My big problem with the Jewish summer camps was that most of them have only 3 or 4 week sessions, nothing in the one or two week range.  My daughter would love to go away for the whole summer, and probably will when she is older, as long as we can afford it.
I've only checked with 2 camps so far, one in RI and one in CT.   The one in RI had a "taster" session that was 2 weeks long (too long for this year), and the one in CT has a 1 week taster with the option of staying for the second week if the camper wishes.
If neither of those is too far for you, I will forward the contact information, privately if this is not germaine to the whole list.

it.
This isn't true, either. You evidentally haven't looked very far, but Ramah, which is in western MA has a short session.
So do the other Jewish camps in New Hampshire and the JCC camp in Maine. If you only have checked out two camps so far, you haven't really done your homework. I can't think of any Jewish camps (and I've checked out pretty much every one in the US and several in Canada) that don't have short sessions for first time campers. They ALL do. It's a standard option.
Just as a hint, since you've brought up costs, Jewish camps usually offer financial aid. In addition, your local Federation usually has camperships, and those camperships *usually* include airfare. So, if you really love a camp that is far from where you live, or you live someplace where there aren't Jewish camps, check with your federation to see if you can get a campership with airfare.

For her first year, and probably until she is bat mitzva, I don't want her further than I can drive in a couple of hours.  Ramah is 3-4 hours, ditto for NH, a couple of NY camps, and the Maine one.
Robyn gave me a lead for a camp in the Boston area, but too late for this year.
And yes, most of the camps have the one or two week sessions for first year campers, but IMHO, if I'd sent my 7 year old to camp for 1 week, the next year she would still be too young for a month away from home.  Most of the camps I spoke with offered the trial week only up to age 9 or 10.   My grumble about the cost is strictly in relationship to the cost of GS camp, vs taster week at Jewish camp.  It's more a matter of value than ability to pay.  If my dd comes back with an increased love of her religion, and grumbles less over the next year about her hebrew studies, the answer will be "Yes." Thank you for the information about the camperships.  I don't know if we'd qualify, but if she gets to her teens and sets her heart on some camp in the wilds of California or something, it'll be good to know.

If anyone does know of any Jewish camps in the northeast that offer 2-week sessions for the general population of campers I would be interested in knowing which ones do that.  My son will be attending a 2-week teaser session this summer, but after this year would have to attend a 4-week session if he wants to go back, and we're not sure that will fit into either our schedule or our budget.  (And thanks for the hint about camperships, though I'm not sure if we'd qualify.)

My daughter is going to be a junior in high school in fall. She did not attend camp for various reason this summer, but had she attended, the session would have been 4 weeks-- not 8. This is Camp Newman in northern CA. It is a reform camp, but it is a Jewish camp. No, she is not required to attend 8 weeks at all. She wants to go for 8 weeks next year as a CIT in training.

Hi from Southern California, We have been very happy with our summer and winter camp at Brandeis-Bardin.
My son started out with a one week sleep-over when he was 10 and now at almost 14, he is gone for three weeks and even then, we have to drag him away!  I know of atleast two other Jewish camps in my area, both conservative, but I've never heard of an 8 week committment.
Good luck Mirta Dreiman ...

My children attend two different Jewish camps, Ramah and Alonim. Neither require a full summer's stay. In fact, Alonim does not allow any campers to be there for more than a session (either 1, 2, or 3 weeks, depending upon the session) without a break between sessions.
Ramah does either a 2 week Gesher program for younger children, or 4 week sessions for older kids. It's easy to refute your friend. Look at the camp web sites. They ALL have them. Just search under Google for "Jewish overnight camps" and you'll probably get well over 100 hits. Look at the sessions. This is a no brainer to disprove. :-) Marjorie ...

I can tell you for sure about the camps that I know, either personally, or through others.  Camp Sternberg has a six week session first, and then a three week session.  Camp Mesorah has 2 four-week sessions, as does Camp Morasha.  None of these places mandate that you stay both sessions as a camper.  The day camps near me don't even require all 8 weeks.  (Ma-Tov, Regesh, etc.)  (Side note: All camps that I mentioned here are Orthodox camps in the NY area.) Speaking of overnight camps, my 8 YO son just returned from a month at Ramah and he is like a changed person. First, his hebrew has vastly improved (he's been in Jewish schools since the age of 2 and is pretty self sufficient in written Hebrew, but never before in oral) and he's speaking in full sentences, something I didn't quite expect. But the best thing is, he LOVED camp. I mean, I've never seen this kid so psyched about anything before. He just couldn't stop talking about how fun it was, and how much he learned, and how he can't wait to go back next summer.
Since this is a kid who has not been generally successful in school (he was homeschooled this year and will be in 6th grade next year in our local public school ) due to being profoundly gifted, something day schools are just not equipped or willing to deal with, this is the first time ever he's been overboard successful at anything. He did fine in day camp, but he never really *liked* day camp except for 3 summers at Camp Grossman, the Boston JCC camp, and even then the swimming was an issue because he can't stand swimming in a lake. Yes, he's a kvetch, but it's just how he is, very sensitive.
So, he left home for a month, told me today that it went by so quickly, and how much he hopes he can go for the whole summer next year. Not unless I win the lottery, and as they say, you gotta play to win!
Marjorie, mom to two swell campers!

