Well, my time has finally come. Tomorrow is my final day of employment with the company I've been at for the past 10 years. We've grown this from a baby with minimal revenues, 40 employees and a hope and dream to become one of the top bio-pharmaceutical companies in the world today - revenues over $300 million, over 1,000 employees and a market capitlization over $14 billion. It's been a fun ride, but alas, my time here is over and I'm stepping aside.
Not sure what the future will bring - I'm involved in another start-up project that will occupy some of my time. I guess it's all good - spring weather has finally arrived and boating & fishing season is just around the corner. My wife's a bit concerned about having me be around a lot more -
but she'll get used to it. I'm also going to take this opportunity to improve my physical health - starting by walking more and riding my bike -
hoping to drop some weight. I'll definately have more time to enjoy cigars - glad I've stocked up. It will also give me the chance to spend more time with my kids - they grow up way too fast. I'm heading down to the Florida Keys next week to do some fishing with my 17 y/o son.
It's going to feel very strange not having an office to go to or to have "work" responsibilities. I don't like to refer to it as "retirement", as that seems to have negative connations to me - I'm only 49. I'm looking at this as semi-retired & looking for interesting opportunities. But for now, I'm taking the spring and summer off, at least once I'm done working off the honey-do list.
Was actually thinking about heading down to Mexico for a few weeks and going on a bender - but I have time to decide. Wife's not too thrilled with the idea. Anyone wanna join me?
Anyway, tomorrow night I'm going to dig deep into the coolerdor and pull out one of my finest - time to celebrate the next phase of my life.
Wish me luck!!
Sandy K.

Good luck! I've been at a biotech company for a LONG time, and am curious for which company you worked. If appropriate and comfortable send me a private email.

g and summer off, at least once I'm done working off the Congratulations, I keep missing my retirement dates and the spectre of fifty keeps approaching relentlessly. I have to go down to San Miguel de Allende for a bit quite soon. It is up in the mountains and an artist colony for a lot of ex-pats. It is not exactly the type of place that a wife would be happy with, except for th hot springs and spas, as there are a lot of sex-starved gringas on the hunt.

Sandy, Private email bounced, but here is what I sent in the message: "Please ignore my post asking you to divulge the company for which you worked. After posting I realized it was an inappropriate request.
Good luck in all your endeavors!"

Sounds like time for a trip to Mexico to me.
Maybe the wife will agree to renting a place in La Manzanilla, Jalisco, Mexico. http://www.lamanzanilla.com/ If you do, contact Joanne Santana (Detroit girl). She's in real-estate down there and she tells me they're also in the tequila business :-) Ken in Miami

Looks nice - only problem is since we still have my daughter is still in middle school, the bender would consist of just me - wife has to stay home with kid. I was actually thinking about a beach front room just south of Tulum - eastern part of the Mayan Riveria. Just give me a shade tree, the beach, a hammock, a cigar and a bottle.....

Too bad.
You might like Xpu Ha. I was there years ago and it was pretty much unknown back then but it is a beautiful place. It's also a lot shorter trip than La Manzanilla.

<improve my physical health .. I'll definately have more time to enjoy cigars.> i quit the 'grind' at 54 and have never have looked back. slipped into retirement quite easily and now have much more time to enjoy all my hobbies ... kayaking, biking, canoeing with the dogs, hiking with the dogs, 'playing' with my wife. i smoke far too many cigars but never equated doing so with improving my health.

Xpu Ha was right next to a place I stayed at last year - now I'd like to go about an hour further south - very secluded beach front "condos" no running water or electricity - bare bones beachfront.....

I don't either - gotta slim down. Will also have time to smoke more cigars.
Two distinctly different things.

That's the way Xpu Ha was when I was there. I guess "progress" has caught up with them.
Have a good time whatever you decide.

Congratulations, Sandy. After retiring at 52, I can attest to the fact that retirement is better than working, except there may be no more raises. I'll smoke one for you tonight. Good luck.

[snip] Good luck, man. I've been in my little rut for just over 20 years...
it'll be 22 in September. The figures you quoted are pie in the sky for us, there just isn't that much money in music T shirts.
Don't know how long I'll be able to stick it out, I'm envious of you and the time you're going to have. Hey ho. Good things come to those who wait, and I've got a few more years until I get as middle aged as you.
That's a few more years of putting money away, hopefully it'll be enough to knock this work thing on the head one day... Sooner the better!
Justin.

Oh dear.
Did Hutch put you up to this?
:-) opportunities. But for now, done working off the Just don't take it too easy: your life and career sound like too many others who can't take the switch from work to retirement and keel over with a stress-induced coronary.
Why not join some of the Californian ASCers on a trip to TJ?
I hear they actually have Cuban cigars there ...
:-) coolerdor and pull out If it's luck you want, luck you shall have!

Thanks.
Nope - Hutch fishes fresh water - I prefer the high seas.....
Actually I'm quite laid back - not the Type A personality of the corporate world. Just got lucky...
Could be a lot of fun - but I would have to travel clear across the country to get there. Next week I'll be only 90 mile from Havana in Key West. So close, yet so far!!
Thanks to all of you for your good wishes!!
