A youth haven for 40 years to get a new home of its ownA youth haven for 40 years to get a new home of its own Last week YES razed its headquarters in Bellevue's Crossroads Park. When the new 20,000-square-foot building is completed in fall 2008, it will be more than twice the size of the old one. A $10.7 million fundraising campaign is under way to cover the construction costs and relocate and expand satellite offices. The money will also go toward increasing services to clients over the next 10 years, said Mel Baer, campaign director.

Many of those teens were dealing with drug and alcohol abuse, problems at home and family dynamics. Now the list of issues clients deal with includes dating violence, teen gambling and eating disorders. "We weren't dealing with sexual predators who are able to connect with kids on the Internet," Skelton-McGougan said. "Technology has been a great thing, but it has brought concerns."

Children39s Home and Youth Farm to mergeChildren's Home and Youth Farm to merge Children's Home and Youth Farm - with a combined 200 years of credibility and service to young people in central Illinois - have agreed to merge. Now they just need to figure out all the legal stuff. "We complement each other. Both organizations are very excited about the possibilities this merger would bring," said Arlene Happach, president and CEO of Children's Home. "We are definitely operating under the belief that one plus one equals three." Children's Home, established in 1866, offers residential, educational and behavioral services for troubled children ...

Annual Camp Watsitumi Benefits Local YouthAnnual Camp Watsitumi Benefits Local Youth Valadez said that some things you tend to hear the first few days of camp are words of fear concerning the challenges. Eventually, she said the children start to think more positively and learn to work together as a team. By the time they leave camp, the fears have turned into pride of achieving their goals and a greater self-esteem.

Perils in treating children as peersPerils in treating children as peers A horrendous national shortage gripped America in the 1970s. The forces of progress rallied the American people in a spirit of shared purpose. The leader of this movement donned a sweater and went on TV to lift the nation from its malaise. Jimmy Carter and the energy crisis? Feh. That was nothing compared to the more acute scarcity that plagued America in those dark days. I'm referring, of course, to the 1970s self-esteem famine, during which cardigan-sporting Fred Rogers heroically served as a Jimmy Carter for the preschool set. These investments in self-esteem ...

It seems to be a distinctly American problem. Immigrant kids are less likely, for instance, to see good grades and high compliments as a birthright. Don Chance, a finance professor at Louisiana State University, recently told The Wall Street Journal that Asian-born students don't argue about every bad grade. They respond to such esteem-deflating feedback by working harder. I suspect that Ms. Twenge and Mr. Chance are largely right, but the hand-wringing about youth's sense of entitlement can go overboard. Volunteerism is on the rise, not something you would necessarily expect even after ...
