Awful recurring Urinary Tract infections

(22 Messages)

Hello, My wife and I make love regularly, and are attempting to conceive a child. However, all too frequently, my wife contracts a terrible urinary tract infection after making love. We are meticulous with our hygiene, and I try to be as gentle as possible during lovemaking, but the infections continue. They are so severe that instead of urine, my wife passes what appears to be just blood, and needless to say it is incredibly painful. We are at our wits end with this problem, my wife is drinking ...

New to group with some questions

Dear Fellow Takers of AD's. My name is Regina and I've had Depression for over 7 years now. I've taken Zanax, Zoloft, and Prozac. After disovering that these medications did absolutely *nothing* for me, my Dr., a GP, put me on Effexor XR six or seven months ago. He started me on 37.5 mgs 1x per day and a few months later had me taking it twice a day. Effexor XR has been *very* helpful, and I had not felt better in years.... ....but.... A few days ago, I missed my period. Knowing I never miss exc ...

Speech development in bilingual kids

(12 Messages)

At the preschool where I work, most of the kids are in Hebrew speaking homes, and are growing up bilingual (Hebrew/English.) It's been a while since I've had a toddler of my own, so it took me a while to realize that, overall, their language development is a bit slower than typical for their age. We have one English-speaking only 22 month old who is very verbal with a large vocabulary (already knows some of his colors/letters/shapes0. The bilingual (and in one instance, trilingual...) kids of si ...

English Language Development Academic Listening SkillsEnglish Language Development Academic Listening Skills Academic Listening Skills Academic listening demands more than merely noting main points. When you attend lectures, you need to apply the highest level of listening skills you have. Not only do you have to listen to your professors expounding abstract and sophisticated concepts, but you also have to be effective in taking notes that will help you with learning the topics covered in the lecture. Thus, daily listening comprehension that suffices for most interactions is not enough in a lecture. You need to be doing the following: • Evaluate information ...

Baby Einsteins Not So Smart After AllBaby Einsteins: Not So Smart After All The claim always seemed too good to be true: park your infant in front of a video and, in no time, he or she will be talking and getting smarter than the neighbor's kid. In the latest study on the effects of popular videos such as the "Baby Einstein" and "Brainy Baby" series, researchers find that these products may be doing more harm than good. And they may actually delay language development in toddlers.

Led by Frederick Zimmerman and Dr. Dimitri Christakis, both at the University of Washington, the research team found that with every hour per day spent watching baby DVDs and videos, infants learned six to eight fewer new vocabulary words than babies who never watched the videos. These products had the strongest detrimental effect on babies 8 to 16 months old, the age at which language skills are starting to form. "The more videos they watched, the fewer words they knew," says Christakis. "These babies scored about 10% lower on language ...

MacmillanMcGrawHill39s Treasure Chest Helps K6 English LearnersMacmillan/McGraw-Hill's Treasure Chest Helps K-6 English Learners NEW YORK, Aug. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- By 2030, almost half of the U.S. population will be speaking a language other than English. As the number of these English-language learners (ELLs) in schools increases, teachers are looking for effective instructional practices to reach all of these students. To help meet this critical need, Macmillan/McGraw-Hill offers Treasure Chest, a research-based language development and literacy curriculum targeting students in Grades K-6.

Treasure Chest can be used with any core reading program, however it directly correlates to Macmillan/McGraw-Hill's Treasures, a K-6 language arts program. Treasure Chest follows the same theme and skill being taught in Treasures each week. The advanced level of Treasure Chest has the same vocabulary as the beginners' level in Treasures to help students make an easy transition into the regular classroom.

081907 LEFTRIGHT Up to whose standards08/19/07 LEFT/RIGHT: Up to whose standards? A small number of schools has adopted this curriculum with impressive results. Yet whenever I have tried to introduce this curriculum to school system administrators, the resistance is fierce. Instead of reaching for something new, they are content to cling to the nothing they have. This general standard is followed by a list of skills to be mastered in various categories (e.g., phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension). However, nowhere can one find lists of the precise tasks that are to be mastered within each skill or a list of essential readings and cultural ...

Not so David Eberwein hearing babies vs deaf babies on signingNot so David Eberwein - hearing babies vs deaf babies on signing Not too long ago I posted a video of my 1 year old hearing daughter signing during her 1st birthday party which easily showed the communicative value on signing. What makes signing so helpful for hearing babies/toddlers up to 2 to 3 years old is that they can communicate readily with their hands since their vocal cords are not mature enough for them to start speaking. In my video everybody was talking and not signing to my daughter for her respond correctly with signs. Most signs by hearing babies are related to important signs that address their basic needs ...

How Can Parents Model Good Listening SkillsHow Can Parents Model Good Listening Skills? Listen Better, Learn More In one of the Family Circus cartoon strips, the little girl looks up at her father, who is reading the newspaper, and says: "Daddy, you have to listen to me with your eyes as well as your ears." That statement says almost all there is to say about listening, whether in our personal conversations or in learning in school. Do Listening Skills Affect Learning? Listening is not a school subject like reading and writing. Many of us seem to feel it comes naturally and that as long as we can listen to directions on how to find the restroom, nothing more needs ...
