Just saw the first episode of VH-1's "Celebrity Fit Club 3" (it's an obese team weight-loss competition like NBC's "The Biggest Loser," except that the contestants are low-level celebrities.) It was pretty good for the admittedly cheesy type of program it is.
This season, the obese contestants include actor Jeff Conaway ("Taxi") actresses Tempestt Bledsoe ("The Cosby Show") and Countess Vaughn, hip-hop artist Young MC* and second-generation pseudocelebrity Chastity Bono.
The biggest name star a on the teams is actress/model Kelly LeBrock.
LeBrock, the star of "The Woman in Red" and "Weird Science" was the mid-1980s model of outrageously sexy, aerobically toned perfection. Once married to Steven Seagal, she was the model of a hair-care ad in which she pouted at the camera and said in a London-accented purr "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful!" So of course, she was the one millions of American women prayed would get fat.
LeBrock is an answered prayer, all right, at about 175 pounds on her 5 foot, 8 inch supermodel's frame.
I'm not laughing at LeBrock because of her weigh gain. I can sympathize.
It's the reason she gave that has me sneering. The show has three hosts: a medical doctor who supervises the dieting, a psychiatrist and an over-the-top military drill instructor to supervise exercise. LeBrock told the shrink she thinks she gained weight because shw couldn't handle being everybody's sex fantasy, and if she made herself undesirable, people would leave her alone.
Hey, she dropped out of movies for years at a time and went to live on a ranch in the middle of nowhere. In addition, she gave birth to three children, which for most women is an acceptable excuse for not having the figure she had 20 years ago.
Chastity Bono, the daughter of Sonny and Cher, blames her weight gain on the tabloids that publicly outed her lesbianism. She also blames being outed for ending her career as a rock star -- which I wasn't aware she ever had.
* just noticed that of the eight contestants, fully half of them are black.
Are black people really that much overrepresented among the obese?

Um...no, the biggest 'star' is Bledsoe or Conaway. Kelly LeBrock is an almost non-entity.
Well, no, she blamed the weight gain on years of drug abuse. She is one of only a couple of people on this season's show that is actually really 'fat'.
That was funny, if not a bit delusional on her part.
I think that the demographics for the show probably help that...VH1, like MTV, has a higher black audience rate.
