I have just had a phone call from ADT security systems telling me that i have won one of their security systems because I helped with a survey a few weeks back. They told me that there was only 50 winners in the whole of the uk, and that all I would have to pay is ??99 for the installation.
Has anyone else had experience of this, and is there any catch. Do I have to pay for the monitoring, and how much is it?. are there any other expenses?.
Any response to this would be gratefully appreciated as someone is calling around tomorrow to discuss the system, and I would like to know as much as possible beforehand.
Thanks

Iain, Do you folks still have free lunches over there? (I'm from the U.S.) the answer to this question is the answer to your question.
"Ain't no such a thang as a free lunch!" Someone always pays, in these cases it is you- the customer.

I'm sure what you are dealing with is ADT authorized dealer. I personally would not recommend going with an agents service, asd here in the US it tends to be less than standard.
The free system is merely a hoax to try to get you to go with them. I, too, give away alarm systems as long as the customer will sign a monitoring agreement, usually a 24 or 36 mth one.

We once had a guy working for us that previously worked for a trunk slammer. He told a story about putting a jar out at a home show to register for a "free" alarm system. Since ALL their systems were installed free, they called everyone in the jar. Of course, monitoring was required (and it wasn't free...) This may be what has come about for you. -Rick On Mon, 19 Feb 2001 22:39:11 -0000, "Iain"

We do that, too. As Mark put it, just another way to get a contract.

It WOULD be a scam if they think your just giving them a panel and here you come with a contract but if properly worded ....
I'm seeing less and less of this these days, no idea why ...

We do the same thing over here. It's not a hoax though you pay 35.00 a month for 48 months to cover the cost of your system after that it is only 19.99 ;) We sure do "give away " alot of them too.

Here in the US it is illegal to charge a fee for something described as WON.

ADT did/does the same thing here in Florida. They tell you that you "Won" the security system, but unless you pay to have it installed and pay monthly service fees it doesn't do you any good.

Yeah. I know just what you mean. Its just like my house. I won my house from the bank. All I have to do is make 360 very large monthly payments. Next week I think I may win a new car. The Dodge dealer said all I have to do is aggree to make 60 monthly payments. America, what a great country!

"Shea Carter" as...@bellsouth.net
Well ours is really free up front, we do not tell them that they have won anything..we just tell them that they can have the system free of installation if they keep the monitoring through us for 4 years..Works out pretty well for us....

WON.
If that is so I doubt you would see these sales practices done

No...it isn't.

I was giving this some consideration. The test for a fraud is "you were or are being tricked" into doing something for someone else's gain. If you tell somebody they won something then made an attachment or condition to it, I would think you were tricked. If you tell someone that by signing up for a 36 month contract you will "give" them the equipment for doing so would not be "tricking anyone". It boils down to sliming selling practices IMO, something that I hope an ethical person would not do.
I think in most jurisdictions fraud would be considered criminal behaviour but not everybody uses the same measuring stick.

It is, Using the word WON in a sales pitch implies a contest. This also applies to drop box tickets. By law if you have WON something there can be no fees attached to the prize or other obligations required to receive the prize. You can say that the person has been chosen to receive something or entitled to a free offer and this does not imply a contest. Now I may be incorrect as to say this is the law in the US but I have corresponded with the Attorney's General of CT, NY, NJ, RI, MA, OH and it would be a violation of law in those states. Also any FA dealers, this is against FA policy. If you are using the word WON in the states I have mentioned and are charging any fees ***ociated with system then you can be prosecuted and have civil action brought by the customer. Tom/Freesback/Milford Alarm can attest to this post as he also knows about the situations above.

Just because it illegal does not mean it is not done, they would not have to have the law.

Hmm, interesting that, because ADT called around as arranged and proceeded in telling me about all what I had WON. they continued to tell me how the monitoring service worked and how good their system is. They kept asking if I had any questions, and I kept saying "not yet" (I wanted to see if they brought up anything about monitoring costs themselves). When they had finished, and there was no mention of costs at all, so I asked about the cost to myself. they told me about the ??99 installation fee, but only AFTER I asked did they mention the ??25 a month that they expected me to pay for monitoring. When I asked about using the system without monitoring they told me it wasnt possible. So therefore, this alarm system that I had "won" was going to cost me ??25/month or I wasn't going to get it!!!. (incidently the alarm system was meant to be worth ??899 for 1 control panel, 1 door sensor, 1 bell box and 2 pir sensors, at least thats what they kept telling me).
When I told them that I would have to think about it, they told me that if it was up to them, they would let me have as much time as i wanted, but their boss needed to know straight away (bit of pressure there). I told them I wouldnt be pressurized into making such a decision, and if they needed an answer straight away that it would be no. they then gave me a couple of days, saying they didnt know if it would still be available by then.
Only after they left and I had a chance to look at the paperwork did I find out that the whole thing was subject to a minimum contract agreement of 36 months. ??900, I think NOT (at least not for something I''ve "won")!!!
I appreciate everybodies comments on this, and would be interested in any other comments anyone has to make on this matter.

Cliff, What makes your "free" probably Ademco V10 "independant dealer istalled system" any better than the "free" Ademco or similar "independant ADT dealer installed system" with the the same 22ga wire and GRI contacts conectected to a phone line. I don't get it? A Chevy is a Chevy man.
