A lot of you probably have at least as many boardgames as I do (quite recently, it became a three digit number). After two days of googling I still havn't found any kind of program that would allow me to catalog my boardgames and optionally keep track of gamesessions. I've tried gametracker but this program is quite old and should be rewritten for newer computers.
So my question here is what do you use to keep track of what you have ? Do you keep a pen and paper list, have you created an access or filemaker database yourself or do you know all of it by heart ? How do you keep track of your 5 and 10's list ?
Cheers Simkin

Well you could sign up to www.boardgamegeek.com and use their catalogue system. I also started writing a (very simple) database system in PHP and MySQL to keep track of my consoles mainly, and which of my friends had borrowed what, but I had intentions of including my boardgames.
Unfortunatley time hasn't allowed that to go further than a database definition with no web interface - so not at all useful to anyone; including myself :-( If one already exists then please do tell, I have no reason to reinvent the wheel.

I just keep my game list set up as a database in Excel. The functionality is crude, but sufficient for my needs.

I just use and excel spreadsheet for games. I used to use an excel sheet to track sessions, who I played with and ratings but gave up that years ago.

I have a program for keeping track of your games played, but it doesn't currently have a database of the games you own. I'd suggest using the Geek for that. If you are interested in my program, go to: < http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WindopaeneSpielSystems/ >, and join up, and you can download the program.

With about 600 games, I needed to create a filemaker database, which is also searchable (i.e., if I have 5 players who want to play a game of 3 hours or less that is NOT a cardgame, I can enter the data and it will spit out all the games I own that meet the criteria).
I also do have an Excel spreadsheet which tracks my gaming group's efforts (then again, we are in our inaugural year of keeping 'score' and are looking to actually purchase and award plaques next year). The sheet awards points for wins; determines the percentage above/below average each player plays; and determines the domination of the player (how much of the table's points they score ONLY in their wins).
Of course, then again, I also created a database to track every CCG card I own (not just the games; actually every single card, and the quantity)...

I've made an access database for these sorts of things, as this is the type of thing that access is for. I use it to keep track of games played at EPGS (I post the listings here sometimes).
I also made one especially suited to keep track of my own game collection, including every type of game: board, pc, video, etc. It would be really useful if I wasn't too lazy to do the data entry for it. I could query the data in all sorts of ways if I had any data.

Could you possibly email me an empty copy of that excel sheet ? I've been making my own using a chess alike scoring system but what bugs me is that it shifts too rapidly.. ie one can be dead last and behind a week ago only to be in the lead five or six games later..I don't like my ratings to represent a lucky night or so. if you'd allow me, I'd like to take a look at the system you have devised ? What do you need that http://www.boardgamegeek.com doesn't offer: 1 - Database of nearly every game out there 2 - Easy way of adding recent sessions. It would be nice to be able to add earlier ones 3 - Easy way of cataloging all your games, including condition What else is it you want to do?

Have control over when you can access your data and whether it disappears or not...
Certainly BGG offers a great service, but if you are using it as your sole database then you are subject to their crashes, backups, modifications, disappearance (not that this appears to be a problem), etc.
It would be interesting if someone could put together a "BGG ***istant" program that would interface with the website and maintain a backup of your game data on your own PC.

Interesting question that I started looking at a few months ago (and must revisit). I decided I did want a formal database to both catalog my games and also to start recording gaming sessions. I also wanted to be able to publish my games to a website.
My first step was to dowload Aaron Feugi's complete Internet 100 Games list - despite it's name this list has over 4000 games. Initially I used the database program Alpha Five. This is an excellent d/b program and a slightly back-level version was given away free on a UK mag cover CD last year. This allowed me to import an initial master games database table from Aaron's list to which I added another column Owned - so all I had to do was go through and tick those games I actually owned, then add the games that I own that weren't on the 100 list. Now I had a database table listing over 4000 games with a depressingly small subset of those I actually owned. I added other fields such as Purchase Date/ Place/ Price and started filling some in as I went.
I decided it would be easier to move to MySql for web publishing so repeated the exercise - IIRC the MSql import wasn't as seamless as Alpha Five so I had to hack a little Python to make a comma separated list out of Aaron's games list. I then started to build a much more complex relational d/b adding tables for players, sessions etc.
Anyway the point of this - get a decent d/b program - Alpha Five is pretty functional and relatively inexpensive (in my case free!). Aaron's list is a great resource and importing it was trivial and saved days of typing.
I did email Boardgame geek and ask if here was a list of game number v game name available so that I could add one other field to my games database table - a direct hypertext link into the relevant geek page.
Sadly I never got a reply.

Curious, sometimes it is down, but when it is up it works fine for me, a little slow but most pages display within 5 seconds or so. Given that hosting this vast database is a voluntary effort I think that is incredible.
Tom
The Doctor D...@freemail.nl
It is incredible, and though it's slow, I appreciate it very much.
I just can't imagine wanting to hang around long enough to enter all my own games into it, nor game sessions.
Entering them would take longer then the game sessions.
Maybe some localized client can be built that just sends diffs to the geek.

I asked them something like that as well, so that I could link AREA to them. There ar id numbers on the links, but it isn't clear that they can be considered permanent.
What I ended up doing was constructing a search URL that sort of worked.

Well - in my case, I have two things: the database (which is just a 'holding' facility to list games) and the spreadsheet, which tracks scores, etc. for a gaming group -- you CAN download that (albeit, with information in it, that you'd need to delete) from my website: http://rtdstrat.tripod.com -- follow links to "LIBO", and eventually, one of the pages (maybe Standings (?)) you'll find a download for the spreadsheet. Just be careful when erasing that you don't erase formulas
- just data...
