Will @home complain about users using Linksys, SMC, etc. broadband routers to connect multiple PCs to a single cable modem?
Matthew J Zukowski zakez...@halcyon.com
As far as I'm aware, This is not a violation of the AUP, however no one in the abuse department will comment on this, however, this is likely to be a call on behalf of your MSO.
When I talked to sales in getting the service, they were most hip in saying that a nat based router would be acceptable. This was ATnT @home.

If you hooked up several computers and chewed up bandwidth they might. In their contract they have the right to charge additional fees for more than home usage. When I tried to get a figure from Cox@home here in Phoenix I got 5 different answers from 5 different sources. :-) ...

It isn't a violation of the TOS, however if you phone them for support, they may just ask you to connect one PC directly to the cable modem. This is the only configuration they provide support for.

It would be nice if you could get someone from @Home to actually put this in writing! Rob

First, you'd have to find someone there, who can write! ;-)

My AT&T @home provider here in Bellevue, WA just sent me a flyer today, offering to sell me a Linksys router. That gives a good hint :) Ron ...

I also received one of those flyers and also jumped to the same conclusion. If you go to their web site (www.attbroadband.com/homenetworking), however, they actually want to sell a switch or hub, not a broadband router. What this means, is that @home wants the user to pay for extra IP addresses for each PC.

That's a good question, I'm sure they want us, the user, to pay extra, however, they are also running out of ip address to hand out, so who knows what they want : I also received one of those flyers and also jumped to the same : conclusion. I don't know. Here in Illinois, it is legal for stores to sell Crossbows, but it is illegal for anyone to use a crossbow. You can buy it, but you can never load it and fire it. Wouldn't surprise me to find that they will sell you a router even though they won't allow you to use it without paying for more IPs.

In March-April, when I was shopping between DSL and cable, Comcast told me twice that I could hook up a router for home use, but if I had trouble with that set-up, I was on my own. I have 3 home machines hooked into an SMC router. SMC has given me the tech support I needed (altho after some long holds on phone), Over-all, I am 1 happy customer!
