I've just been reading a children's book I would never have discovered but by chance (a recommendation from my brother for a suitable present for one of his sons). After the cloyness of Harry Potter, this comes as a breath of fresh air. Or perhaps cold, dank air from a place where one might accidentally step on a dead toad, for as the author warns at the very beginning, "if you wish to avoid an unpleasant story you had best put this book down." It is "The Miserable Mill", the ...

Lemony Snicket I have heard the educating masses calling for EVERYTHING. So despite the fact that I prefer to leave puzzles for folks to solve or connections to see themselves, I'll start the (long, tedious) process of putting ALL the references up here (minus the ones that would get me blocked by under-selective and over-active filters, which should be obvious to anybody about to write me a missive about certain Vladimir Nabokov novels, ancient Greek poetesses , or early Brooke Shields movies with characters named Violet).
Baudelaire : After Charles Baudelaire , French flaneur , author, critic, poet of Les fleurs du mal ( The Flowers of Evil ), arguably the most influential book of poems in the Nineteenth Century. (Try imagining an influential book of poetry in the twenty-first century.) Reading this stuff will impress your Goth girlfriend or boyfriend. Baudelaire was actually the man who also translated Edgar Allan Poe into French.
Boot Camp Boot Camp Monday, July 10, 2006 Day 1 The Health Club to which I belong offered a Summer Boot Camp on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for 9 weeks. Since they also cancelled the Monday morning aerobics class which I usually attend, I decided to try the Boot Camp. I was chicken to try it on the first Monday, so I worked out on the elliptical machine and peered out the window to see what kind of people were in Boot Camp. I decided that they didn't all look like hard-bodies, so I might be able to keep up. Wednesday, July 12, 2006 Day 2 Wednesday, I got there ...
A Series of Unfortunate Events #1: The Bad Beginning: by Lemony It's also fortunate that her brother, Klaus, has read lots of books and knows many important things, like how to tell an alligator from a crocodile and who killed Julius Caesar. When everything that can possibly go wrong does, a small fact can be vital. It's lucky, too, that Sunny Baudelaire, the youngest sibling, likes to bite things. Even though she is an infant, and scarcely larger than a boot, she has four very big and sharp teeth. When trouble comes along, sharp teeth can save the day. ...

How a Pentecostal kid went to a Wesleyan Church and became a Walking with my Father-in-law this morning, we began talking about God’s will, His plan, and our 20-20 hindsight when we are looking backwards. So, even though I’ve told this story in pieces many times to various people, I will try to unfold the “life-changing” events in my life to show God’s hand through specific acts of my will. Some events may be skipped over, but I will attempt to recall the major turning points that have brought me thus far. Perhaps the first defining point I can identify would ...
A series of unfortunate events. The new Jim Carre A series of unfortunate events. The new Jim Carrey movie? Or tag line for my life? The film incidently wasn't half bad. I took my sister to see it last week for her birthday and was surprised how cute it was. My life on the other hand, while not being bad exactly, has had well...a series of unfortunate events. Sarah never did write me a monolouge, nor did Jeremy help with my song. The biggest audition of my life is now less than two weeks away and I am horribly unprepared (not that i blame them, its totally my own fault.) Things at work have been really stressful. Much ...
