Parenting a difficult teen

(25 Messages)

Hi I have just found this group. I used to subscribe to misc.kids hundreds of years ago when the internet had hardly just begun and my kids were just babies. Now, firstborn is almost 15 and life is pure hell. She's in trouble at school (truanting, being temporarily excluded, failing, low self esteem), known to the police (shoplifting, absconding from home) trouble at home (foul behaviour, language, stealing, smoking, drinking, going out whenever and wherever, having her beautiful face pierced, n ...

Credibility and accuracy

(10 Messages)

Many claims are made in this ng about social issues. They are often stated with great authority and clever argument. This influences folks that are unwilling to explore further to believe things that may or may not be true. Much about child welfare, foster parents, and the processes and proceedures are presented with most flagrant declarations, sometimes not only without proof, but with proof of something very different in rebutal, is peddled here. A commonly held belief is that coerced particip ...

Parenting TeensParenting Teens Perhaps the only thing more difficult than being a teenager is parenting one. While hormones, the struggle for independence, peer pressure , and an emerging identity wreak havoc in the soul of the adolescent, issues of how much autonomy to grant, how much "attitude" to take, what kind of discipline is effective, which issues are worth fighting about, and how to talk to offspring-turned-alien challenge parental creativity, patience, and courage. If adolescence can be conceptualized as a journey from childhood to adulthood, parenting adolescents can also be thought of as a journey. To guide a child to adulthood, to ingrain ...

Troubled Teens Difficult Teens Problem Teens Rebellious TeensTroubled Teens, Difficult Teens, Problem Teens, Rebellious Teens Communication is always the first to go when people get busy. We have seen this over and over again. We have also experienced it and feel that our children shut us out. Although we are tired and exhausted, along with the stress of today's life, we need to stop and take a moment for our kids. Talk and LISTEN to them. Ask lots of questions, get to know their friends and their friends parents, take part in their interests, be supportive if they are having a hard time, even if you can't understand it, be there for them.

Attention Parents! Need help in making the right decision on how to best help your child? Click here to get an answer from a Parent Consultant. Go ahead, our service is no cost to you! We are here to help. This all sounds so easy and so simple, but take it from parents that have walked this path, it is not easy. When a parent works a full day, has stress from the job along with household chores, not to mention the bills, it is hard to find that moment. We are all guilty of neglect at one time or another after all, we are only ...

Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow last night identified the suspect as a 15-year-old boy, the second teenager to be charged in the high-profile case. The youth, whose name was not released, is expected to be arraigned in Family Court Monday on charges of murder, felony murder, attempted murder and other counts. For the first time, the prosecutor said investigators believe as many as six people ...

Does your teen ager know you careDoes your teen -ager know you care? From age 25 to age 30, I worked as a youth minister. It was my job to stay on top of youth culture. Sometimes I became an important link between teen-agers and their parents. At times I felt like an interpreter, helping parents understand teen-agers who didn’t seem to speak the same language or helping teen-agers understand their parents who didn’t seem to understand their teen-ager’s growing need for independence and space.

As I’ve aged, the world around me has changed. Some things about the current youth culture have left me behind: I don’t own a MP3 Player. I’ve never played Xbox. I’ve never bought a shirt or a pair of jeans with holes already in them. I’ve never eaten cold pizza for breakfast. I never read any Harry Potter books, nor have I seen any of the movies. I can’t tell you one song sung by Red Hot Chili Peppers or even what group or pop artist has the number one album. I haven’t been to the movies in more ...

Pre Teen Raider Interview With Writer Gail SimonePre- Teen Raider: Interview With Writer Gail Simone GL: Have there been any conversations with GameTap or Eidos about taking this outside the five-minute short and making it into a longer series or an expansion of the franchise? GS: Not with me. But I have said to GameTap that after seeing what Six Point Harness did with the animation that I think it would make an awesome cartoon with that age group. It has a lot of velocity, and fun, and adventure, and all those things that I think kids want in a cartoon. If they built the right cast of characters around her, I think that would be awesome.

Pre-Teen Raider, a five-minute animated Tomb Raider short that stars a middle-school version of Lara Croft, will hit GameTap's site sometime today as part of their Tomb Raider Re/Visioned series. I uploaded the trailer to YouTube last week and it's gotten more views and comments than almost anything I've ever put up there. I spoke to comic writer Gail Simone, who created and wrote the script for Pre-Teen Raider, about turning a sex symbol into family-friendly entertainment: Even though she is sexy and is a sex symbol, ...

If She Were Alive TodayIf She Were Alive Today. Group Writing Project time again! This month’s theme is “Thanks mom” . If She were alive today I would say: Mom you raised me in the church, you taught me about how much Jesus loved me and had a purpose for my life. You always cherished the way God made me, the personality he formed in me, not just by your words, but in your actions. You always reminded me to measure what I learned from church and school against the Word of God. That tool has kept me from many deceptive doctrines. You sacrificed your life for me on a daily basis yet were still able ...

My parents divorced when I was about one year old. From then on it wasn’t much fun going back and forth between houses. My parents did their best, but their bitterness really didn’t help the situation. I don’t have many “thank yous” for them, except to thank them for showing me how not to do things. They got much better as I got older. But still, the fact I moved out at 17 to start my own life illustrates my frustration. I’m sorry John. Divorce is heart wrenching.

Twisted by Laurie Halse AndersonTwisted by Laurie Halse Anderson High school senior Tyler Miller spent the summer doing community service after committing "The Foul Deed," and hard labor community service at that. The benefit is that it beefed up his muscles, so he returns to school in the fall transformed from a skinny dweeb "Nerd Boy" to a buff god. This seems to be his lucky year as the girl of his dreams, popular rich-girl Bethany Milbury, appears to take a liking to him. Things aren't as great as they seem, though. He still has a verbally abusive father--whose boss ...

Anderson lives up to the expectation she set with her acclaimed novel Speak. Once again, she addresses difficult teen issues like fitting in, lust, academic pressure, identity, and personal integrity, this time with a male protagonist. In first-person narrative, she gives Tyler an amazingly authentic teen voice. He's witty and sometimes sarcastic, but always worth listening to. As the story unfolds and he learns that sometimes what people think is more important than reality, and that life is not always as simple as "doing the right thing," ...