My problem with the Jewish summer camps is that they require a plane trip across the country to get to. IIRC, though, the camp my son's=20 friend (10-11 year range) goes to has two 4 week sessions. At his age he only attends the first.=20 I know one child from California who attends an O Yeshiva HS in New York.
After the end of the official school year, they attend a mandatory camp for a good part of the summer, which is heavily weighted toward education. It's more a way of extending the school year, but away from the horrors (so I've heard) of a New York City summer, than it is an actual camp.

You mean you have not been able to find an Orthodox summer camp, or no camps at all in your area?   It wouldn't surprize me if a child could come away from a yeshiva summer camp as pale as they went in<g>, but the difference between the tree-shaded street in front of my house in the burbs, versus the temps in the middle of the back yard lead me to believe that even spending the summer studying in the country is better than staying in the city.   maxine in ri ============================================================================== This post reflects the author's opinion; the moderators' opinions may differ.

You should have seen my son on the first few days, after he'd somehow avoided his sun screen.  Brown is ok, but not bright red!  Anyway, it's illegal all year round to be pale in California.
That's obviously what the Eastern yeshivas think.  I don't think that there is that difference in California - actually the "City" is in the L.A. Basin which is affected by the sea breezes, while the "vallies" such as the San Fernando Valley where I live are cut off from the=20 breezes by the mountains, and are typically ten degrees warmer.  The real "countryside" like the Imperial and Central vallies are even worse.
You would have to go to the mountains for real relief.

B"H My son is just coming back today from Yeshivas HaKayitz in Skokie (He spent a week through Tisha B'Av with a friend who he met at camp-camp ended a week ago).  He was pleading with us to send him next year.  They daven, then 3 hours of learning, then fun-fun-fun, for basically the rest of the day.
Last year he went to Camp Stone in PA, and liked it.  He really liked Yeshivas HaKayitz much better.  Sure, it takes a plane ride from CA, but they pick the kids up at the other end, and most kids that age are no strangers to airplane rides.  We live in the Bay area, and my 13 year old had no problem with the ride, and his 11 year old sister had no problem flying to Cleveland to visit a friend.  Note: Yeshivas HaKayitz has only 1 1month session.

First, please only post in plain text so we don't get those weird symbols in your posts. Thanks!
Fred, I mentioned earlier in this thread that I found out that if you apply for a scholarship to a particular camp, airfare is included. The Bureau of Jewish Education in SF pays for air fare if you child has to fly. My kids both flew to LA and back for camp, which obviously isn't as expensive as from Skokie to LA, but air fares have never been lower and maybe now is the time to book a flight. :-) Jewish camping is so important that there are people out there who want to give money to ensure that every Jewish child gets a change to attend a camp. Start looking now, both for camp and for $$, and hopefully, you'll be surprised to see what you can find.

The entire Ramah camp site http://www.campramah.org/ has links to each of the various Ramah camps. Note that the one in Palmer MA does not require 8 weeks either. Nor does Ramah in the Berkshires, Atlanta Georgia, or the Poconos. Wisconsin doesn't list their calendar on their web site and I didn't check Canada.
But as far as the Ramah web sites are concerned, none require more than a month's stay.
Please try to check out the camps before making statements like this.

I don't put "weird symbols" in my posts, thank you very much!
I see the "=20"'s a lot, but not usually in my posts.
Somebody (or something) somewhere must think my lines are too long.
I'll check, but I doubt if there are any scholarships to fly to the East Coast to camp.  I don't think that BJE's or Federations are all that interested in O camps anyway.
I certainly will try.  Thanks for the tip.  (Although by next summer I will have 0 kids in college, and unless I'm supporting their transition from student to "gainfully employed" I may not need the scholarship.

Unfortunately the schedules posted on the web don't tell the whole story.  For example, Ramah in Palmer MA, with which I am very familiar, requires 8 weeks attendence once you are entering 10th grade.  4 or 8 week options exist for younger campers.  There are also some mini-sessions and/or encampments.  The options have been changing each year as they are tinkering with the program, but the shorter sessions are generally oriented towards first-time campers.

But that's NOT what the OP claimed. She said that you can go for a short time *the first year* and then afterwards you're required to go for the whole summer. IOW, my son went at 8 for a month. He's going into 6th grade, but Ramah has him in with 5th graders, a year ahead of his age peers. He WILL NOT have to go for the entire summer for 5 more years. That was my point, and I was correct. :-) Marjorie ============================================================================== This post reflects the author's opinion; the moderators' opinions may differ.
