I stopped by this newsgroup while searching for old friends in Venezuela (I lived in Caracas for a while years ago), and I encountered a series of disturbing posts all made by the same individual. His name or alias is T.Schmidt and this person obviously suffers from an advanced obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Mr. or Ms. Schmidt, contact me at dr.seinfeld....@hotmail.com if you need help controlling your OCD. Sincerely Rick Seinfeld

Hi, as a sufferer of OCD , I was wondering what films have the subject of OCD in it? The only one I can think of is As Good As it Gets. Obsessive - Compulsive Disorder: An Anxiety Disorder That Affects Children with OCD are less likely to realize their actions and thoughts are irrational even though they dedicate several hours a day to their compulsions. They're more likely to be bullied because their peers don't understand the compulsions – and children target others who are different. Kids with OCD may internalize what the other kids say, and believe that they are "crazy" or "a loser" or that they'll never be loved. Bullying also increases feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness.
Therapy could involve behavior modification or prescription medication, depending on the situation. Combined treatments are most effective, according to psychologist Nienke Tenney from Utrecht University. The problems and limitations that both adults and children with OCD experience are mostly due to the depression and personality – and not the OCD itself. Half of all people who struggle with OCD have a personality disorder as well, which limits their social skills and reduces their quality of life.
Obsessive - Compulsive Behaviors and Disorders: Symptoms, Treatment Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent, unwanted, disturbing thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive, ritualized behaviors that a person feels driven to perform (compulsions). Like a needle getting stuck on an old LP, OCD causes the brain to get stuck on a particular thought or action that it just can’t let go. People with OCD often say the symptoms feel like a case of mental hiccups that won’t go away.
The Obsessive Compulsive Foundation reports that 1 in 50 adults in the United States currently experiences OCD, and twice as many have experienced it at some point in their lives. Symptoms of OCD occur in people of all ages and may change in severity over time. Most people with OCD have both obsessions and compulsions, but a minority have obsessions alone (about 20 percent) or compulsions alone (about 10 percent). Compulsions generally accompany obsessions as a result of the brain’s attempt to dismiss or neutralize the obsessions.

Patient With Brain Injury In 'Minimally Conscious State' Shows Reporting in the Aug. 2 issue of Nature -- in a study entitled "Behavioral Improvements with Thalamic Stimulation After Severe Traumatic Brain Injury" -- the researchers say that if these results are replicated in other patients, it could change the standard of care for these chronically under-responsive individuals. Most patients in a minimally conscious state (MCS) are now cared for in long-term nursing facilities, without the benefit of rehabilitation or status-changing treatment.

Opinion: Psychosis as struggle for meaning, not abstract exercise Psychotherapeutic investigation and the narration of ones experiences have the natural tendency to awaken in the patient the conviction that he is not suffering from an incurable disease but from one which, in principle, he or she can be cured of On a WHO assignment to the NWFP and Azad Kashmir earth quake affected areas, I was forced to think about the nature of my assignment and the effectiveness of available skills. The advertisement called for trained psychologists and psychiatrists who would help earth quake affectees overcome post-traumatic stress disorder caused by the disastrous consequences of the earthquake on October 8, 2005. I was not exactly qualified for the position but being ...
Talking is helping new moms battle postpartum depression Then, when Rachel was born in 1996, the Dallas mom, who had always thought of herself as a happy person, couldn't sleep and began crying for no reason. Relief didn't begin until she learned about postpartum depression, or PPD, and realized that she was among the 15 percent of new mothers affected by it. "I didn't even know it existed," Mrs. Poulin said. "For most women, it's not something they talk about." But talking, she learned, was the first step to recovery. And she has since dedicated herself to helping other women open ...
Researchers: New understanding of autism is near Attorney David Gould and his wife, Lauretta Murdock, the founder of a school in New Hyde Park, were not prepared for the phone call they recently received. It was from a neighbor, someone they had never met. The caller was frightened. The Gould's 16-year-old son, Bryan, had casually entered the neighbor's house through an unlocked door, startling the home's occupants. "We were so lucky. God were we lucky," said Gould, of Port Washington. Bryan was oblivious to the panic. At a time when home invasions are in the public consciousness - and homeowners might be armed - Gould ...
The teen is autistic, as is his 12-year-old brother, Connor. Yet, the Gould/Murdock household is not atypical. Families nationwide are facing the realities of autism, and sometimes with more than one child. Murdock is one of Long Island's leading experts on the condition, having established Mosaic, a New Hyde Park school for autistic children. No longer rare Once considered rare, autism now affects one in every 150 children in the United States, according to statistics from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Advocacy groups call it an epidemic with an end nowhere in sight. While ...

The Dan Marino Foundation The Center is also home to and has helped to fund the University of Miami/Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM/NSU CARD), which was profiled in the last issue of The OARacle . The Dan Marino Resource Center, which provides books, videos, and audiotapes, as well as other materials to educate families about neurological disorders, including autism, Asperger Syndrome, epilepsy, Tourette's Syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, and attention deficit disorder, is also housed at the Center.

The bill was unanimously passed in both the Florida House of Representatives and the Senate on April 28, 2006. The Foundation received funding to develop and implement the instructor training program.

Who says autism's a disease? That is a very interesting article. Thank you. "In 2003, the Social Welfare Ministry opened a job-training center in Tel Aviv for people with AS, which is run by Beit Eckstein, (an organization that aspires to improve the quality of life of people with special needs). To date, about 50 AS adults have participated in half-year or year-long programs as part of the project. The program focuses on upgrading life skills in general, as well as social and communication skills, by means of workshops and protected trials on the job. One group is geared for academics, and at its end the center assists the graduates ...
Autism Great information, thanks for posting this. As a mom of an autistic boy how do you feel about the idea that the number of children being diagnosed with autism is rising not due to vaccines, but rather due to proper diagnosis of autism (whereas 20-30 years ago a child would have been misdiagnosed as being retarded)? That's the camp that I fall into, but I don't have much experience with autistic kids, let alone have one, so I'm curious to know how you feel about it.
I watched a video in my psychopathology class about a particular young woman...she was VERY intelligent but could not communicate at all verbally. She had a little PDA type thing where she typed in the word and had a helper read things out loud for her. She attended college, which is where she was at when the video was filmed. I know you're worried about Joey getting diagnosed with it as well, but I think a 5% chance is not bad at all. Especially considering he has a different father. I can't tell you not to worry much because that would probably be impossible.
