African American Father Involvement and Preschool ChildrensAfrican American Father Involvement and Preschool Children??™s A developmental ecological model was used to identify child attributes, father characteristics, and familial factors associated with multidimensional father involvement with preschool children enrolled in Head Start. The relations between father involvement and children's school readiness were also investigated. Eighty-five African American fathers and father figures were surveyed about their involvement in child care, home-based educational and school-based educational activities. Children's school readiness competencies were evaluated via teacher report or direct assessment. ...

HSIPC Head Start Bulletin Father Involvement Building StrongHSIPC: Head Start Bulletin- Father Involvement ??” Building Strong Fathers and Discipline by W. Douglas Tynan When we hear the terms "discipline" and "father," there appears to be a natural connection, but often with negative overtones. The idea of a father as one who punishes or is an authoritarian figure runs deep in our culture. Yet, fathers have much more to offer than only helping their children learn self- control and social rules, and their role involves much more than punishment. Discipline is one of those familiar words that carry different meanings. To many people, discipline simply ...

To the manse bornTo the manse born To anyone brought up in the Church of Scotland such sentiments will sound eerily familiar. Moreover, to a son - or daughter - of the manse they will be doubly so. One such is Wendy Alexander who, if the runes are right, is on course to succeed Jack McConnell as leader of the Labour Party in Scotland. Thus there is the tantalising possibility - depending on the fortunes of the SNP - of a son of the manse in power at Westminster and a daughter of the manse installed as first minister at Holyrood. For the Kirk, which seems permanently to be in a state of crisis and corrosive navel-gazing, this would represent a remarkable coup. Not that it would ...

The first thing to remember about Presbyterianism, Alexander tells me, late one afternoon at Labour's Glasgow headquarters, is that it is founded on the tradition that we are all equal in the eyes of God. "As an individual, it's not about what you achieve but who you are that is important in life." Secondly, she adds, there is the centrality of the parish which the minister serves. "In that sense, the children of the manse grew up in an environment where building community is what's going on around your family life all the time."

If kids made the rulesIf kids made the rules For 40 days in April and May, CBS sent 40 children, ages 8 to 15, to a former ghost town in New Mexico to build a society from scratch. With no access to their parents, not even by telephone, the children set up their own government, laws and society in front of reality television cameras. The goal, according to creator Tom Forman (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Armed and Famous), was for "kids to succeed where adults have failed."

The children interviewed this week said they had to rough it without electricity or running water, sleep on bed rolls on the floor, cook their own meals, clean the town, run businesses, survive on three changes of clothes and set up their own hours and rules. Although three said they worked harder than they ever had, all four said the most challenging aspect was getting used to being filmed constantly.

Conservative By Default Black Warmongers and PseudoConservativesConservative By Default: Black Warmongers and Pseudo-Conservatives Home >> United States >> Elections & Politics Conservative By Default: Black Warmongers and Pseudo-Conservatives Elizabeth Wright - 8/22/2007 The passage of just a few short years has made it hard to remember when only the views blessed by the progressive left found a path into the public arena. And, although modern liberalism still prevails as society's dominating force, by the year 2007, much has changed when it comes to the ability to disseminate and broadcast other political messages. For close to four decades, the subject of race, especially, was locked down ...

The Brain has left the buildingThe Brain has left the building In the flesh, this master image-sculptor does not cut much of a prepossessing figure. To start with, there’s a lot of flesh – Rove may be Bush’s Brain; he is certainly not Bush’s Body. The belt that holds up the trousers of his cheap suit bites deeply into the lower slopes of a large, overarching belly. One former colleague fondly recalled how Friday was ice-cream day, when Rove bought ice-cream for the whole office. He and his devoted secretary would snack all day on the constant supply of sweets that she kept on her desk.

Rove is distinctly ungroomed. His remaining strands of white hair float above his pate in a wild halo – the oddest comb-over I’ve ever seen – leaving a sort of hatmark where his hair furls away from the scalp. He admits that he is no pin-up. He says of his time at high school in Salt Lake City: “I was the complete nerd. I had the briefcase. I wore Hush Puppies when they were not cool. I was definitely uncool.”
