INDIO, Calif. (Reuters) - Actor Robert Downey Jr. is doing well in a live-in drug rehabilitation program and thanked a judge on Thursday for allowing him to continue his bid to beat his addiction.
Downey, 36, was sentenced in July to a year in a drug treatment center after pleading no contest to drug charges in a deal with prosecutors that spared him a return to prison.
Appearing back in court for a progress report on Thursday, he told Riverside County Judge Randall White that recovery ``is really my primary focus now and so with some humility I'd like to let the court know I appreciate your allowing me to continue.'' Deputy District Attorney Tamara Capone told reporters outside court that all drug tests on Downey had been negative.
Downey has struggled for years to beat addiction to cocaine and was arrested last Thanksgiving for cocaine possession less than four months after spending a year in state prison on earlier drug charges.
His current sentence allows him to work under supervision on occasion outside the treatment program, and he was last seen lip-syncing a music video for Elton John's latest single ``I Want Love.'' It's feasible. The average heroin addict has four relapses before he or she gets and stays clean for good. With an average of four, you are going to have some who get it right the first time, and others who get it right on time twenty. Maybe it was prison, and the fear of more prison, maybe it was getting fired by the Ally McBeal producer (this is the only professional rejection the guy has actually received) - regardless, it is very possible.
Of course, once the court ordered drug tests stop, I wouldn't give him 30 days.

k***a >> Well he has been seen in pictures all over LA, Philly and NYC, he seems to be handling OUTSIDE of this drug rehab center...so far. Its always one day at a time for an addict, sometimes in the *excitement of being clean, they forget that, so when he has as someone mentioned said he is clean for good, he really might think so, right up until the moment he slips.

I think Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) went into rehab 19 times before he got clean. From my days working in rehabs I wouldn't be surprised if the average was higher than 4 times.

I think the average was derived from a study of success stories. They didn't include the dead junkies in the equation.
