from supervising young children during their probation.
Or that during the next seven hours, he was accosted by an air conditioning repairman with news that he was going to have to spend several thousand dollars on a new unit? That he fixed lunch, did laundry, mended a gap in the fence that the little ones were using to escape the yard, drove to the store for parts to fix his air conditioner, took a son to soccer practice and fixed a leaking drain pipe in the basement?

Aspergers Syndrome Asperger syndrome (also referred to as Asperger's syndrome , Asperger's disorder , Aspergers , or AS ) is a condition on the autistic spectrum . Like other autistic spectrum disorders, Asperger's includes "restrictive, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, and activities." However, Asperger's differs from 'classic' autism in that there is no significant delay in non-social aspects of intellectual development. [1] AS can have both positive and negative effects on an individual's life. [2] [3] [4] [5]
There is significant debate over the difference between AS and high-functioning autism (HFA). [14] [15] While HFA has no standardized definition, and AS has several distinct definitions, [16] [17] diagnosticians often distinguish the two according to speech development. [18] [19] Delayed speech indicates HFA; normal onset of speech indicates Asperger's. [1] However, objective tests have yet to demonstrate the validity of this position, [14] [18] [19] and at least one diagnostic guide takes the position that delayed speech may be a sign of AS. [20]
