Hello. My Nan has been in a NHS Trust mental health unit for three weeks because she was depressed, and they wanted to try her on memory tablets. Everything was going swimmingly, there had been a meeting and it was decided she could go home, with an increased care package from social services. She was supposed to come home in a couple of weeks. Night before last, we had a call from Accident and Emergency. My Nan had dislocated her shoulder, and could we come down. We went, and they said that the ...

Hi all, Yesterday one of the administrators of our local "primary care team" informed my parents that they wanted to send my brother into residential care, and that this will take place in a couple of weeks time. She did try to sugar things a bit to try and get my parents agreement. However they have (understandably) refused and it looks like John will be "forced" into going. This sudden announcement has all been rather a shock as you might imagine and I do not know what to d ...

Children's Home Society of Florida: Group Residential Care In some ways CHS group homes are no different than that of any family. They are lively households with CHS house parents and staff who make the children feel safe and at home, perhaps for the first time in their lives. CHS team members weave the details of home life -- school drop-offs, movie outings, sports, after-school activities -- into a busy daily schedule. But they never lose sight of their bigger, tougher job: helping the children in the care find the best within themselves. They listen to their ...
Some children just stay for a few weeks or months until it's safe for them to return to their families, live with relatives, or join a foster or adoptive family. Others may "grow up" with CHS. These youth are given support, training and love as caring staff prepare them to transition into adulthood through independent living and self-sufficiency programs.

Senate holds 2nd hearing on DCYF Peter and Tina Sleicher had opened their home a few weeks earlier to a troubled boy in the custody of the Department of Children, Youth and Families. The Sleichers had been temporary foster parents for about four years. Even with two young boys of their own, the Warwick family felt an obligation to help troubled youth. One Monday the family met with a DCYF representative to talk about the foster child’s history. Nothing came up about sexual abuse. Five days later, Tina Sleicher caught the foster child molesting their ...

Missouri sprinkler mandate exempts many group homes JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — After a fire killed 11 people at a Missouri group home, state officials and health care advocates called for mandatory sprinkler systems at all residential care facilities. The Missouri Legislature responded with a watered-down sprinkler mandate that still could exempt more than 60 percent of the facilities now lacking sprinklers. The legislation, passed overwhelmingly last week, excludes existing residential care and assisted living facilities with 20 or fewer residents from having to retrofit their buildings ...
Disability, Poverty and Systemic SSI-Related Discrimination In 2007, the SSI "Federal Benefit Rate" (FBR) is $623 a month. This is what the federal government mandates as the MINIMUM monthly benefit throughout the country. It's what federal taxes and revenue pay to SSI recipients. If an older American or person with a disability receives only $623 a month, they are being expected to survive on an amount of income that is only at 76% of the federal poverty level.
What is not widely known is that states may supplement the federal benefit rate with an "optional state supplement"(OSS). Some states pay a supplement to persons who live in the community, some states pay a supplement to persons who reside only in state institutions or group living situations (aka "community institutions"), e.g., assisted living facilities, personal care boarding facilities, foster care homes, domiciliary care facilities. Some states do not pay OSS regardless of where the person lives.
