A couple of months ago, in one of my local newspapers, they said that the high school dropout rate was 70%. I don't know if that is high or low, since I went to a dependent school in Japan, and most of my classmates did not spend the whole 4 years in that high school because their fathers tour of duty was only 18 months. So, the question I have is, do you remember if the drop out rate in your high school was around that number.

Homeschooling Teens - FamilyEducation.com The Whys, and the Must-Haves The idea of homeschooling through high school can be scary. Parents tell me, "I could never homeschool my teen - I barely got through some of my own high school classes!" But homeschool advocates are discovering there's a better way for teens to learn, and homeschooling your high-schooler may be easier than you think. Why Homeschool? It's not uncommon for homeschooled teens to complete four years of traditional high-school studies in 24 months or less. How can that be? Teens who learn at home are able to focus their energy and resources on the task at hand. With no distractions, it's ...

Transforming hurting youth into to contributing adults Each stage of school offers another level of opportunity to develop not only basic life skills, but also the emotional maturity that ultimately will be essential for successful independent living. Beyond learning how to balance both their diets and their checkbooks, young adults need to develop a healthy self image, an ability to trust others, and a sense of being connected.
Young adults who have been mistreated or abused and living in foster care for years, however, typically struggle as they prepare for independence. The preparation process itself often forces them to re-experience earlier separations, disappointments and losses in their lives. They often have low self-esteem and tend to blame themselves for the bad things that have happened in their lives. They have difficulty trusting others and thus struggle in forming healthy relationships with peers and adults. While other adolescents have strong ...
Megan: Struggling to stay in school Unlike many teen moms, Megan Lambert, 17, was already married when she got pregnant. She met her husband, Jonathan Lambert, 20, when she was 15 and attending Cummings High School. They dated for about nine months before deciding to get married and moving into a trailer. She had gone to the doctor to get birth control when she found out she was already pregnant. "No, I'm not," she said. "No, I'm not." Megan came home from the doctor's office and took six EPTs. All of them came out positive. "Nope, that one's broken," she said after each ...
Durham schools coaxing dropouts to try a new beginning It took a few months for Derisha Baldwin, 18, to think about why she dropped out of Riverside High School last year -- she was discouraged about being behind -- and whether she was really motivated to go back. "I was being big-headed about it," she said. "I hope to get back on track. I'm not afraid to make that first step." Wednesday morning, Baldwin visited her old Riverside counselors and asked about trying again to get her diploma. More than 30 other students made similar efforts at a Durham Public Schools session held at the county's public library. Bringing ...
