I'd like to hear about experiences from anyone who has sent a child (especially a boy)to boarding school for senior high school. I've read a few books and am familiar with Peterson's guide, but I'm interested in individual experiences (rather than general comments on topics like How to Choose a School). Carroll

I was wondering, just how prevelent is boarding school education in the UK? They exist in the U.S. but they are very rare. Most prep schools in the states are day schools. They seem to be much more common in the UK. I can't imagine being packed off to boarding school (even Hogwarts) at the age of 11. I cried my eyes out when I went to camp at that age! I was horribly homesick. For Harry, it doesnt matter much. He never felt at home when he WAS "at home". Ron has 3 brothers and a sister ...

Scholars free to choose There are plenty of options when it comes to educating your child in the Lower Hudson Valley. Some will have you pulling out your checkbook more often than others. BOARDING SCHOOLS EXPLAINED Traditionally, a boarding school is a private academic institution where students, faculty and staff live, learn and communicate on a personal level. Schools designed to help troubled teens are extremely structured, motivational and provide life changing lessons and experiences to help the students change bad habits or possibly prevent them altogether. Students are prepared for college and future life situations. Boarding schools for troubled teens offer an ideal, structured community in which students can exercise creativity, learn personal responsibility and often excel academically.
Teens at Risk Can Detour to Troubled Teen Boarding Schools Teens at risk typically do not wake up one morning and rob their neighbor. There is a long road a troubled teen must travel before their life degenerates into that of a thief, or worse, a murderer. But it is a road usually fueled by addiction and addiction usually starts innocently enough. A joint here, a small dime bag there, troubles at home, troubles at school - for emotionally immature teens, all of these factors can rapidly snowball to stimulate more drug use, robberies to support the drug abuse, and the beat goes on, we all know this ...

FROM THE STUDENT: The Boarding School Experience Boys (and their parents) seem to be ready for boarding school by their grade 9 year. They look for schools where sports are an important, and regular, part of the daily activities. School surveys suggest that the ideal candidate (male and female) for a boarding school experience is a child who likes to be active, would like to improve their social and academic skills, and has the self-confidence to live away from home for an extended period of time.
Being Canadian, and having ties to Canada, is cited by many expat families as a good reason to consider a Canadian boarding school experience. Often families have relatives and/or close friends who still live in Canada, or a family home or cottage near the chosen school. Expat parents find reassurance in the idea that their child will have stable and consistent school environment during the high school years regardless of a change in family posting (or location) during the critical teenage years.
