Hello, I have been getting really out of shape the last few years though I am in my weight range and not fat, but I haven't been doing any regular exercises. I don't have much of a knowledge about fitness or muscle building. Wanting to get back into fitness and to do something positive in terms of my muscles but not having a lot of time, I was thinking of doing 10 minutes per day on an elyptical and alternate with 10 minutes a day on a weight system (I recently got access to a Weider Pro Power Stack - image here: http://tinyurl.com/z6a9). I figure 10 minutes is better than nothing and at least is a start. The elyptical part is easy
- I just get on and start moving. But I don't know what I should do on the weight system or where to begin. Can someone give me pointers and/or useful links so that I can get a good start in to things?
Thanks, Ben

Take up tiddlywinks.
When you're ready to do more than 10 minutes a day, come back.

That sounds really silly. When I was doing the 5bx program from the candaian marines way back when on a regular basis I was quite fit and that didn't take much longer than that all up but was quite intensive. I was getting athletic scores according to the charts on the back too. I don't think that fitness is an all or nothing proposition where you either dovote an hour or day or just don't do anything. A little bit done regularly is better than a lot done and given up. With your attitude I don't see why any one would start and if they start I don't see why they would continue.

Reason in all things. Anybody can put in more than 10 minutes a day; if you're starting by saying that's your limit, you're not likely to accomplish much.
15-20 minutes weights every day, I can believe. 30-40 minutes 3xweek, I can believe. 10 minutes a day alternating not enough weights with not enough cardio? Tiddlywinks is looking good.
Check out Pavel Tatsoulaine's "Power to the People" for ideas on abbreviated weight programs, if you like.

Hey, he could have just said, "butch up you fat ****". That would have been more in tune with typical MFW posts. Good luck with your ten minute Canadian Marine program.

Actually, I wouldn't go any further than the CAnadian program except for the fact that even that amount (which isn't much) is really boring. And so is the eliptical for that matter which is part of the reason I decided on 10 minutes per day. Partly due to boredom I figure I can keep rationalising that it is only 10 minutes. Also due to the amount of free time I have though too. If I need to continually make a 30-60 minute window free in my day I will never get around to doing anything. Also, I am not living to get fit or to have a wonderful body. I am doing it purely to maintain some level of health and as such don't need to do any more than is necessary for that. If someone's goal in life is centered around weights etc. I am fine with that but I personally don't live for that - I have more significant things to do, but I still need to maintain myself and that includes mundane things like fitness, diet etc.
So I do what I have to do.

10 minutes a day is definit4ealy better than none at all! Geez people!!
I'm sure the 10 minutes can easily turn into 20 minutes when you throw in a set of pushups and a 4 10 rep set of crunches).
Then, I'm sure as you go you'll do a few twists and lunges and before you know it you'll be totally enjoying your 20 minute workout and there you go. A few times a week and you're all set...no question, only results!
Good luck and keep going with your 10 mins.+!!

Why would the OP want to waste ten minutes like that?
Again, why would he want to waste his time?
"Wayne S. Hill" hil...@asme.org
Doubling the time he claims to have available.
Oh, so I guess you think he should do 10 minutes of triceps kickbacks.

Eh? Why are you putting words in my mouth?
I think that dedicating more than ten minutes to a workout routine is a fine idea. But if time is pressed I certainly wouldn't have the OP spend ten minutes on "a set of pushups and a 10 rep set of crunches" or "a few twists and lunges" would you? Wouldn't have him do kickbacks either, but I never said I would.

Hi again.
It's not that I have 10 minutes free in the day. I don't have much time for anything. I will despite everything attempt to make space in my day though it may not be at the same time each day. The longer the period I have to make time for the harder it gets to fit it in somewhere so that is why I am looking to work out for less time rather than more.
Thinking this through a little more now, if from the time I start to work out to the time I am able to get on with my other things is about 25-30 minutes that would probably work. I am factoring in here changing into appropriate clothing, doing the work out, showering and then getting back into my original attire to get on with my day. Having guidelines on potentially an even longer work and then being able to hone it down based on my time available each day might be one way to go too and allow me to keep it up on a regular basis.

What a whining sniveling bunch of crap!!
"Jerry" no-s...@hotmail.com
Therein lies your basic problem: You have not taken responsibility for your life. YOU must decide what is important, allocate time to it, and execute.
Saying you don't have time, suggests that you allow others to control your life. If jumping to the other masters is more important than your own health, then that is YOUR decision. If YOU decide that your health is important, then YOU must allocate the time to it and either take it away from somewhere else, or (what is almost always the case) get more efficient in those other tasks. Whining will not get the job done.
Personally, I found that making the time for an hour each morning (including shower and dressing) first thing in the morning allowed me to perform better at work: More alert, clear head. When doing the various aerobic machines, I could plan out the day and think out any ongoing problems. I found that the hour spend was not really a net loss to my work day.
Ben a...@efg.com
I appreciate what you are saying. I didn't realise I came across whining. I am happy with how my life is organised and its focus. I recognise that I need to maintain a healthy body so will devote an amount of time that gives me a balance in doing the things I find to be significant compared to those things that need to be done in order to continue living and fitness is included in that. I could get up an hour earlier, but it isn't practical. I currently try to get up at 4am. I usually sleep in to 4:30 or 4:45am. I always try to knock off by 11pm.
I'll admit there are always things to work on to improve time management, but regardless I would still want to manage my time effectively with regards to fitness as well and that would mean not doing more than I need to to maintain my health. That is what I am trying to satisfy. Perhaps I should have come across asking here what is a reasonable amount of time to allocate to accomplish that rather than state a time out-right.

ISTR that the 5BX/ 10BX pamphlets have been out of print for some time. They were used by the RCAF, until the advance of research made it clear that they are of very limited benefit.
BTW, there are no "Canadian Marines." There are special forces, but if you don't know about them.... then that's how they like it.
