No, not what you are thinking :-) I happened to catch the World Xbox FIFA Championship on the Extreme Sports channel the other night, and my thoughts were largely twofold: 1. It is interesting to note that international level videogaming competitions are getting increasing levels of medai exposure these days.
What with that Halo 2 clan getting signed for a $1,000,000 dollar contract a couple of months ago by the IGL (?) and an individual within that clan, getting a further $250K contract to play as a solo player, and now FIFA championships being broadcast on the TV, the future has never seemed brighter for videogaming becoming accepted as a legitimate professional activity by the mainstream public and media.
2. Does it really qualify as an Extreme Sport, in the way that the rest of that channels content (surfing, skateboarding, bmx, MTB etc.) does ?
I would readily accept that videogaming at that level takes considerable mental stamina, reflexes and co-ordination, but.......an Extreme Sport ?
Really ?
Maybe it is. But if it is, then I think we have to start considering Darts and Snooker as "Extreme Sports" too.
Views ? Opinions ?

Ruminating about this kind of thing at that time of day shows a certain state of mind. I'd seek help if I were you.

Yep, totally gay, dude.  ;)

I've been asking many people for many years why people abseil, or what part of it can be considered extreme. I used to do a fair bit of climbing, and my experience of abseiling is it's the 30-second walk down a cliff-face that isn't in any way phsyically or mentally demanding that comes after an hour-long struggle to get up the thing.
It feels to me like two football teams turning up for match, then just having a penalty shootout and going home. So tell me, what is the point of abseiling? I could maybe understand the thrill of doing it down a 1200ft skyscraper, but not down down a 150ft cliff.

Valid point but a lot of fun can be had in the execution. For instance forward-abseiling one hundred odd feet at high speed with minimal (rock) face contact in front of a crowd of admiring females is undeniably cool.
Misjudging the spring in the rope and landing in a heap of bleeding kneecaps isn't.

I don't know, but as I have always been afraid of heights I can say that actually throwing myself off a high surface onto a huge pile of boxes when i was a lad was one of the biggest thrills I ever had, so I can sort of get the x sports thing, except they all really seem to want to die :O)
